A shop that’s run gas-engine sedans and pickups across the same two-post lift for fifteen years suddenly rolls a Tesla, an F-150 Lightning, or a Chevy Bolt onto the bay floor and realizes the old equipment wasn’t built for it. Why EV Lift Selection Isn’t the Same as a Standard Vehicle Lift

The biggest mistake we see in EV lift selection is shops assuming tonnage is the only number that matters. Yes, weight capacity matters, and it matters more than it used to, since a full-size electric pickup with its battery pack can run well past the curb weight of a comparable gas truck. But weight alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Battery packs are usually mounted low and flat across the entire underbody, which changes where a technician can safely place lift arms and pads. On a lot of EVs, the factory lift points sit outside the battery enclosure specifically so shops don’t crush a pack worth more than the rest of the car.

That means EV lift selection is really a two-part decision: does the lift have the rated capacity, and does the arm geometry and reach actually let you land pads on the real lift points without guessing. We’ve walked shops through both halves of that decision more than once, and the shops that skip the second half are the ones calling us six months later about a cracked rocker panel or a battery warning light that wasn’t there before the vehicle went up in the air.

Two-Post vs. Four-Post: Picking the Right Lift Type for EVs

For most independent shops doing EV service work, a two-post lift with adjustable arms and enough reach to clear a wide battery pack is still the right call, especially for brake jobs, suspension work, and anything requiring the wheels to hang free. Rotary and Challenger two-post lifts in higher capacity ranges give techs the arm length and swing needed to find factory lift points on longer wheelbase EVs without fighting the arms into position.

Four-post lifts earn their place when a shop is doing more alignment work, storage, or servicing EVs alongside heavier fleet vehicles where drive-on convenience matters more than underbody access. The tradeoff is that a standard four-post platform doesn’t give you the same clear shot at the battery pack for pack-out service, so shops that expect to do real EV battery work should lean toward a two-post setup or a four-post with a rolling jack bridge. Either way, this is a core part of EV lift selection that shouldn’t get decided by whatever lift happens to be sitting open in the bay that week.

Weight Capacity Isn’t Just About the Sticker Number

A lift rated for a given tonnage on paper can still be the wrong choice once you factor in real-world EV weight distribution. Electric trucks and SUVs often carry sixty percent or more of their total weight low in the chassis, which changes the load dynamics on lift arms compared to a traditionally balanced gas vehicle. This is one of the quieter parts of EV lift selection that catches experienced techs off guard, because they’re used to eyeballing balance points from decades of gas-engine work.

Our rule of thumb: if a shop is regularly lifting full-size electric trucks or SUVs, we push them toward the next capacity tier up from what they’d normally choose for a comparable gas vehicle, not because the lift will fail at rated capacity, but because the margin for arm positioning error shrinks. A 10,000 or 12,000 lb two-post platform gives more forgiving geometry than trying to stretch a 9,000 lb lift to its limit on every EV that rolls in. That buffer matters more in EV lift selection than it ever did with conventional vehicles.

Pad Placement and Adapters Built for Battery Packs

Even with the right lift, pad placement is where most EV lift jobs go wrong. Factory lift points on electric vehicles are often narrower or positioned differently than the flat pinch-weld runs techs are used to, and using the wrong pad height or the wrong adapter risks contact with the battery enclosure itself. We’ve had Iowa shops call us specifically because a stock rubber pad was too tall and forced arm angles that put pressure on the pack edge.

Part of doing EV lift selection properly means budgeting for the right adapters and pad kits alongside the lift itself, not treating them as an afterthought. What This Means for Multi-Brand Shops

Most Iowa shops aren’t exclusively servicing EVs — they’re running a mixed bay of gas trucks, SUVs, and now a growing slice of electric and hybrid work. That mix is exactly why EV lift selection should be viewed as an equipment strategy question, not a one-off purchase. A shop that buys a single lift optimized only for EVs may find it awkward for standard trucks, while a shop that ignores EV needs entirely will eventually turn away work or take on risk it doesn’t need to.

The better approach is choosing a lift platform with enough arm reach, capacity headroom, and adapter flexibility to handle both worlds well.
