Measure Ceiling Height Before You Measure Anything Else
A drive on auto lift raises the entire vehicle on a platform, which means you’re stacking the vehicle height on top of the lift’s own deck height and full rise. On a typical 4-post platform lift, the deck sits somewhere around 10 to 12 inches off the floor even at rest, and full rise can put the top of a pickup cab close to 12 feet in the air. If your pole building has 12-foot sidewalls, that sounds like plenty until you account for purlins, lighting, HVAC ductwork, or a header beam running lower than the walls themselves. We ask every caller for actual sidewall height and any known obstructions before we recommend a model, because the quoted lift height on a spec sheet is worthless if your building won’t allow full travel.
Farm shops are notorious for this because the building was often designed around combines and grain trucks, not around a lift that needs vertical clearance in one specific bay. Door Swing and Approach Ramp Clearance

Measure the door opening at its lowest point, not the wall height next to it, and measure with the door fully open since some overhead doors hang tracks or springs that reduce usable height.
You also need enough straight approach distance in front of the door to drive on square. A drive on auto lift is not forgiving of an angled approach the way a two-post arm lift is — you need to line up the tires with the runways every single time, so a tight turning radius into the bay makes daily use frustrating. We lay this out with customers over the phone or in person before they buy, because a shop layout that works great for parking a tractor doesn’t always work for backing a truck up to line up on 6-inch-wide runways.
Weight Rating for Rural and Farm Vehicle Mix
Most farm shops around Ames aren’t just lifting passenger cars — they’re mixing in half-ton and one-ton pickups, sometimes with a stock trailer or flatbed attached that gets unhooked at the door. Runway Width and Tire Rotation Access
If tire rotation and wheel work is your primary use, runway width and the availability of a rolling jack bridge matter as much as capacity. A drive on auto lift with a sliding jack tray between the runways lets you pick a wheel off the ground without needing a separate floor jack, which speeds up tire and brake work considerably. Standard runway spacing works for most passenger trucks and cars, but if you run wider work trucks or duallies, confirm the outside track width fits before ordering.

Being able to lock the platform at a mid-height for wheel-off work, rather than sending it all the way to full rise every time, saves cycle time on a shop doing several vehicles a day.
Concrete Floor Requirements and Anchoring
Every drive on auto lift needs a slab thickness and cure time that matches the manufacturer’s anchor specs, and this is where we see the most pre-installation surprises in pole buildings. A 4 to 6 inch slab poured within the last year may not have cured long enough or may not be reinforced adequately for anchor bolt pull-out ratings, especially with a fully loaded platform cycling up and down daily. We ask for the slab age, thickness, and whether it’s rebar or mesh reinforced before we finalize a quote, because retrofitting a thin or under-cured slab after the lift shows up is expensive and avoidable.

Power Requirements: 110V vs 220V
This comes up on almost every call — do you need 220 volt service for a drive on auto lift? Most residential and farm-shop-sized platform lifts run on a standard 220V single-phase circuit, though some smaller storage-focused models are available in 110V configurations with reduced pump speed. If your shop is wired for 220V already for welders or compressors, you’re in good shape. If not, factor an electrician into your budget alongside the lift itself, because running a dedicated 220V circuit to a lift bay isn’t something you want to discover you need after delivery.
