When a race team crew chief in southeast Iowa calls us about a drive on auto lift, the conversation almost always turns to the same fork in the road: is a 4-post drive-on the right tool for a shop that mostly does restoration and metal work, or is a 2-post with symmetric or asymmetric arms actually the better fit? When a drive on auto lift is the wrong tool for restoration

A drive on auto lift keeps the wheels loaded on the runways. For daily maintenance that’s a feature — wheel alignment stays natural, suspension is at ride height, exhaust hangers line up where they’ll land in the driveway. For restoration and heavy metal work it becomes a bug. When you’re cutting out a rusted rocker, welding in a new floor pan, or replacing a full quarter panel, you need the wheels off the ground so you can rotate the trailing arm, drop the fuel tank, and access frame rails from underneath without the drive tires in the way.

The other issue is body access. On a 4-post, the runways sit under the pinch welds. You can jack a car off the runways with rolling jacks, but you’re still working around two steel platforms that block clean 360-degree access to the underbody. For a race crew chief pulling a subframe or dropping a full drivetrain out of a project chassis, the 4-post gets in the way in a manner a 2-post never does. That’s the honest starting point of the decision tree, and it’s the reason single-lift race shops usually don’t pick a 4-post.

When a drive on auto lift is the right tool anyway

Even for a race shop, a drive on auto lift earns its keep as the second lift — the one that lives at the front of the bay and handles everything the 2-post shouldn’t. Alignment on the finished car. Corner-balance setup on a stanced restoration. Storage of a completed chassis while another project rolls in. Loading a car onto a trailer at a comfortable height. And of course, oil changes and diff service on the shop truck that hauls the trailer. Any time you need the wheels loaded, the 4-post is faster and safer than the 2-post you’d otherwise use.

We’ve quoted several southeast Iowa race shops where the setup ended up being a 2-post at the back for teardown and heavy metal work, and a 4-post drive-on at the front for setup, storage, and daily shop use. That combination is more expensive than one lift, but it’s the pattern that shows up over and over when we look at what the busiest race teams actually installed. If budget only allows one lift and restoration is the main use case, the 2-post wins. If two are affordable, both is genuinely the right answer, not a sales pitch.

Budget tier one: the used and import market under $4K

At the bottom of the budget tree sits the used market. A ten-year-old Rotary or Challenger 4-post pulls a fair market price of $2,500 to $3,500 in Iowa if the cables are recent, the safety locks all engage, and no columns are bent. We inspect used lifts for buyers who ask, and we sell parts to bring older ones back to spec. This is a legitimate path if you know what you’re buying and you’re prepared to replace cables and hoses as preventive maintenance in the first year of use.

The other sub-$4K path is a new imported drive on auto lift. Some are fine — the manufacturing has improved substantially over the last five years — but the accessory ecosystem is thin, replacement parts are slow, and warranty claims often mean shipping the whole lift back. For a race crew chief who values uptime, we usually push people out of this tier and into a used-Rotary or entry-level BendPak conversation. The extra $1,500 buys you a lift you can get parts for at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday, and that difference matters more than the sticker.

Budget tier two: new commercial at $5,000 to $8,000

The middle tier of the decision tree is the sweet spot for a race or restoration shop that’s putting a drive on auto lift into daily use. A new Rotary or Challenger 4-post at 9,000 to 14,000 lb capacity lands in the $5,000 to $8,000 range depending on options. That gets you ALI-certified engineering, in-stock parts, a real warranty pathway, and a lift you can hand off to a helper without worrying about it. Rolling jacks add $1,500 to $2,000 on top, and we usually recommend them for anyone doing wheel-off work regularly.

Above $8,000 the discussion becomes 4-post with full alignment integration — turntables, slip plates, alignment-ready runways — and that’s a specific commercial use case, not a race-shop use case. For a southeast Iowa restoration shop, our normal quote lands right around $6,500 for the lift and $1,800 for jacks, installed. Symmetric arms explained — the 2-post alternative

Once the buyer has ruled the 4-post drive on auto lift out for restoration duty, the next fork is symmetric versus asymmetric 2-post arms. Symmetric arms are the classic setup — all four arms are the same length, so the car sits centered between the columns. The advantage is even weight distribution and a slightly higher weight capacity for the same column size. The disadvantage is that the doors open into the columns. If you want to get in and out of the vehicle while it’s up on the lift, you can’t do it cleanly.

Symmetric 2-post lifts still dominate heavy-duty commercial applications — anything above 12,000 lb capacity, most dually work, most fleet applications where the truck goes up and stays up. For a race shop restoring older iron with heavier body panels and where door access on the lift is not a priority, symmetric is often the better technical choice. The trade-off is real, though, and we walk through it before ordering. This is one of the few decisions that’s genuinely one-way once installed, since column bases are anchored to the slab in the orientation you pick.

Asymmetric arms and rocker-pinch clearance

Asymmetric arms shift the car back in the bay by rotating the columns 30 degrees and shortening the front arms. That opens the door swing so you can get in and out of the driver’s seat when the car is up. For a restoration shop where you’re constantly climbing in to check something, sit in the seat to hit the ignition, or reach the shifter, asymmetric is the correct pick nine times out of ten.

The trade-off is asymmetric loads the rear arms harder and requires more careful arm placement. The rocker-pinch weld — the manufacturer’s designated lift point — has to be within a defined window of the arm pad, or you’re bending arms over time. Modern asymmetric arms handle this fine, and we teach customers how to spot the pinch on their specific vehicles at install. For most race and restoration shops in southeast Iowa where the daily fleet is a mix of pickup, project car, and shop truck, asymmetric is the answer we recommend most often on a single-lift build. The exception is a shop that only lifts one class of vehicle — say a dedicated 3/4-ton diesel shop where the doors never need to open on the lift. Then symmetric wins on capacity and simplicity.

Our final call for a race or restoration shop

Start with a 2-post asymmetric — that’s the lift you’ll use every day. Race prep, alignment setup, corner-balancing, and storage as the main use? Start with a 4-post drive-on and add rolling jacks. Doing both and can afford two lifts? Buy both, put the 2-post at the back of the bay and the 4-post at the front. That’s the layout we see in the shops that don’t call us back for a second lift six months later.

Budget-wise, plan on $5,500 to $7,500 installed for a proper 2-post asymmetric, and $6,500 to $8,000 installed for a 4-post drive-on with rolling jacks.
