For exhaust work, the baseplate itself can occasionally sit in the way of a full driveshaft removal, but most techs adjust their approach after a week or two and it stops being an issue.

Weight Rating Reality for Fleet Trucks
A lot of fleet operators come to us thinking a 10,000-pound rated drive on auto lift will cover their trucks, and then we find out they’re running one-ton duallies with service bodies, toolboxes, and a full tank of fuel — easily 12,000 to 14,000 pounds loaded. We’ve quoted 14,000-pound rated units for exactly this reason, sized for the heaviest truck in the fleet plus a safety margin, not the average one.
Both overhead and baseplate configurations are available in these heavier ratings, so weight capacity alone shouldn’t be the deciding factor between the two styles. What should decide it is your ceiling height, your floor space, and how your technicians actually move around a vehicle during exhaust and driveline work. Concrete Floor and Anchoring Considerations
Fleet shops tend to have older concrete, sometimes poured decades before anyone imagined a 14,000-pound lift sitting on it. Baseplate configurations distribute load differently than four-post overhead units anchored independently at each column, and your slab thickness and rebar situation should factor into which one you choose. We check floor specs before quoting heavy-duty fleet installations because a lift is only as stable as the concrete underneath it.
In shops with questionable original pours, we’ve recommended baseplate designs specifically because the connected frame spreads load more evenly across a wider footprint than four independently-anchored overhead posts. It’s not a universal rule, but it’s a real consideration for older fleet buildings in southeast Iowa that were built for oil changes, not modern service trucks.
Sizing the Bay Before You Buy
Whichever configuration you land on, we lay out the lift in your actual bay before the sale goes through whenever possible. Fleet shops especially benefit from this because service trucks come in more shapes than passenger cars — extended cabs, service bodies, ladder racks — and a runway that looks fine on paper can turn out too narrow once the truck is actually parked between the posts.
