The Marion Shop and What They Bought

The Marion truck shop that pulled us into this project services medium-duty box trucks, dually pickups, and small commercial vehicles for a mixed customer base of contractors, local delivery fleets, and one municipal account. Their old lift was a fourteen-thousand-pound four-post that had aged out after twenty-plus years, and the replacement decision was between a similar fourteen-thousand-pound unit and a step up to eighteen or twenty thousand pounds. They landed on a set of drive on auto lifts rated at eighteen thousand pounds because their customer mix had drifted heavier over the years and the extra capacity gave them headroom for the next decade.

Runway length was the second big decision. Standard heavy-duty four-post runways run 205 inches, which handles a full-length dually and most box trucks up to about twenty feet of overall length. The Marion shop wanted to service the occasional twenty-four foot box truck on the platform, so we quoted a 230-inch extended runway option instead. That decision added meaningful cost but it opened up an entire class of customer they had been turning away for years. Runway width was standard heavy-duty at 42 inches, wide enough for dual rear wheels on a Class 4 chassis without any tire hanging over the edge.

Cost Breakdown: The Lift Itself

The lift portion of the drive on auto lifts quote for the Marion shop came in at the low end of the heavy-duty range. That covered the eighteen-thousand-pound four-post, the 230-inch extended runways, drop-down front approach ramps only, no alignment cutouts, and the manufacturer standard-safety package with mechanical cam release. Add-ons we recommended and the customer approved: a single air-hydraulic rolling jack rated at seven thousand pounds for the wheel work, an air-line kit to feed the rolling jack from their existing compressor, and a wireless pendant control upgrade.

The rolling jack added roughly the cost of a mid-tier commercial jack. The air-line kit was under two hundred dollars in parts. The wireless pendant added a few hundred dollars beyond the base wired pendant. Total for the lift and factory-installed options was in the upper end of our heavy-duty four-post quote range. That number does not include freight, install labor, unloading equipment, or any slab or electrical prep. It is just the manufactured hardware landed at our Ames warehouse and ready to ship to Marion. That segregation between hardware cost and install cost is important because it lets you compare quotes across vendors on an apples-to-apples basis.

Cost Breakdown: Freight From Manufacturer to Iowa

Freight for heavy-duty drive on auto lifts is not trivial. The crated eighteen-thousand-pound unit ships in three pieces: two column bundles and one runway-and-power-unit bundle. Total crated weight is roughly three thousand two hundred pounds and total pallet count is three. Manufacturer freight from the factory to our Ames warehouse ran in the low four figures for that shipment, which is a normal number for a heavy-duty class-eight LTL move from an upper-Midwest lift manufacturer. We eat that freight cost as part of our landed quote and we do not pass it on separately, but it is real money and it belongs in the honest cost breakdown.

From our Ames warehouse to the Marion shop we run our own truck. Delivery, unloading, and install labor are bundled into a single install fee that covers a two-tech crew for one full day, our forklift, all rigging, and the return trip. Cost Breakdown: Slab, Anchors, and Bay Prep

Slab prep for heavy-duty drive on auto lifts is where a lot of first-time shop owners get caught. The Marion shop had an original slab that measured five inches with fiber reinforcement and no visible cracking, which was more than adequate for the eighteen-thousand-pound column loads. We anchored the columns with wedge anchors, four per column, with four-inch embedment. Total anchor cost was under a hundred dollars in hardware. If the slab had been under four inches or had shown cracking near the intended anchor points we would have quoted a slab-pour or a patch-and-cure preceding the install, but neither was needed.

Bay prep beyond the slab included running the air line from the compressor closet to the driver-side column, installing a new twenty-amp two-hundred-twenty-volt outlet at the power-side column base to feed the hydraulic power unit, and adding an overhead light bar over the platform because the existing bay lighting was too low. The electrical work was subbed to a licensed local electrician and ran in the low hundreds of dollars. The air-line install we did in-house during our install day. Total bay prep including electrical and light was in the mid-hundreds. That is a real number and it varies by bay, so we quote it separately after the site visit.

Cost Breakdown: Rolling Jack Accessories and Adapters

The seven-thousand-pound rolling jack on the Marion drive on auto lifts install came with a standard adapter pad set covering most passenger-vehicle pinch-weld pads. For medium-duty truck work the shop needed a heavy-duty frame-cradle adapter kit that fits under full-frame vehicles at the manufacturer-designated lift points. That adapter kit ran a few hundred dollars beyond the base rolling jack. We also added a spare pad set because pads are the one accessory shops lose over the years, and a spare set at purchase time is far cheaper than a rush shipment later when the shop is down.

Additional accessories the Marion shop bought at install time: a manufacturer-supplied maintenance kit with spare hydraulic fluid, filters, and a torque wrench sized for the anchor bolts and the runway hardware. That kit ran under two hundred dollars and it typically pays for itself the first time a tech needs to top off the reservoir at ten in the morning instead of running to a parts house. We include the kit as a recommended add-on on every heavy-duty install and most customers take it. The accessories portion of the total was under a thousand dollars, which is a small percentage of the overall project cost.

Cost Breakdown: Install Day and Startup Training

Install day for the Marion drive on auto lifts ran a full nine hours with our two-tech crew. That included offloading the columns and runways from our truck with the forklift, positioning the columns per the layout we drew at the site visit, drop-setting the runways, aligning column verticality with a laser, torquing anchor bolts to specification, filling and bleeding the hydraulic system, cycling the lift ten times under no load to verify safety cams and cable tension, and running the wireless pendant through its pairing procedure. The startup walkthrough with the shop’s lead tech took another hour at the end of the day.

Startup training covered daily inspection, weekly inspection, monthly maintenance, safety-lock verification, rolling-jack operation, wheel-stop use, and drop-down ramp deployment. We also walked through what to do if the lift ever refuses to lower cleanly, which is almost always a stuck safety cam rather than a hydraulic issue. That training is included in the install fee and we do not charge for it separately. If additional techs join the shop later, we will run a shortened refresher training remotely at no charge for the first year. That kind of post-install support is why heavy-duty accounts stay with us for the life of the lift.

Total Project Cost and What It Bought
