A drive on auto lift wasn’t the first option a Cedar Rapids collector had in mind when he called us about storing two classic vehicles in his new pole building shop, but by the time we finished walking through his space it was the clear answer. He wanted to store one car on the lift and park another underneath, with enough clearance underneath to do his own maintenance including engine oil pan gasket work. This is the story of that first year, from the initial site visit through his first real service job on the lift, and why we steered him away from a symmetric arm configuration toward a different setup that fit his actual use case.

The Initial Ask: Storage First, Maintenance Second

When he first reached out, his priority was straightforward: he needed a way to store a car on top and one underneath in a 30×40 pole building with a 12-foot sidewall, on a concrete floor rated for the job. He mentioned wanting something under 7,000 pounds capacity since he was working with passenger vehicles, not trucks. That put him squarely in drive on auto lift territory rather than a two-post, since the whole point was stacking two vehicles vertically in a limited footprint, not accessing one vehicle from underneath while it’s parked mid-bay.

What came up later in the conversation, almost as an afterthought, was that he also wanted to do his own maintenance on the stored vehicles, including oil changes and eventually an oil pan gasket replacement on one of his older cars. That detail changed our recommendation significantly, because a drive on auto lift built purely for storage doesn’t always give a tech enough clearance or arm access to do real service work underneath. We had to figure out a configuration that handled both jobs well.

Why We Steered Him Away From a Pure Storage Configuration

A lot of drive-on platforms marketed for home and collector storage are built with tight deck clearance and minimal ground clearance underneath, because the assumption is the vehicle is parked, not serviced. For a collector who just wants to store cars and never touch them, that’s fine. But this customer specifically wanted to pull an oil pan gasket eventually, which meant we needed enough clearance under the lowered vehicle to get a drain pan, tools, and his own body underneath comfortably.

We walked him through the tradeoff: a taller platform gives more underneath clearance for service work but eats into his 12-foot sidewall height when the top vehicle is raised. We measured his actual vehicles, confirmed stack height with margin for his tallest classic car, and landed on a configuration that gave him working clearance underneath without maxing out his ceiling height. This is exactly the kind of layout question we like to solve on-site rather than over email, and we offered to swing out and lay the lift out in his building before he committed to anything.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arms: The Real Decision

Once we settled on the platform style, the next question was arm configuration for the service points underneath. Symmetric arms position the front and rear pickup points evenly, which works fine for general lifting but can put the driver right in an awkward stance when working on something positioned toward one end of the vehicle, like an oil pan under the front-center of the engine. Asymmetric arms shift the front pickup points forward and angle them out, opening up a clearer path to the front of the vehicle where most oil pan gasket work happens.

For this collector, we recommended asymmetric arms specifically because his stated maintenance work — oil pan gaskets, oil changes, occasional front-end inspection — all happens in that same forward zone under the engine. Symmetric arms would have worked adequately, but asymmetric gave him a noticeably easier reach to the pan bolts without repositioning a creeper or contorting around an arm. It’s a small spec difference on paper that made a real difference the first time he actually worked underneath his own car.

Installation Day: What Actually Happened

Installation went smoothly once we confirmed his concrete floor could handle the anchoring requirements for a 7,000 lb rated platform stacked with two vehicles. Pole building shops vary a lot in floor spec, and we always check this before showing up with equipment, because a slab poured for light storage isn’t always poured for a loaded drive on auto lift plus a second vehicle’s worth of static weight overhead. His floor checked out fine, and the anchoring went in without complications.

We also walked him through power requirements before install day since he’d asked whether he needed 220v service in his shop. Most platform lifts at this capacity run comfortably on standard shop power, but we always confirm voltage requirements against the specific unit before ordering so there are no surprises on install day. His pole building had the right service already run, which kept the install to a single day from arrival to final walkthrough.

The First Real Service Job: Oil Pan Gasket at the Six-Month Mark

About six months in, he called to report the first real test: an oil pan gasket job on his older classic, the exact scenario we’d designed the arm configuration around. He raised the vehicle to a working height using the platform’s incremental locks, set every couple of inches, which let him find a height that worked for his own reach rather than being stuck at a single fixed setting. That adjustability turned out to matter more than he expected going in, since oil pan work benefits from a slightly different height than general inspection.

The asymmetric arm clearance did exactly what we’d hoped: he had a clear, comfortable path to the pan bolts without needing to remove or reposition anything underneath. He told us afterward that the job took noticeably less time than the same repair on a friend’s vehicle using a basic two-post setup with symmetric arms, mostly because he wasn’t working around arm placement the whole time. That’s the payoff of matching arm geometry to actual planned maintenance work instead of just buying whatever configuration is cheapest or most common.

One Year Later: What We’d Tell Other Collectors

A year into ownership, his verdict is simple: the drive on auto lift did exactly what he needed for storage, and the asymmetric arm choice made the maintenance side genuinely usable rather than just theoretically possible. He’s since mentioned wanting to add a second unit for another vehicle, which tells us the first purchase solved the actual problem rather than just checking a box.
