When an overlanding builder in the Iowa Great Lakes region asked us whether to buy used or new for his first drive on auto lift, we ended up walking through a full case study on a lift we installed for a similar overlanding shop north of Spirit Lake last fall. The used-vs-new decision on a 4-post isn’t as simple as the online forums make it sound. This piece walks through that case study, the actual decision framework we use, and the specific inspection process that separates a legitimate used lift from a liability parked in your driveway. The Iowa Great Lakes overlanding shop: setup and needs
The shop is a two-bay pole barn on a rural lot outside the Great Lakes chain, run by an owner-operator who builds and services overlanding-spec 4Runners, Tacomas, and full-size Broncos. Twelve-foot ceilings, four-inch slab, single-phase 240V service. Daily work is oil changes on lifted vehicles, gearbox and transfer-case fluid service, brake work, and occasional rear-locker installs. Vehicles range from 4,200 lb stock 4Runners to 6,800 lb built Broncos with steel bumpers and skid plates all around. He was outgrowing the drive-under floor-jack workflow and wanted a permanent drive on auto lift.
Requirements were specific: enough runway length for a long-wheelbase Bronco (135 inches), enough capacity for a fully built rig (12K minimum), enough drive-through clearance for skid-plate armor and rock sliders, and drive-on ramps that could handle a body-lifted vehicle without bottoming out. That combination isn’t just any 4-post — it’s a specific commercial-grade lift with either a taller ramp angle or a modified ramp profile. The other requirement was that install had to fit into a two-day window because the shop couldn’t afford a longer service closure at the start of overlanding season.
The used-vs-new decision framework
We use a five-question framework on used-vs-new decisions for commercial-grade lifts. First: is the used lift the specific model that meets requirements, or is it what happens to be for sale? A used lift you have to build a workaround around isn’t a deal. Second: is the ALI Gold Label present on every column, and is inspection documentation current? Third: what’s the cable and hydraulic history — original, replaced once, replaced twice? Fourth: are the columns straight and undamaged, and are the safety locks all engaging cleanly? Fifth: what’s the delta in installed cost between used-plus-repair-budget and new-with-warranty?
For the overlanding shop, question one killed most of the used inventory available in Iowa at the time. Most 12K used commercial 4-posts on the market had 172-inch runways, and he needed 178 inches minimum for the long-wheelbase Bronco. The one lift that met the runway requirement was a 2013 Rotary SM14 drive on auto lift in southeast Iowa with unknown cable history and a Gold Label sticker missing from one column. We drove down and inspected in person before writing any recommendation.
What we found on the used-lift inspection
The inspection surfaced three issues. First, the missing Gold Label on one column meant re-certification would require an ALI-certified re-inspection and possibly a partial replacement — cost estimate $600 to $1,200. Second, the safety locks on column three were engaging late, suggesting worn or improperly adjusted latch springs — cost estimate $250 to $400 in parts plus a half-day of labor. Third, the cables had light corrosion at the sheave termination, suggesting the lift had lived in a garage with humidity issues at some point — replacement recommended, cost estimate $800 for cable set and labor.
Total used-lift cost: $4,200 seller asking, plus $1,500 to $2,500 in remediation, plus $1,200 install and re-certification. All-in $7,000 to $8,000 for a 13-year-old lift with unknown remaining life. New 2026 Rotary SM14 delivered and installed with rolling jacks and full manufacturer warranty: $9,800. The delta was $1,800 to $2,800 — real money, but not the four-thousand-dollar delta the seller had implied. That’s the framework doing its job — surfacing the real cost of used, not the sticker.
Why the shop chose new instead
The decision came down to two factors. First, the $1,800 to $2,800 delta bought a full 15-year manufacturer structural warranty, a five-year moving-parts warranty, and factory ALI Gold certification. On a shop lift used daily, that’s meaningful risk transfer. Second, the used lift had unknown remaining life on cables and hydraulics, so budgeting for a second round of parts within three to five years was reasonable. Layered on top, the new lift saved the two-day repair-and-recertify window that the used lift would have needed before first use.
He bought new. That’s what most of the framework applications end up recommending when the buyer values uptime and the delta is under $3,000 on a 12K-or-larger commercial lift. The used market wins more often on lifts under 9K where the delta is proportionally larger, and on home-garage situations where downtime cost is zero. Commercial-shop used deals rarely pencil out unless the specific model is a perfect match and the inspection is clean. The new drive on auto lift: install day report
Install day for the new drive on auto lift ran as most new commercial 4-post installs do. Two-tech crew, arrival at 8 a.m., crated lift on a small trailer, unbox in the driveway. Columns assembled and rolled into position by 10 a.m. Runways and crossties in place by noon. Cable routing and initial safety-lock adjustments through the afternoon, first raise by 4 p.m. Total time on site: eight hours plus a 30-minute drive to a nearby diesel shop for the electrical drop the customer needed for his tire machine.
The one hiccup was the ramp modification for the body-lifted Bronco. The stock 4-post ramps are angled about 22 degrees, which works for stock-height vehicles but bottoms out on a 3-inch body lift. We swapped in the low-angle ramps we had in inventory at the Ames warehouse — a small aftermarket accessory that adds two feet of run-in and cuts the approach angle to about 14 degrees. Any built overlanding rig up to about 8 inches of body-plus-suspension lift clears cleanly. That mod is a common request from the overlanding community and one we now inventory year-round for shops in this niche.
First 90 days of oil-change and fluid-service use
The follow-up visit at 90 days gave us the field data. The shop was running an average of 4.2 vehicles per day through the lift, split roughly 60% oil changes and fluid service, 25% brake and wheel-off work, and 15% rear-locker installs and driveline modifications. Zero safety-lock issues, zero cable issues, one adjustment to the ramp bolts after the first hard winter freeze-thaw. The drive on auto lift had already handled the shop’s busiest season transition without complaint.
What surprised the owner most was how much faster oil changes and gearbox fluid service ran on the lift versus the previous floor-jack workflow. He estimated a 30% time reduction on routine fluid service and a 50% reduction on transfer-case work, mostly because the standing-underneath access simplified reach and torque application. The productivity gain by itself was tracking toward a two-year lift payback based on the extra service volume the shop could now handle. That’s what a good used-vs-new decision looks like at day 90 — the numbers agree with the framework recommendation from the start.
What this case study tells us about your build
Every used-vs-new decision on a commercial drive on auto lift comes back to the same five questions. In the Great Lakes overlanding case, the framework surfaced that the used option cost more than the seller implied once remediation was included, and that the new option’s warranty and downtime savings closed most of the remaining gap. That’s the normal outcome for commercial-shop scenarios. It’s not the normal outcome for home-garage or hobby scenarios, where used often wins by a wide margin because downtime and warranty risk carry less weight.
