A mobile mechanic working out of a shared central Iowa bay recently asked us to help spec dealer lifts for exhaust and driveline work, and the process ended up being a good case study for anyone stuck comparing model numbers and capacity charts online. The Problem: Working Exhaust and Driveline Jobs Without a Fixed Lift

Before this install, our customer was doing exhaust and driveline repairs almost entirely with floor jacks, jack stands, and creepers, either at customer locations or borrowing space in a friend’s bay. That works for occasional jobs, but once he started picking up more central Iowa customers who wanted exhaust swaps, catalytic converter replacements, and driveshaft repairs done quickly, the lack of overhead access became the bottleneck in his business. Every job took twice as long as it should have, and he couldn’t safely handle anything heavier than a light truck without real support.

He came to us asking about dealer lifts specifically because he wanted something built to commercial standards, not a bargain import he’d seen online with vague specs and no local support. That request alone told us he understood the stakes — a driveline job means working directly underneath a vehicle for extended periods, and that is exactly the kind of work where a certified, properly rated lift isn’t optional. We started the conversation with what his actual vehicle mix looked like, since that determines every other decision that follows.

Comparing Model Numbers: What the Spec Sheets Actually Mean

Once we knew he was servicing a mix of half-ton pickups, SUVs, and the occasional one-ton dually, we compared a handful of two-post model numbers side by side. A 9,000 lb capacity lift covers most car and light truck exhaust work comfortably, but anyone regularly seeing three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks needs to be looking at 10,000-12,000 lb rated models instead, since driveline components add unexpected point-loading during removal.

We also compared runway width and arm reach across a few Rotary models, because exhaust and driveline access depends heavily on how far the arms swing and how much clear space you have between the columns. A narrower asymmetric lift can actually work against you on driveline jobs if the arms don’t clear the frame rails on longer trucks. Reading a spec sheet in isolation rarely tells the whole story — you have to compare rated capacity, arm reach, and column spacing together against your actual vehicle mix, which is exactly what a real spec comparison for dealer lifts should look like before you ever place an order.

Why We Recommended a Two-Post Over Other Configurations

We considered a few configurations before landing on a two-post asymmetric lift for this specific use case. A four-post would have given him drive-on convenience, but it restricts underbody access in exactly the areas he needed most — the arms and open center of a two-post give unobstructed reach to the exhaust system and driveline components from bumper to bumper.

A scissor lift was also on the table since his space was somewhat limited, but scissor lifts typically don’t provide the same full-length clearance underneath for driveshaft removal, especially on longer wheelbase trucks. In the end, the two-post won because it matched his actual daily work — quick, full-access jobs on a rotating mix of vehicles — better than either alternative. This is the kind of decision that should always come from matching lift geometry to your real work, not from picking whichever configuration looks most impressive in a showroom photo.

Sizing the Lift for Exhaust and Driveline Work Specifically

Exhaust and driveline jobs put different demands on a lift than general repair work. You’re often working with the vehicle at full height for extended stretches, which means arm restraint and locking mechanisms get more cycles than on a typical oil change lift. We made sure the model we specced had a reinforced locking system and arm restraints rated for that kind of repeated full-height dwell time.

We also talked through drip trays and floor drainage, since driveline fluid and exhaust carbon residue make more of a mess than most other repair categories. A lift with removable arm pads and enough ground clearance to slide a drain pan underneath saved him cleanup time on almost every job afterward. These are the kind of practical details that don’t show up on a basic spec sheet comparison but matter enormously once the dealer lifts he chose were actually running daily jobs.

Installation in a Shared Central Iowa Bay

Because our customer worked out of a shared bay rather than his own dedicated shop, installation planning had to account for other tenants’ equipment and traffic patterns. We measured ceiling height carefully, since a two-post lift with a vehicle raised to full working height needs real clearance above, and shared bays sometimes have lower obstructions like ductwork or lighting that a dedicated shop wouldn’t have.

We also coordinated the install timing around the other mechanics using the space, since anchoring a lift into a shared concrete floor means a day where that bay is unusable for anyone. ALI-certified installation mattered even more in this shared setting, because multiple mechanics using the same equipment means multiple people relying on that lift being installed correctly. That’s a responsibility we take seriously on every dealer lifts install, but especially in a multi-tenant shop where liability gets more complicated.

The Result: Faster Turnaround and Room to Grow

After the install, our customer told us his average exhaust job time dropped by roughly half, simply because he wasn’t crawling around on a creeper anymore and could work standing up with both hands free. Driveline jobs that used to take the better part of an afternoon with jack stands were finished in under an hour on the new lift, which let him take on more central Iowa customers without extending his hours.

He’s since asked us about adding a second lift as his mobile business transitions toward a fixed-location shop, which is exactly the kind of growth path we like to see. Choosing the right dealer lifts setup from the start meant he wasn’t stuck retrofitting or replacing equipment within the first year — the two-post he bought still has plenty of capacity headroom for whatever vehicle mix comes through next. That’s the whole point of doing a real spec comparison up front instead of guessing.
