An off-road and overlanding builder in Waterloo installed a drive-on 4-post from us two years ago and put it through more tire rotation and wheel work than most home shops ever will. The Setup In Waterloo

His shop is a 40-by-60 metal building on a six-inch slab with a 14-foot ceiling. Three service bays, one of which has a drive-on 4-post rated at 14,000 pounds with 90-inch platform width to handle wide-track builds on aftermarket wheels. He runs about 40 tire rotations a month across his own build queue plus a handful of paying customers, so the lift sees genuine commercial-grade duty even though the shop itself is one-man. Drive on auto lifts in this kind of use case cycle up and down more often than average, and cable tension is one of the things that moves over time.

He noticed the problem when a corner started dropping about a half inch faster than the other three during descent. That is the classic first symptom of a cable tension issue on a 4-post, and it is exactly the symptom the maintenance manual tells you to watch for. Symptom Isolation And Initial Diagnosis

The first step in any warranty claim on drive on auto lifts is isolating the actual failure mode. A slow-descending corner can be caused by a loose cable tension nut, a cable that has stretched more than the other three, a sticky sheave bearing, or a hydraulic cylinder that is bypassing internally. Each cause has a different remedy, and warranty coverage depends on which one it turns out to be. Cables are typically warranted, cylinders are warranted, but tension nuts backing off from normal use are considered adjustment and not a warranty item.

We sent a tech out the following morning with a torque wrench, a cable gauge, and a spare cable set in case the diagnosis pointed that way. About ninety minutes on site confirmed the issue was a specific tension nut that had backed off past the manufacturer’s spec. The tech re-torqued all four nuts to the manual’s value, verified cable tension across all four cables was within tolerance, and cycled the lift six times fully loaded to confirm the corner tracked correctly.

What Was And Wasn’t Warranty

Here is where the case study gets useful. The tension nut adjustment itself was not a warranty claim because tension nuts drifting under normal use is expected maintenance. However, the visit was covered under our free-visit policy for lifts we installed within the last three years, so the customer paid nothing out of pocket. If the diagnosis had turned up a cable that had stretched beyond spec or a cylinder that was bypassing, those would have been factory warranty items and we would have filed with the manufacturer for parts.

This distinction — factory warranty covers manufacturing defects, not normal maintenance — is one of the things new lift buyers get wrong most often. Drive on auto lifts are mechanical equipment, and mechanical equipment needs periodic adjustment. Cable tension checks belong on a six-month interval for any lift running commercial-grade cycles. The warranty is a backstop for defects, not a substitute for maintenance.

The Documentation Trail

Every warranty case on drive on auto lifts goes through a documentation trail. On our end, we open a ticket with the lift’s serial number, install date, and current cycle count if the customer tracks it. We attach photos of the symptom and the diagnostic readings. If the case escalates to a factory warranty parts claim, we file directly with Rotary or BendPak or whoever built the unit, and the parts ship to us for delivery to the customer at no charge.

For this Waterloo customer, the documentation trail took about twenty minutes of paperwork after the on-site visit. He got a signed diagnostic sheet that logged the pre-adjustment cable readings, the torque values applied, and the post-adjustment cycle test. That sheet lives in his shop binder alongside the original install checklist, which is exactly where lift documentation should live for owners who plan to resell or file future claims.

Preventive Maintenance That Would Have Caught It Earlier

The tension nut had probably been drifting for a few months before the corner-lag symptom got obvious. If the customer had been doing quarterly cable inspections himself with a torque wrench, he would have caught it at the 25 percent drift point instead of the 60 percent drift point where he actually called us. That’s not a criticism — most one-man commercial shops don’t have quarterly inspection time — but it is worth calling out because preventive maintenance on drive on auto lifts is cheap compared to reactive service calls.

BendPak carries five-year structure and one-year wear items on their home-garage line. Atlas runs shorter overall but has a competitive price point. We recommend that customers pick the warranty that matches how hard they’ll use the lift — a home-garage owner who lifts a car twice a month doesn’t need commercial-grade warranty coverage, but a shop like this Waterloo builder absolutely does.

It has now cycled another few hundred loads since the visit with no drift and no symptoms.
