If you’re pouring concrete for a new pole building this year and already dreaming about the shop toys that come after, a commercial vehicle lift needs to be planned for before the slab ever gets poured, not after. We hear from central Iowa hobbyists constantly who framed up a beautiful 30×40 or 40×60 shop, got the walls insulated, ran electrical to the wrong spots, and then called us asking why their dream two post won’t fit the way they pictured. Ceiling Height Comes Before Anything Else
The single most common mistake we see in a fresh garage build is a truss height picked for looks instead of function. A commercial vehicle lift needs real clearance above the vehicle at full rise, not just enough room to squeeze the car in. If you’re running a 12-foot sidewall like a lot of the pole buildings we see going up around central Iowa this year, you’re workable for most two-post lifts, but you’ll want to double check the specific model’s overall height before you commit to trusses. Some higher-capacity units need every inch of that 12 feet, and a 10-foot wall will rule out several options entirely.
We always ask customers to send us their planned wall height and roof pitch before they order steel. It takes five minutes and saves a call later where someone’s asking if there’s a shorter column option for a building that’s already up. If your shop is still on paper, build in a little more height than you think you need. Overhead doors, garage door tracks, and lighting fixtures eat into usable clearance fast, and nobody has ever complained about having too much room to lift a full-size pickup.
Concrete Specs Matter More Than the Slab Looks
A pretty finished floor doesn’t tell you anything about what’s underneath it. Anchoring a commercial vehicle lift correctly requires a minimum slab thickness and cure time, and both get skipped constantly by contractors who are focused on getting the floor poured and moving to the next job. We recommend a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete for most two-post installs, more for heavier four-post or in-ground setups, and a full 28-day cure before anchors go in.
If you’re still in the planning phase, tell your concrete contractor exactly where the lift will sit and ask for that section to be poured to spec, not an afterthought. Rebar placement matters too — anchors sunk too close to rebar can be a real problem during installation. We’ve had to turn away installs on slabs that looked great to the eye but didn’t have the strength to hold a loaded lift safely. Get this step right during the build-out and you’ll never think about it again.
Sizing for What You’ll Actually Store, Not Just What You Own Today
Seasonal storage is one of the most popular reasons hobbyists in central Iowa reach out to us, and it’s also where sizing mistakes happen most. If your plan is to store a project car on the lift through winter while parking a daily driver underneath, you need to size for both vehicles at once, plus clearance. A 7,000 lb capacity lift covers most passenger cars comfortably, but if there’s any chance a truck or larger SUV enters the picture down the road, it’s worth stepping up in capacity now rather than replacing equipment in three years.
Think about width too. Storage use means the lift sits loaded for weeks or months at a time, so the arms and clear floor width need to accommodate the vehicle without you fighting to squeeze a second vehicle underneath every single time. We talk through actual vehicle dimensions with customers before recommending a model, not just a weight number, because a lift that technically holds the weight but doesn’t have the right reach or width makes seasonal storage a daily headache instead of a convenience.
Electrical and Air Lines Should Go In Before Drywall
This is the step that costs the most money to fix after the fact. A two-post or four-post lift needs a dedicated circuit, and depending on the model, you may want compressed air run to that same area for pneumatic tools once the vehicle is up. If your electrician is already on site running general shop power, get them the lift’s electrical spec sheet before they leave. It’s a small addition during rough-in and a genuinely expensive one after walls are closed up.
We’ve walked into more than one shop where the owner had to run surface-mounted conduit across a finished wall because nobody planned for lift power during the build. It works, but it looks like exactly what it is — an afterthought. If you’re not sure yet which lift you’re buying, at minimum have your electrician stub out a spare circuit near where you expect the lift to go. It’s cheap insurance against tearing into a finished garage later.
Budget Timing and Lead Times Don’t Always Line Up
We regularly work with buyers whose financing or budget won’t be finalized until later in the year, sometimes not until December, with installation planned for after that. That’s a completely normal way to plan a build-out, but it means lead times need to be part of your math from day one. Commercial-grade equipment isn’t always sitting on a shelf ready to ship, and depending on the manufacturer and model, order-to-delivery can run anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months.
If you know your budget will clear in December, start the conversation with us in the fall. We can lock in specs, confirm your garage measurements against the model you want, and have everything queued so the lift shows up close to when your shop is actually ready for it. Waiting until the check clears to start shopping is the single biggest cause of installation delays we see, and it’s completely avoidable with a little advance planning.
Delivery Access Is Easy to Overlook Until Move-In Day
A commercial vehicle lift is heavy equipment, and getting it off the truck and into your shop takes real planning if you don’t have a forklift or loading dock. We ask every build-out customer about their delivery access: door widths, whether there’s a level path from the driveway to the install location, and whether they have equipment on site to unload pallets safely.
If you don’t have a forklift, that’s fine, but it changes the delivery conversation, and it’s better to sort out beforehand rather than have a truck driver stuck curbside with no way to unload. Some of our customers arrange to borrow equipment from a neighbor or rent a pallet jack for the day; others coordinate with us on delivery options that fit their site. Either way, figure this out while you’re still finalizing your building’s door sizes and driveway grade, not the week the lift ships.
Choosing a Two-Post vs Four-Post for Your Use Case
Storage-focused hobbyists in Iowa often default to a two-post because it’s the classic shop image, but a four-post deserves real consideration if your primary goal is parking two vehicles stacked in a footprint rather than working underneath one constantly. A four-post commercial vehicle lift gives you a stable, drive-on platform that’s forgiving for long-term storage and doesn’t require the same precision in lift point placement every time you load a vehicle.
Two-post units are better if your main goal is actual maintenance access — oil changes, brake work, undercarriage inspection — since they leave the underside completely open. Some of our build-out customers end up wanting both eventually: a two-post for active work and a four-post for storage. If your shop footprint allows it, planning wall and floor layout with both in mind from the start beats trying to retrofit a second lift into a shop that wasn’t built for it.
