If you’re a weekend mechanic in the Iowa-Illinois corridor tackling shocks and suspension work on your own trucks, you’ve probably started shopping dealer lifts the same way most guys do — by price first, and everything else second. That’s backwards, and it’s the reason we get calls every month from hobbyists whose new lift won’t fit through the garage door, doesn’t have clearance for a shock strut to droop fully, or needs 220V service that was never run to the shop. Why Dealer-Grade Lifts Show Up on Hobbyist Wish Lists

A lot of weekend mechanics ask for dealer lifts specifically because that’s the caliber of equipment they see in a real service bay — commercial-duty arms, symmetric or asymmetric lifting geometry, and a lift table height that puts a strut tower at eye level instead of at your knees. There’s nothing wrong with wanting that. Dealer lifts are built to run five days a week under warranty-covered technicians, which means the components — cylinders, cables, locking mechanisms — are overbuilt relative to occasional home use. That extra margin is exactly what you want when you’re cracking loose a seized shock bolt or fighting a rusted spring perch.

The catch is that dealer-spec equipment is designed around dealer-spec buildings: 14-foot ceilings, three-phase power, and bay widths that assume a service drive, not a two-car garage. When we spec a lift for a home shop doing suspension and shock work, we’re translating that dealer-grade durability into a footprint that will actually clear your rafters and your breaker panel. That’s the sequencing conversation — durability first, then fit — and it’s why the checklist below starts with your building, not the lift brochure.

Step One: Measure the Garage Before You Measure the Lift

Before you call any distributor about dealer lifts, get four numbers off your own garage: ceiling height at the lift location, door width, floor slab thickness, and the distance from the lift’s install point to your nearest 220V circuit. Suspension and shock work means arms fully extended and a vehicle raised near full height for extended periods — you need six inches of headroom above the vehicle at full lift, not just enough to walk under it. A lot of Iowa-Illinois corridor garages built in the 60s and 70s have 7’6″ clear height, which rules out a lot of two-post configurations entirely and pushes you toward a mid-rise or a shorter-column model.

Slab thickness matters just as much. Most two-post lifts rated for pickup and SUV suspension work want a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and some manufacturers specify anchor embedment depths that a thin or cracked slab simply can’t support. We’ve had customers ready to buy, then discover their 1988 slab is 3 inches over fill dirt. Get a core sample or at least a firm answer on pour date and thickness before you spend money on a lift that needs bolts an old slab can’t hold.

Sequencing the Build-Out: Power, Then Pad, Then Lift

The order matters more than most hobbyists expect. Electrical should come first because it’s the most disruptive to retrofit — running a dedicated 220V 30-amp circuit after a lift is already bolted down means an electrician working around a two-ton obstacle. Get the circuit run and inspected before the lift arrives. Second is pad prep: if you’re pouring new concrete or patching a soft spot specifically for the lift, that concrete needs 28 days to cure before you load it, so schedule delivery around your pour date, not the other way around.

Only after power and pad are settled should you finalize which of the dealer lifts you’re actually buying. We see people reverse this — buy the lift, then discover the runway to their breaker box is 40 feet, or that the mounting bolt pattern doesn’t clear a floor drain. Sequencing it correctly also means you’re not paying storage fees on a lift sitting in a crate in the corner of your garage for six weeks while an electrician gets scheduled.

Choosing Lift Type for Suspension and Shock Access

Two-post lifts are the workhorse for suspension work because they leave the wheels hanging free — critical when you need the suspension to droop fully to get a shock strut off, or when you’re checking ball joint play under no-load conditions. A four-post lift with the vehicle sitting on its wheels is fine for brake jobs and oil changes, but it fights you on shock and strut work because the suspension never fully unloads. If suspension and shock jobs are your main use case, that alone should steer you toward a two-post over a four-post, even though four-posts feel more familiar to hobbyists who’ve only used drive-on ramps before.

Within two-post configurations, asymmetric arm lifts make it easier to open truck doors fully once the vehicle’s raised, which matters if you’re going in and out of the cab to test electric shocks or air suspension controls. Overhead versus baseline (floor-plate) two-post models is really a ceiling height question circling back to your first measurement — baseline models need less headroom because there’s no crossbar overhead, but they cost more and have a low bar across the floor you’ll trip over if you’re not used to it.

Capacity Math: Don’t Undersize for Trucks and Modified Suspension

A stock half-ton pickup or SUV weighs less than most hobbyists guess, but suspension work often means the vehicle isn’t stock anymore — lift kits, aftermarket bumpers, winches, and skid plates add weight fast, and all of that weight is concentrated exactly where a two-post lift’s arms need to grab. We generally tell weekend mechanics working on trucks and SUVs to buy more capacity than their current vehicle needs, because most people doing this kind of build-out keep the lift for 15-20 years and buy different vehicles in that span.

A 9,000 lb two-post lift covers the vast majority of half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs with margin for aftermarket weight. If you’re running anything heavier — a 3/4-ton diesel with a service body, for instance — step up to a 10,000 or 12,000 lb rated lift. Undersizing a lift to save money up front is the single most common regret we hear about after the fact, especially once someone loads on a winch bumper and steel skid plates that weren’t part of the original weight calculation.

Arm Configuration and Adapters for Suspension Access

Suspension and shock work means getting adapters and arm pads positioned on the frame rail or a factory-designated lift point without interfering with control arms, sway bar links, or brake lines. Standard rubber pad adapters work for most stock vehicles, but if you’re regularly working on trucks with aftermarket lift kits or lowered cars, you’ll want a set of screw-type or tall adapters in your kit from day one rather than fabricating spacers out of wood blocks, which we still see people doing and which we don’t recommend for safety reasons.

Frame-contact lifts (most two-post configurations) also need enough arm sweep to reach a frame rail on a long-wheelbase truck without the arm being maxed out at full extension, which reduces the mechanical advantage and can trip lift safety interlocks. When you’re comparing dealer lifts for a longer truck or van, check the specified maximum wheelbase or arm reach in the spec sheet, not just the weight rating — it’s an easy number to overlook and a common reason a lift that seemed fine on paper doesn’t actually work for a specific vehicle.

Buying New vs. Used Dealer-Surplus Equipment

A common shortcut hobbyists take is buying used dealer lifts off a dealership that’s upgrading or closing a service department. That can be a legitimate deal, but it comes with real risk: cables and hydraulic seals degrade with age and use cycles, and a lift that ran flawlessly in a dealership bay for a decade may need a full cable and seal service before it’s safe in your garage. We inspect used equipment for customers across Iowa regularly, and probably a third of the time we find something — a worn locking pawl, a cracked base plate, corrosion on anchor bolts — that needs addressing before first use.

If you go the used route, budget for inspection and likely part replacement as part of your total cost, not as an unexpected add-on. New equipment from an authorized dealer comes with a warranty and known service history, which for a lift you’re trusting with your own safety under a raised vehicle is worth the price difference in most cases. Either way, get an inspection before first use — it’s a small cost against a very real risk.
