A drive on auto lift is the single best home-garage upgrade for a first-time buyer in Ankeny who wants to do brake service and rotor swaps on their own vehicles. That is not a sales pitch, it is what we tell everyone who calls us from the Ankeny and north Des Moines suburbs asking what to buy. Why A Four-Post Beats A Two-Post For A Home Garage

For a home garage, the four-post drive-on configuration wins on almost every metric that matters to a hobbyist. You do not need arm placement judgment. You do not need to think about pinch weld locations on your daily driver. You can store a second vehicle underneath during the off-season, which effectively doubles the usable square footage of a two-car garage. And you can install it without anchoring into the floor, which matters if your garage floor is a slab you do not want to drill into. All of those advantages are why a drive on auto lift is the more common home-garage choice in Ankeny.

The trade-off is a slightly less-open side view of the vehicle for suspension work, and a bit less flexibility for wheels-off work if you do not have a roller jack. Neither trade-off matters much for the typical home use case of brake service, oil changes, and light suspension. If you are a hardcore weekend racer who does full corner rebuilds every season, you might prefer a two-post. Everyone else should default to the four-post, and that is what we recommend to almost every first-time Ankeny buyer who walks into the conversation without a strong prior preference. It just works for the way home garages actually get used.

Concrete Slab Thickness For A Residential Ankeny Garage

Most Ankeny homes built in the last thirty years have a garage slab poured at four inches minimum, and that is enough for a home-garage four-post drive on auto lift with no supplemental pad. Older homes closer to downtown Ankeny sometimes have three-inch slabs from the sixties and seventies, and those are borderline. A three-inch slab can work with the right home-storage-grade four-post, but we would recommend a supplemental concrete pad or a switch to a lower-capacity unit for peace of mind. We can inspect the slab on a free sales visit before you order.

Rebar is not required for a home-garage four-post. Four-post lifts distribute load across four column baseplates, and the load per baseplate is much lower than what a two-post concentrates at each anchor point. If your slab is properly cured concrete of adequate thickness, rebar reinforcement is a nice-to-have but not a deal-breaker. If your slab has significant surface cracking directly under a proposed column location, we may recommend relocating the column a couple of feet or adding a small square of reinforced pad under that specific column. Small adjustments prevent big problems five years in.

Home-Garage Capacity Recommendations

Nine thousand pounds is the sweet spot capacity for a home-garage drive on auto lift in Ankeny. It covers every passenger vehicle, half-ton pickups, most three-quarter-ton pickups without heavy topper or ballast, and any classic muscle car or restoration project you might realistically pull under the roof. Seven thousand pounds is enough for most daily-driver sedans and small crossovers but leaves you no headroom if you ever add a truck to the garage. Twelve thousand pounds is overkill for almost any home garage unless you are storing a diesel dually.

The other capacity conversation is roller jack, which we will cover in a later section. For now, understand that the lift capacity is the platform total including anything you park on top of it, and the roller jack capacity is a separate rating for wheels-off work. Most home-garage buyers do not need a roller jack for basic brake service if they use a hydraulic floor jack from underneath at the axle. If you want the full commercial-shop workflow experience in your garage, add the roller jack. Otherwise, skip it and save the money for the tools you actually use every weekend on the car.

Ceiling Height And Garage Door Clearance

A home-garage four-post drive-on at full lift height typically needs about eleven feet of overhead clearance for a passenger vehicle and about twelve feet for a taller pickup with a topper. If your Ankeny garage has a standard eight-foot ceiling, you do not have enough overhead to raise the vehicle to full working height. You still have enough to raise it partway, which is fine for oil changes but not comfortable for standing brake work. Many home-garage buyers with eight-foot ceilings still use the lift regularly, they just work seated or crouched rather than standing.

A ten-foot ceiling is comfortable for a passenger vehicle at full height and cramped for a pickup. Twelve-foot ceilings are ideal and increasingly common in newer Ankeny custom builds and workshop additions. If you are considering adding a lift as part of a new garage build, spec the ceiling at twelve feet or higher during the architecture phase. Garage door height should match the ceiling minus the header, which for a twelve-foot ceiling usually lands the door at ten feet. That is enough clearance to drive any personal vehicle through, including a lifted truck.

Brake Service Workflow On A Home-Garage Drive-On

The typical brake service workflow on a home-garage drive on auto lift looks like this: drive the car onto the runway, engage the parking brake, raise the lift to about hip height, place a jack stand or a bottle jack under the front axle just inboard of the wheel, lift the axle slightly with the jack to unload the tire, remove the wheel, and swap the pads and rotors. Repeat for each corner. Total time for all four corners of a standard passenger car with new pads and rotors runs about ninety minutes for a competent home wrench.

If you added a roller jack to your order, the workflow gets faster: instead of a bottle jack per corner, the roller jack slides across the runway and lifts both front wheels together in one motion. That saves a couple minutes per corner and makes the whole job feel professional rather than improvised. For a home-garage owner who does their own brakes twice a year and their spouse’s car twice a year, the roller jack pays off in convenience and repeatability. Whether that is worth the twelve hundred dollar upcharge is a personal call that depends on how you value your Saturday mornings and how much brake work you actually do.

Install Day Expectations At Your Ankeny House

Install day at an Ankeny residence is a one-day job for our two-tech crew. We arrive with the lift on a freight trailer, unload with the ramps and dollies, position the columns in your garage, level the crossbeams, run the cables and hydraulic hose, fill and bleed the hydraulic system, and function-test the lift to full height. Total elapsed time is typically six to seven hours from arrival to a fully-tested lift ready to use. You do not need to be home the whole time but we do need access to the garage.

What we ask of you before install day: have the garage clear of stored items in a fifteen-foot square where the lift will go, have any pre-run electrical done if the outlet is not already close, and have a working 110-volt outlet available for our power tools during install. That is the whole prep list for a home-garage drive on auto lift. We handle everything else. If your garage is currently a storage jungle, we can push the install by a week or two while you clear it, but we would rather do that than try to work around boxes on the day of.

The rest is the working environment around it: good lighting, an organized tool wall, a compressor for air tools, and clear working room around all four sides. If your garage build-out is not yet complete, we recommend installing the lift first and then arranging the rest of the shop around it, because the lift position dictates workflow. Ankeny homeowners who plan the garage around the lift end up with a much better working space than those who try to squeeze a lift into a fully-built garage after the fact. Small planning difference, big daily-use payoff.
