This is exactly the situation where a dedicated adapter, rather than a universal pad, earns its keep — the right adapter is often shaped and positioned to naturally guide the arm into the correct zone, reducing the chance of a tech misjudging the spot under time pressure.

Choosing the Right Adapter Style

Puck-style adapters with reinforced tops work well for vehicles with recessed rocker points, giving extra height so the frame rail clears the arm before contact. Many shops end up running both — a four-post for routine work and a properly adapted two-post for anything deeper.

The single biggest mistake is reusing old adapters from gas-vehicle work without checking height and placement against the EV’s specific lift points. Adapters that sat flush on a Fusion won’t necessarily sit flush on a Mach-E, and the few millimeters of difference matter when a battery enclosure is involved. Another common issue is rushing the positioning step — EVs are quieter and give less audible feedback than a running engine bay, so techs sometimes skip the careful double-check they’d normally do out of habit.

We also see shops using worn or cracked adapters on EVs that they’d tolerated on lighter vehicles for years. Given the added weight EVs carry, adapter condition matters more, not less. If a pad is compressed, chipped, or uneven, it needs to be replaced before it goes under an EV, not after a slip.
