When a European-marque specialty shop starts pricing drive on auto lifts for suspension and shock work, the first question we hear from east-central Iowa owners is whether a four-post platform really lets a tech get to the strut towers and control arms. Fair question, and one we have answered dozens of times over the years. Drive On Auto Lifts and the Suspension-Work Myth

Every time a shop upgrades from a used two-post to a fresh set of drive on auto lifts, someone in the group chat says the same thing: you cannot do suspension work on a drive-on because the wheels are stuck on the runway. We understand where that comes from. On a two-post the wheels hang free the moment the arms come up, so unloading a strut or pulling a control arm feels natural. But that is not the only way to work a European car. Every serious BMW dealer service floor and most Porsche independents we have walked through run a mix of two-post and four-post bays, and the four-posts handle plenty of suspension jobs every day.

The truth is that drive on auto lifts fitted with the correct rolling-jack setup unload a corner of the vehicle exactly the way a two-post arm does. You raise the whole car on the runways first, drop the rolling jack under the manufacturer subframe pad, jack that corner, and now the tire hangs free while the runway still carries three corners. That is the same mechanical outcome as a two-post pad, and for a lot of European suspension jobs it is actually safer because the car remains fully supported by the platform. The myth survives because plenty of shops skip the rolling jack when they buy their first four-post. Once we spec it in, the objection disappears.

How Slip Plates and Turn Plates Actually Solve It

The second half of what a European-marque shop actually needs on a lift is not just the ability to unload a corner. It is alignment capability. Any Audi, BMW, or VW that comes in for a shock or strut is very likely leaving with a full four-wheel alignment, and if you cannot handle that in-house you are either buying rack time down the street or losing the ticket. Real alignment-capable drive on auto lifts ship with recessed front turn plates and rear slip plates already cut into the runways. That is the version we spec for Euro shops in east-central Iowa nine times out of ten.

The turn plates let the front tires rotate freely for caster sweeps and camber adjustment, and the rear slip plates release lateral load on the rear tires so the wheel-alignment heads read straight. A base four-post that is rated for capacity but has no slip-plate cutouts will still lift the car, but you cannot align on it, so if you buy that version you will regret it inside a year. When we quote a European specialist we default to the alignment-ready runway with pre-cut slip and turn plate pockets, so the same lift does an oil service, a shock replacement, and a full alignment without moving the vehicle across the shop. That is the workflow that keeps a two-bay Euro shop profitable at Iowa labor rates.

Lift-Bay Layout for a European-Marque Shop

Bay geometry matters more on a drive-on than it does on a two-post, because the runway footprint is fixed and you cannot swing arms out of the way. A standard alignment-capable four-post from Rotary or Challenger runs roughly 21 feet nose-to-tail overall with the approach ramps folded down, and the runway width is sized for passenger cars rather than for a Sprinter or an extended-cab pickup. For an Audi, BMW, Porsche, or Mercedes shop that is actually a feature. Runways sized for European sedans and SUVs put the tire square in the middle of the platform and give the tech clean access to the rocker jack points and pinch-weld pads.

Column-to-column width is where most owners get pinched. Add roughly 12 to 14 inches per side beyond the runway for column bulk and door clearance. If you want a real work bay you need another four feet on the driver side for a rolling toolbox and another three to four feet on the passenger side for a wall or the next bay column. That is why we tell east-central Iowa shops the practical minimum bay width for a comfortable alignment-capable drive-on is fifteen feet. Push a bay to thirteen and you will regret it every time you swing a door open with a headlamp-calibration target mounted. The good news is that twenty-four feet of bay depth is plenty for the runway plus front approach ramps, and twelve-foot ceilings clear every reasonably tall car we have ever seen on a Euro shop floor.

Rolling Jacks Turn a Drive-On Into a Two-Post Alternative

We hinted at this earlier, but it deserves its own section, because rolling jacks are the single accessory that decides whether a set of drive on auto lifts feels like a step down from your old two-post or a real step up. A rolling jack is a hydraulic or air-hydraulic bridge that sits on top of the runway and rolls fore-aft between the two rails. Under load it lifts up to six or seven thousand pounds, plenty for any European sedan or SUV a specialty shop is going to touch, and it raises the car off the runway by another twenty inches or so when you extend it. That is how a tech pulls a wheel, a strut, a control arm, a subframe bolt, or a rear differential on a four-post platform.

For east-central Iowa European specialists we default to two rolling jacks per lift, so you can drop both front corners at the same time for a pair of shocks and never move the car. A single-jack setup works, and it saves a few hundred dollars up front, but by the second month you will be re-jacking the other corner for every axle-pair job and hating yourself for it. We stock rolling jacks from the same manufacturer as the base lift so pads and adapters match, and we ship them with the standard European pinch-weld adapter block set already in the crate. Very few of our Iowa Euro accounts buy adapters separately after we deliver the platform.

Capacity, Reach, and Runway Length for German Sedans

Capacity confuses first-time buyers of drive on auto lifts because the number on the label is total capacity, split evenly between corners in theory but sometimes unevenly in practice. An eight thousand pound lift will handle every current passenger car and most compact SUVs. A nine thousand pound lift covers heavier European SUVs like a Cayenne, a Q7, or a G-Wagen with room to spare. Once you are talking about a lifted late-model Range Rover or an X7 with the tow package, we push shops toward a ten or twelve thousand pound rated runway just so you are not living at ninety percent of the sticker every day.

Every install we do at a European specialist starts with a conversation about the heaviest vehicle they have had in the shop in the last twelve months, and we spec off that number, not the average. Runway length is the other lever. Standard 175 to 185 inch runways clear every current German sedan and most SUVs. If you also service Sprinter vans or the occasional stretched Escalade sitting on a shop floor next door, jump to a 205 inch runway now, because you cannot add length later. For most east-central Iowa Euro shops the sweet spot is a nine or ten thousand pound alignment-ready platform with a 185 inch runway, two rolling jacks, and drop-down approach ramps on both ends. That is the configuration we have installed most often, and it is the one that gets left in place when a shop expands.

Ceiling Height, Column Height, and Overhead Cutoffs

Every set of drive on auto lifts has two height numbers: the maximum runway height and the overall column height with the runway fully extended. In an east-central Iowa European shop with a modern insulated ceiling, you almost always have twelve feet or better to work with, and every mainstream four-post we sell fits inside that envelope with room for the overhead safety bar. The exception is the tall-column extension packages some vendors offer for shops that want a taller rise. Those need thirteen feet of clear ceiling and sometimes push into your open-web joists, so we measure ceiling height and web depth on-site before ordering anything.

Overhead cutoff bars are non-negotiable on new four-posts. That is the padded bar at the top of the columns that pops the hydraulics off if the roof of a raised vehicle contacts it. It saves antennas, ski racks, and roof-rack crossbars from becoming very expensive scrap. For a European specialist that sees roof boxes and OEM crossbars on daily-driver X5s and Q7s, the cutoff bar is worth every dollar. We check it during installation and again at annual service. Column height is usually about 88 inches on standard-rise models and 96 to 100 inches on tall-rise packages, so a ten-foot Iowa pole-barn ceiling can typically handle the tall version if the light fixtures are laid out for it. We map that on-site before we quote a final number.
