A drive on auto lift is one of the most forgiving pieces of equipment you can put in a garage, but only if you plan the rest of the build around it instead of the other way around. We recently worked with an overlanding and off-road builder up in the Iowa Great Lakes region who was framing out a new pole building shop and wanted daily maintenance capability for his own rigs plus room to store a second vehicle underneath. That project became a good example of what order things need to happen in, because a lift dropped into a shop as an afterthought almost never works as well as one that was part of the plan from the concrete pour forward.

Why Sequencing Matters Before the Slab Goes In

The single biggest mistake we see in garage builds is treating the lift as a purchase decision that happens after the building is finished. A drive on auto lift needs a specific concrete thickness and cure time, anchor bolt clearance, and often a header height that has to be known before trusses go up. On this Iowa Great Lakes project, we got involved while the pole building was still framed but before the slab was poured, which let us confirm the exact overhead clearance a two-level, drive on style unit would need with a vehicle stored on top.

That early conversation also settled the concrete question. Most drive on lifts rated in the 7,000 to 14,000 pound range want a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured, reinforced concrete, and thinner or non-reinforced pads are asking for anchor pull-out down the road. We’d rather tell a customer to wait two extra weeks for concrete to cure than watch them fight a lift that was set on a slab that was never meant to carry that kind of point load. Getting this order right the first time saves a second concrete job later.

Matching Weight Capacity to Actual Daily Use

Overlanding and off-road builds carry a lot of extra weight that a stock passenger vehicle spec sheet doesn’t account for — winches, bumpers, roof racks, sliders, auxiliary fuel, and skid plates all add up fast. When we’re sizing a drive on auto lift for someone doing daily maintenance on a built rig, we ask for the actual curb weight with accessories installed, not the factory number, and we build in margin above that. A truck that started life at 6,000 pounds can easily clear 7,500 to 8,000 once it’s built out for overlanding.

For this project we landed on a capacity that comfortably covered his heaviest rig with room to spare, because undersizing a lift is not something you want to discover mid-lift. Daily maintenance use also means the lift gets cycled far more than a once-a-month hobby unit, so we talked through duty cycle and recommended a model built for regular use rather than occasional weekend wrenching. That distinction matters more than most buyers expect going in.

Storage on Top, Work Underneath — Making Both Work

One of the appealing things about a drive on auto lift is that it lets you store a vehicle up top while working underneath a second one, which is exactly what this build called for. But that dual-use plan changes the math on ceiling height, approach ramp angle, and even where you locate the unit relative to the bay door. We measured for the tallest vehicle likely to be stored on top, including roof rack and any antenna or light bar height, then confirmed there was enough vertical room left below for someone to stand and work comfortably on the vehicle underneath.

We also talked about the runway width and rollerjack compatibility, since off-road builds often need to pull wheels off for tire work, brake service, or suspension upgrades, and a fixed drive on platform without wheel-free capability limits what you can do. Adding rollerjacks or opting for a lift with a portable jack option kept this setup flexible enough for real maintenance work, not just parking two vehicles in less floor space. That flexibility is what turns a storage lift into a genuine daily maintenance tool.

Electrical and Power Planning Nobody Thinks About Early Enough

We get asked constantly whether a shop needs 220V for a drive on auto lift, and the honest answer is it depends on the model and hydraulic pump, but it is absolutely a question to answer before the electrician leaves the site. Running a sub-panel or dedicated circuit after drywall and insulation are in costs multiples of what it costs during rough-in. For the Iowa Great Lakes build, we confirmed voltage requirements with the electrical contractor while the panel schedule was still being drafted, which avoided a second trip out to the site later.

Beyond voltage, we also flagged where the power drop needed to land relative to where the lift’s power unit would sit, since a drive on lift’s hydraulic pump is usually mounted near the base and needs a nearby outlet, not one clear across the shop. Small details like this get missed when the electrical plan is drawn up without anyone who has actually installed lift equipment in the room. It’s a five-minute conversation that prevents a frustrating rewire.

Ceiling Height, Door Height, and the Numbers People Forget

Pole buildings often get built with 12-foot sidewalls, which sounds generous until you stack a lift, a vehicle, and a second stored vehicle on top of it. On this project the 12-foot walls were enough, but only after we ran the actual math: lift platform height, plus loaded vehicle height, plus a safety margin for headroom, compared against the lowest point of the roof structure or any HVAC and lighting hung from it. We’ve seen shops built with tall enough walls that still don’t work because ductwork was hung too low over where the lift needed to sit.

Door height matters just as much if the plan includes driving vehicles in and out regularly for daily maintenance rotations. A drive on auto lift doesn’t help much if the overhead door is too short to bring in the taller of the two vehicles being serviced. We walked the site with actual tape measurements rather than trusting the building plans alone, because as-built dimensions and blueprint dimensions don’t always agree, especially on pole buildings finished by different crews over time.

What We’d Tell Anyone Planning a Similar Build

If you’re framing a shop in the Iowa Great Lakes region or anywhere else in the state and you know a lift is coming eventually, call us before the concrete truck shows up. Long-Term Ownership: Maintenance and Getting the Most From It

Once a drive on auto lift is installed correctly, ongoing care is straightforward but easy to neglect. Cables, rollers, and hydraulic fluid all need periodic inspection, and anchor bolts should be checked for torque after the first few months of regular use as concrete and hardware settle in.
