Independent pro-shop owners around Dubuque have been calling us about drive on auto lifts specifically for seasonal vehicle storage in growing numbers, and the honest reason is that the used-car market has made it cheaper to hold onto a customer’s summer car through the winter than to store it off-site. A four-post drive-on is the tool that makes that economics work, because it stacks two vehicles in a footprint the size of one. But the configuration you pick matters more than the brand, and the freight and unloading logistics matter more than the configuration. What Seasonal Storage Actually Asks From a Lift

Seasonal storage is a different workload from daily service, and the drive on auto lifts we spec for storage look different from the ones we spec for a wrench-heavy shop. The storage vehicle typically goes onto the platform in October and comes off in April, so the lift sits static under load for months at a time. That means seal life on the hydraulic cylinder becomes a real number, cable-tension calibration matters more, and the mechanical safety cams have to be trustworthy for a long dwell. It also means the runway needs to be wide enough for a variety of vehicles the customer might store, because the pro-shop owner does not always know a year ahead what car is coming in for winter.

Cycle count is low: maybe six up-and-down movements per stored vehicle per season for cleaning, tire rotation, or an occasional service. That low cycle rate is easy on any four-post we sell. Where the workload gets specific is the width of the vehicle and the length of the runway. Storage customers ship everything from a Miata to a full-size dually, and the wider trucks stress the outer edge of the runway on standard-width lifts. That single dimension often forces us up to a wide-runway configuration for a storage-focused install. Neither of the two configurations below is wrong. They just serve slightly different customer mixes.

Configuration One: Standard-Width Nine-Thousand-Pound

The first of the two drive on auto lifts we quote for storage work is a nine thousand pound standard-width four-post with 175 inch runways, drop-down front approach ramps only, no alignment cutouts, and no rolling jack. Standard runway width is right at 41 inches inside-to-inside, which fits every passenger car and most compact SUVs comfortably. The lift is anchored to the slab, the safety cams engage every two-and-a-half inches, and the hydraulic cylinder is a single stage. This configuration is our lowest-price storage-capable four-post and it lands in the mid-tier of our overall quote range.

Configuration One works perfectly for a Dubuque pro shop whose storage customers ship sedans, coupes, and compact SUVs. It does not comfortably handle a full-size crew-cab pickup because the outer tire will hang over the runway edge on wider platforms like a Ram 2500 or an F-350. For a shop whose storage list is mostly summer sports cars and daily-driver sedans, that limitation never comes up. The install footprint is small, the shipping weight is manageable at roughly two thousand pounds for the crated unit, and the unloading can be done by a single forklift or a small gantry crane at the delivery bay. Freight from our Ames warehouse to Dubuque is a half-day truck run.

Configuration Two: Wide-Runway Twelve-Thousand-Pound

The second configuration is a twelve thousand pound wide-runway four-post with 185 to 205 inch runways depending on the customer’s storage list, drop-down approach ramps on both ends for drive-through, no alignment cutouts, and no rolling jack. Wide runway width is 43 to 45 inches inside-to-inside depending on the manufacturer and the option we pick. That extra two to four inches of width per runway is the difference between a full-size crew-cab pickup fitting comfortably or sitting with the tire riding the runway edge. For a Dubuque pro shop with any dually or lifted-pickup customers on the storage list, Configuration Two is the right pick.

The added cost of Configuration Two versus Configuration One is real but modest. You pay for the wider steel, the longer runway, and the higher-capacity cables and cylinder. The install and freight cost is roughly a hundred to two hundred dollars more because the crate is heavier and the pallet is bigger. Total install time is unchanged at one day for our two-tech crew. If the customer is honestly going to store a crew-cab dually every winter, spending the extra money on Configuration Two now is far cheaper than replacing the lift in five years. We push storage-focused shops toward Configuration Two whenever the storage list includes anything wider than a mid-size SUV.

Freight and Unloading Logistics

Freight logistics are where storage installs get tricky, because the customer often does not have shop-floor forklift access. Every set of drive on auto lifts we ship arrives on a single flatbed pallet, with the columns strapped upright and the runway sections banded flat. Total shipping weight is roughly two thousand pounds for a standard-width nine thousand pound unit and up to twenty-six hundred pounds for a wide-runway twelve thousand pound unit. That is more than a residential-service tail-lift truck can handle, and it is more than two people can hand-unload from a flatbed. You need a forklift with pallet forks or a gantry crane rated for two-and-a-half tons.

Our default on Dubuque-area installs is to send our own truck with our own forklift. We back the flatbed into the bay opening, drop the pallet at the install location, and unload it directly onto the shop floor with the forklift. That eliminates the customer having to arrange a rental forklift or a friend with a farm tractor. If your bay opening cannot accept a flatbed, we shift to a gantry-crane offload from the yard and forklift the components inside one at a time. Either way the customer does not touch the freight. That single service is why we schedule installs ourselves rather than shipping the lift blind and asking the customer to figure it out.

Anchoring, Slab, and Ceiling for Storage Work

Anchoring is optional on many drive on auto lifts, but for a storage-focused install we anchor every time. The reason is that a stored vehicle sits on the platform under load for months, and a small amount of hydraulic-cylinder settling over that period is normal. Anchoring the columns to the slab prevents the columns from shifting during the settling, which keeps the runway level over the storage season. Anchor requirement is four expansion anchors per column, minimum three-and-a-half inches of embedment into a slab that is at least four inches thick with fresh three-thousand-PSI concrete or better.

Ceiling height for a storage install is driven by the height of the storage vehicle plus the height of the daily-driver vehicle underneath, plus at least six inches of clearance under the storage vehicle for safe walking access. In most Dubuque-area shops we work with, twelve foot ceilings clear a stored sports car above and a daily-driver sedan below with room to spare. Storage of a raised pickup above a raised pickup below requires more ceiling and we usually push those customers toward a taller pole-barn addition rather than trying to make it work in an existing bay. We measure ceiling height and clear-span depth on-site before we quote either configuration.

Total Cost of Ownership Across Ten Years

Over a ten-year window drive on auto lifts of either configuration are cheap to own compared to a two-post storing the same volume of vehicles. Hydraulic-fluid change every three to five years, cable inspection annually with cable replacement roughly at year eight or nine in a low-cycle storage environment, safety-lock verification at every annual service, and periodic re-torque of the anchor bolts. Neither configuration requires meaningful electrical, plumbing, or structural intervention beyond the initial slab and outlet. Both use the same maintenance parts kit that we stock at our Ames warehouse.

Where the two configurations diverge on cost over ten years is resale. Configuration One holds decent used-market value in the standard-width four-post pool. Configuration Two holds much stronger resale value because the wide-runway higher-capacity units are always in shorter supply on the secondary market. A pro shop that resells its Configuration Two lift after ten years typically recovers a much larger percentage of the purchase price than a Configuration One resale. That is not the reason to buy Configuration Two, but it is a genuine tiebreaker when the storage list has any real chance of including a full-size truck. What We Would Install for a Dubuque Pro Shop

For the Dubuque pro shop we quoted last fall, we picked Configuration Two: a twelve thousand pound wide-runway four-post with 205 inch runways, drop-down approach ramps on both ends, dual safety-cam release, and slab anchoring. The customer had a storage list that included two Corvettes, a Miata, a full-size Ram crew-cab, and a lifted Wrangler. The nine thousand pound standard-width Configuration One would have handled the sports cars and the Wrangler but the Ram would have ridden the runway edges. Once we ran the numbers on Configuration Two the customer never looked back.

Install day was one full day with our two-tech crew, our own truck, and our own forklift. Delivery, unloading, assembly, hydraulic bleeding, safety verification, and startup walkthrough all fit inside the eight-hour window. The Dubuque shop was storing its first winter vehicle on the platform the same week.
