Two Fleet Bays We Actually Installed Near Spirit Lake
The first bay we will describe is a five-truck landscaping fleet north of Milford. The owner runs three-quarter ton pickups with plow packages and needed a lift that could handle a loaded truck at roughly eight thousand pounds curb weight. He also does his own brake work in-house every February to save the outside labor bill during the slow season. We put in a nine-thousand-pound drive on auto lift with a four-thousand-pound roller jack and a fold-up ramp set. The install took a single day including the electrical drop.
The second bay is a lakes-area rental car and service outfit with a mixed fleet of about a dozen sedans and small crossovers. Volume is higher, weight is lower, and the shop cares more about turn time than raw capacity. We put in a seven-thousand-pound two-post asymmetric for that customer instead of a four-post. Both configurations work, but they optimize for different things, and picking the wrong one for your operation costs you time on every single brake job you turn for the next ten years. That is why we walk through it slowly before you sign.
Rotor Swap Time: Four-Post Versus Two-Post By The Clock
A four-post drive on auto lift adds roughly two to three minutes per rotor swap compared to a two-post. That sounds like nothing until you multiply it across a fleet servicing rotation. The reason is arm positioning: on a two-post, the arms are already off the frame and the wheel is in your hand the moment the lift is up. On a four-post, you have to position the roller jack under the axle, pump or air it up to lift the wheels off the runway, and only then can you spin the wheel off. That is the tax you pay for the platform.
The tax is worth paying in two situations. First, when the truck is heavy enough that a two-post lift ties up your capacity ceiling. Second, when the fleet mix is diverse enough that the pinch weld and pickup point configurations on a two-post are constantly changing and slowing the tech down. For the landscaper north of Milford, we ran the math and the four-post came out ahead because the plows added ballast to the front end and the two-post arms took longer to set safely for every truck than the roller jack did.
Garage Build-Out Sequence If You Chose The Four-Post
If you go with the four-post drive on auto lift, the build-out sequence is more forgiving. The lift does not require anchoring the same way a two-post does, so you can install the floor before the walls are up, or install the walls before the floor if the concrete pour is delayed by weather. That flexibility matters in the Iowa Great Lakes region where the freeze-thaw cycle can push a spring concrete pour into May. You can also relocate a four-post later without patching floor anchors, which is a real feature if the shop layout changes.
The sequence we recommend is: concrete pour first with a minimum four-inch slab at three thousand PSI, then 220-volt electrical rough-in with a dedicated single-phase circuit, then wall framing, then the lift install. Air-line kits and roller jacks get added after the lift is running, once you have used the bay for a week or two and know where you want the air drop and the jack storage. Rushing the air-line kit into the initial install almost always leads to it being in the wrong place, because the workflow only reveals itself once techs start actually using the bay.
Garage Build-Out Sequence If You Chose The Two-Post
A two-post install flips the sequence because the anchors have to go into fully cured concrete of the right thickness. In the Iowa Great Lakes region we spec a minimum four-and-a-quarter-inch slab at three thousand PSI, and we prefer four and a half inches. If the slab is thinner or older, we still might be able to make it work with a supplemental pad, but we will core-drill and check before we sign off. That inspection has to happen early in the build so you have time to fix a slab problem before the walls close in.
We usually pull the two-post permits and coordinate the concrete engineer directly if the shop is new construction. For a retrofit into an existing pole barn, we do a slab evaluation on the sales visit and give you a written pass or fail before you order the lift. The two-post is faster per brake job than a drive on auto lift, but it locks you into the location for the life of the building. If the fleet outgrows the bay and you need to reposition, the anchors and the concrete are staying where they are unless you saw-cut and patch.
Roller Jacks, Air Lines, And What Actually Speeds Up Brakes
The single biggest fleet-bay workflow upgrade is not the lift itself. It is the roller jack. A four-thousand-pound air-hydraulic roller jack on a four-post platform lets one tech lift both front or both rear wheels together in about twenty seconds. Without it, you are individually blocking each wheel. On a four-post drive on auto lift used for fleet brakes, the roller jack is not optional in our view: it is the difference between a lift that saves time and a lift that adds time compared to a two-post. Budget for it in the initial order.
The second upgrade is a hard air line to each column with quick disconnects at working height. Techs waste hours over a year dragging air hoses across the floor. Third is a dedicated impact holder on the column so the impact is always in reach. Fourth, and often overlooked, is good lighting mounted to the columns rather than the ceiling. Ceiling lights create shadow zones under the rockers of a lifted truck. Column-mounted LED strips solve that problem and cost about one hundred fifty dollars per column installed. All of these upgrades multiply the productivity of the lift itself.
Fleet Capacity Planning Beyond A Single Bay
Once you have one drive on auto lift running well, the second-bay conversation gets easier. Fleet shops that started with a four-post platform almost always add a two-post next, because they want the speed advantage on light passenger work and they now have the four-post covering heavy trucks. Shops that started with a two-post tend to add a four-post next for the same reason from the other direction, and also for indoor winter storage of a spare fleet vehicle. Either sequence works, and the second lift is often easier to install because the electrical and concrete lessons are already learned.

What The First Year Looks Like After Install
In the first year we expect a fleet operator to call us twice: once around month three for a small adjustment, usually cable tension on a four-post or an air line leak on either configuration, and once around month ten for the annual ALI inspection. The annual inspection is required by law for commercial lifts in most jurisdictions and it is an insurance requirement in almost all fleet policies we have seen. We do the inspection for less than the outside inspectors charge because we already know your equipment.
Cable replacement on a four-post typically comes at the seven-to-ten-year mark under fleet duty, and we stock every cable set we sell. Hydraulic hoses last about the same. What we almost never see fail in the first ten years is the structural steel, on either configuration, provided the lift was installed level and the anchors were torqued correctly. The install is the difference between a lift that lasts twenty years and one that gives you trouble at year five. That is worth saying plainly to any fleet operator making this decision for the first time.
