Most engine work lift selection mistakes trace back to not measuring the building first. A two-post lift raises the vehicle high enough that a standard shop crane or engine hoist arm may not clear the frame rails, especially in older pole barns or converted garages with 10 to 12-foot ceilings common across rural Iowa. Engine work lift selection has to account for the heaviest vehicle in your bay, not the average one. A lift rated at 9,000 lbs handles most cars and light trucks fine, but once you’re pulling diesel engines out of one-ton pickups, or working on fleet trucks with aftermarket bumpers and toolboxes still attached, you need real headroom in that capacity number. We always tell customers to buy for the heaviest vehicle they’ll realistically service in the next several years, not just what’s parked in the shop today.

This matters doubly for engine work because the load isn’t evenly distributed the way it is for a simple tire change — hanging a transmission jack off one side, or working an engine hoist positioned off-center, shifts weight in ways that a marginal lift wasn’t designed for. Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts, and BendPak or Atlas for home garage use, all publish capacity ratings that assume even loading; add a safety margin when engine work is part of your regular routine.
