A car collector in southern Minnesota called us early last year with a specific storage problem and a specific service problem, and both of them pointed toward drive on auto lifts. He wanted to keep a driver-quality classic on top and a daily under it in a 30-by-40 pole building with 12-foot side walls — exactly the setup we hear about most often from home-garage buyers across the upper Midwest. He also needed to raise each car once a year to do a safety and mechanical inspection before it went on the road. His year-one spec comparison, from the models he shortlisted through the install and first annual inspection, is a useful case study for anyone in the same seat.

The Three Models He Shortlisted

He came to us with a shortlist of three drive on auto lifts: a 9,000 lb standard-height BendPak with a 63-inch rise, a 9,000 lb wide-platform Rotary with a 71-inch rise, and an 8,000 lb Atlas storage lift with a 72-inch rise. All three would physically fit his building, all three had ALI Gold certification, and all three came in at different price points and different feature sets. The spec differences that mattered most were runway length, rise height, and platform width for what he actually planned to store on top.

He measured his classic — a wide-body coupe from the mid-70s — at 78 inches wide across the widest point of the fenders, and 208 inches long overall. He measured his daily — a modern sedan — at 72 inches wide and 194 inches long. Those measurements ruled out the narrow-platform Atlas storage lift, because he wanted the option of storing the wider car on top without the tires perched on the runway edge. That left him deciding between the two 9,000 lb models.

Runway Length And Storage Fit

Runway length on drive on auto lifts matters most for storage. If your lift’s runways are shorter than the wheelbase of the car on top, the front or rear wheels hang off the ends, which is not safe for long-term storage or for the tires themselves. The BendPak he shortlisted had 173-inch runways. The Rotary had 178-inch runways. Both worked for his coupe’s 118-inch wheelbase with more than enough front and rear tire coverage. So runway length was a tie between the two.

Where runway length breaks tie is on drive-up angles for cars with low front air dams. The Rotary offered an optional drive-over ramp accessory that we recommend for anyone storing a car with less than five inches of ground clearance at the nose. His coupe had exactly that problem — the air dam scraped on the standard approach angle without a ramp. We spec’d the Rotary with the drive-over ramp and moved on.

Rise Height For Two-Car Storage

The reason rise height matters for a collector’s setup is that he needed enough vertical clearance to park a sedan under the classic without the classic’s undercarriage resting on the sedan’s roof. Sedan roof height is typically around 58 inches. Undercarriage height on the raised classic is the lift’s rise plus the car’s own frame-to-ground dimension. On the 63-inch BendPak with a 58-inch tall sedan under it, clearance was going to be tight — maybe eight inches to the classic’s differential.

On the 71-inch Rotary, clearance grew to about sixteen inches, which is enough that the collector could walk around the lower car with a flashlight and check the classic’s undercarriage without contorting. That difference — eight versus sixteen inches — was what pushed him to the Rotary despite the higher sticker. Rise height differences on drive on auto lifts are one of the specs that matter more than they look on the sheet, and this collector’s setup made the case for the taller rise.

Platform Width And Wheel Track

Platform width on a drive-on 4-post is the outside-to-outside runway spacing. Standard drive-ons run about 82 inches outside width. Wide platforms run closer to 91 inches. The classic’s front track was 61 inches and rear track was 62 inches, both well within the standard platform. The daily’s front and rear tracks were 63 inches. Both cars fit the standard platform fine, so wide-platform wasn’t necessary. That decision saved him some money and preserved side clearance in a bay where every inch counted.

For collectors thinking about future purchases, this is the spec worth thinking hardest about. If there is any chance you’ll add a wide-body classic or a modern truck to your rotation, wide-platform pays for itself the day you buy that vehicle. If you’re locked into passenger cars, standard platform is fine. This collector was locked in, so standard won.

Certification, Warranty, And Documentation

All three shortlisted drive on auto lifts carried ALI Gold. All three came with manuals, install checklists, and factory warranties. Where they differed was warranty length and structural versus wear-item coverage. The Rotary carried a five-year structural warranty and two years on the power unit. The BendPak carried five years on the structure and one year on wear items. The Atlas carried a shorter structural warranty overall. For a collector planning to keep this lift twenty years and never resell, the longer power unit warranty on the Rotary was worth real money over ownership.

We include factory warranty registration paperwork on every install and file the warranty card with the manufacturer on the customer’s behalf when the lift energizes. That way if a claim comes up in year four, the paperwork trail is clean and the customer isn’t scrambling for a serial number they wrote on a scrap of paper somewhere.

Install Day And First Raise

Install day for this Minnesota collector took our crew about six hours from truck-in to first raise with a car on the lift. We anchored to his existing 15-year-old five-inch slab, verified anchor torque at 130 foot-pounds, ran the electrical from his existing subpanel with a new 30-amp breaker and a wall-mounted disconnect, and walked him through the safety lock sequence twice. Then we put his daily on the lift and raised it to full lock so he could see exactly how the setup would work in his shop.

Twenty minutes after we drove away, he drove the classic up the ramps and settled it on the safety locks at his preferred storage height. That is the moment that drive on auto lifts start earning their keep for collectors — the first time the car sits comfortably on the runways at a lock the owner picked.

First Annual Inspection Twelve Months Later

Twelve months in, he called us for a paid annual inspection. Our tech drove up, tested lock synchronization at three heights, checked cable tension with a torque wrench, inspected the sheaves, checked anchor torque again (all still at spec), and topped off the hydraulic reservoir with three ounces of fresh fluid. Total inspection time was about ninety minutes. He now has the annual inspection on our route rotation, which keeps the ALI paperwork current and keeps the lift on factory warranty.
