Why EVs broke the old lift-capacity rules of thumb

For years shops sized lifts by vehicle class: passenger car = 9K to 10K, light truck = 10K to 12K, work truck = 15K and up. That math no longer holds. A Ford F-150 Lightning weighs around 6,500 pounds — roughly 1,600 pounds more than the equivalent gas F-150. A Rivian R1T pushes 7,100 pounds curb weight. A Hummer EV crosses 9,000 pounds by itself before you add cargo. When a shop plans an ev lift for a bay that previously handled the internal-combustion version of the same nameplate, the capacity ceiling has to jump one full class.

We tell every Iowa shop owner the same thing: if you are buying today and expect to lift EV trucks at any point in the next decade, size to 15,000 lb capacity minimum. A 12,000 lb 2-post that used to handle every passenger vehicle in your bay now leaves an ev lift customer standing on the sidewalk when a Lightning pulls up.

Jacking-point geometry on EV chassis

The bigger surprise for most shops is not weight — it is where the manufacturer allows you to lift the vehicle. EVs house their batteries in a slab across the floor between the axles. The traditional pinch-weld lift points that a legacy asymmetric 2-post targets are often either unusable (right on top of battery cell modules) or moved several inches inward toward the centerline. Tesla’s approved lift points on a Model Y sit far enough inboard that some older 2-post arm swing ranges cannot reach them safely.

An ev lift install today needs adapter pads matched to the vehicle line. We stock the Tesla, Rivian, Lightning, and IONIQ adapter kits and include them as a package with new commercial 2-posts going into Iowa dealerships. If you are retrofitting an older Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10 bay, we can supply the pad kits without replacing the lift — as long as the weight envelope still works. 2-post vs 4-post for EV service work

For a general-service EV bay, the 2-post lift is still the workhorse. It gives full underbody access for suspension, high-voltage service loops, and cooling system work. What changes is the arm design — asymmetric arms with three-stage telescoping are the standard for reaching inboard EV lift points cleanly. For alignment and tire work on EVs, a scissor or 4-post rack with rolling jacks (rated to lift a battery-heavy chassis by the axle) is often the better choice.

We have installed both configurations across the Des Moines metro over the past few years. A local Ford dealership went with a mix of 15K 2-posts for service and a 14K flush scissor for alignment. An independent shop in Ankeny running a mostly Tesla and Chevy Bolt customer base opted for pure 2-posts at 12K. Both configurations work — the choice depends on your service mix. Battery-drop equipment and why it belongs on the roadmap

A high-voltage battery pack on a modern EV weighs 900 to 1,800 pounds. When cells fail or coolant plumbing needs service, the pack has to come out — usually from underneath. A standard shop transmission jack does not have the deck size or the capacity for this. Dedicated battery-drop tables with 2,000 lb ratings, large support decks, and hydraulic lift assistance are the right tool.

We stock battery-drop equipment across the major brands and configure it against the lift height of whatever ev lift is going in the bay next to it. The math is simple: your 2-post has to lift the vehicle high enough that a fully loaded battery table can roll underneath and receive the pack. On a 12,000 lb 2-post with 79 inches of rise, that clearance is workable for most current EVs. On a 15K commercial lift with 82+ inches of rise, it is comfortable. Concrete and power requirements for an EV service bay

Heavier vehicles change concrete requirements slightly, though not as dramatically as some marketing suggests. A 15K 2-post still calls for a minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete under each column footprint. What changes more with EV work is the power infrastructure — you likely also want a 240V or three-phase circuit for EV charging equipment in or near the bay, which needs to be planned when the lift install trench work is open anyway.

We have seen too many jobs where the lift install and the EV service equipment install got scheduled separately and ended up double-cutting the same concrete. Brands we recommend for EV-capable service bays

For commercial shops we stay with Rotary and Challenger for new equipment. Rotary’s SPO15 and SPOA15 2-post families and Challenger’s CL15 and E15 platforms are all built for the loads a modern ev lift bay sees. For the mid-rise scissor and flush-mount slot, Rotary’s X14 flush scissor is our default recommendation across Iowa dealerships that need alignment-ready EV service. For heavy-duty EV trucks (F-150 Lightning, Silverado EV work truck variants, Hummer EV), we spec 18K commercial 2-posts or PKS heavy-duty lifts as appropriate.

Home-garage EV owners are a different conversation. A 10K BendPak or Atlas 4-post handles a Tesla Model Y or Ford Lightning at home just fine for occasional detail and maintenance work.
