Why European Lift Arm Selection Is Different

Most American-built two-post lifts were designed around trucks, SUVs, and sedans with generous frame rails and forgiving lift points. European cars flip that assumption on its head. Unibody construction, aerodynamic underbody paneling, low ground clearance, and sensitive rocker panel pinch welds mean the arm has to reach farther, sit lower, and terminate in a pad that matches a much smaller, more specific contact zone. This is exactly why european lift arm selection deserves its own conversation rather than being treated as a footnote to a standard lift purchase.

We’ve walked into shops running general-purpose arms on European-heavy bays and watched technicians spend five extra minutes per vehicle just finding a safe spot to set the pad. Multiply that across a day of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes work and you’ve lost real productivity. The right arm configuration eliminates that guesswork. It’s not about buying a fancier lift — it’s about matching arm length, pad style, and reach to the vehicles that actually roll through your bay every day.

Short vs. Long Arm Geometry

That geometry lines up much better with German and Swedish sedans than a generic symmetric arm set. Pad Adapters Matter As Much As the Arm Itself

Even with correct arm reach, the wrong pad adapter undoes all of it. European vehicles frequently need low-profile screw pads, extended rubber blocks, or frame-specific adapters that seat into the reinforced pinch weld area without contacting the rocker panel’s cosmetic trim. Full-size European SUVs and performance sedans with all-wheel-drive hardware can weigh more than shop staff expect, and that number needs to be checked against the lift’s rated capacity before arm selection even enters the conversation. We always tell customers to nail down capacity first, then move to arm configuration and pad choice as the second and third steps.

Once capacity is confirmed, we look at how weight distributes across the vehicle, since some European models carry more weight toward the rear or front axle than a typical domestic vehicle. That distribution affects how much stress each arm sees during a lift cycle, which is one more reason to match arm reach and pad placement carefully rather than defaulting to whatever configuration shipped with the lift originally.

Retrofitting Arms on an Existing Lift

You don’t always need a brand-new lift to fix a European fitment problem.
