Start With the Heaviest Thing You’ll Ever Lift
Every bad lift purchase we’ve been called out to fix started with somebody sizing for the car in the driveway instead of the truck in the field. A crew-cab one-ton with a service body and a full fuel transfer tank is pushing 9,000 to 10,000 pounds before you hook a trailer to it. A loaded flatbed dually with a bale spear is heavier than most people guess. Then there’s the tandem grain truck, the anhydrous tender, the skid loader that lives in the corner of the shed. Capacity ratings on a lift are total, not per-arm, and running a lift at 95 percent of rating every time is how you shorten cable life and cook a power unit.
Our rule of thumb for Iowa farm shops: write down the three heaviest vehicles you own, add 20 percent, and buy above that number. In practice that pushes most operations out of the 9,000 lb hobbyist range and into a 12,000 lb two-post or a 14,000 lb four-post. Ceiling Height Decides More Than Your Budget Does
Machine sheds tease you. You look up at a 16-foot peak and assume you’ve got room for anything, then we show up and the actual clear height at the lift location — under a truss web, under a light, under the sprinkler line — is 11 feet 4 inches. Overhead-beam two-post lifts need real clearance: the beam sits at roughly 12 feet on most 10,000 to 12,000 lb models, and then you’re raising a pickup cab under it. Baseplate two-post designs move that structure to the floor and buy you back a couple feet of headroom, which is why we install a lot of them in older 12- and 14-foot sheds.
Measure at the exact spot the lift will sit, not at the ridge. Note purlin depth, condition of the wiring, and anything hanging — heaters hang low in Iowa shops for a reason, and moving a hanging furnace is a real line item. If your clear height is under about 11 feet, a four-post with drive-on ramps or a mid-rise scissor lift becomes the realistic answer, and honestly a four-post is a better fit for a lot of farms anyway: you drive on, no arm setting, and you can park a second vehicle underneath during the off-season. Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
This is where more farm installs stall than any other single item. A two-post lift anchors into the slab, and manufacturers specify a minimum — typically 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with reinforcement and no cracks or expansion joints inside the anchor pattern. A lot of machine sheds got a 4-inch slab poured over dirt in 1978 with no rebar and a control joint right where you’d want to stand a column. We test-drill before we quote when there’s any doubt, and we’d rather find the problem with a bit than with a loaded truck twelve feet in the air.
The fix is usually not as bad as farmers fear. Cutting out and pouring two footing pads — roughly 4 by 4 feet, 12 inches deep, tied in — costs far less than repouring a whole shed floor and gets you a code-legal anchor base. If pouring isn’t in the cards this year, a four-post lift spreads load across four base plates and generally doesn’t require anchoring in the same way, and mobile columns don’t touch the slab at all beyond needing it flat and sound. Power, Air, and Winter Realities in a Pole Barn
Most lifts we set in farm shops run a 208/230V single-phase power unit — that’s a 20 to 30 amp dedicated circuit, and it needs to be a dedicated one. Running a lift motor off the same circuit as a welder and a compressor is a good way to trip breakers mid-lift and burn out a contactor. Three-phase exists in some larger ag operations and it’s fine, but single-phase is what we wire nine times out of ten. Plan on a licensed electrician pulling a proper circuit to the column location before install day; it’s the item most likely to delay a job.
Cold is the other farm-specific factor. An unheated shed in February will thicken hydraulic fluid enough that the lift feels sluggish on the first cycle — that’s normal, and cycling it empty once warms things up. Where cold actually causes damage is condensation in air lines feeding the lock releases on a two-post: water freezes in the line, locks won’t release, and somebody starts hammering on things. A water separator and a drain habit fixes it. We also spec galvanized or coated hardware more often in farm buildings than in climate-controlled dealership bays, because ag chemicals, fertilizer dust, and livestock ammonia are brutally hard on bare steel.
Two-Post vs. Four-Post vs. Mobile Columns for Ag Work
The honest answer is that it depends on what percentage of your work is wheels-free. If you’re pulling wheels, doing brakes, and working suspension on pickups, a two-post gives you open access and it’s the cheaper of the two fixed styles. If most of your work is oil changes, driveline, transmission, hydraulic lines, and general under-machine wrenching — plus you want winter storage for a second vehicle — a four-post wins on convenience and on the concrete question. Mobile column lifts are the option farmers underestimate. Four columns, wireless, rolling on the shed floor, lifting a tandem truck or an equipment trailer that no fixed lift in that building could touch. They’re the biggest investment of the three, but for an operation that services its own semis and grain trucks, they replace a trip to a commercial shop every time. Brands We Stand Behind and Why
We only sell and install equipment we’re willing to drive back out and service. On the commercial and heavy-duty side that’s Rotary and Challenger — Rotary two-post lifts like the SPO12 have been in Iowa farm shops for decades and parts are still available, which matters enormously when you’re twenty years into ownership. Installation, Inspection, and What to Budget For
Plan for the full picture, not just the lift price. A typical farm shop install includes freight to a rural address — which sometimes means a semi that can’t get down your lane, so we talk about drop points and forklift access ahead of time — plus the install labor, anchors, an electrical circuit, and possibly concrete work. Installs generally run a day for a two-post or four-post with two techs, longer if we’re coring footings. After that, annual inspection is the item people skip. We check cable tension and fraying, lock engagement at every position, anchor torque, cylinder seals, and hose condition.
