Twelve months ago, a Cedar Falls collector called us about squeezing a forward 2 post car lift into a detached garage that had never held anything more complex than a riding mower and a couple of stored vehicles. He wanted to do his own brake service and rotor swaps on the cars he’d spent years collecting, rather than trailering them into town every time a rotor needed resurfacing. Month One: Sequencing the Garage Build Before the Lift Shows Up

The biggest mistake collectors make is ordering the lift first and figuring out the garage second. We sat down with him before anything was purchased and mapped out the sequence: concrete first, electrical rough-in second, lighting and storage third, and the lift installed last once everything else was in place and dust-free. His garage had a slab poured for light-duty storage, not for a two post lift’s concentrated column loads, so the first month was entirely about getting new concrete down at the right thickness and cure time before we’d even talk delivery dates.

We also used that first month to finalize the arm and capacity spec. Because his collection ranged from a lighter classic coupe up to a heavier restomod project, we specced a forward 2 post car lift with enough capacity headroom to handle the heaviest car in his rotation, plus telescoping arms that could adjust down for the lighter, lower classics. Once the new slab had cured, we brought in his electrician to run a dedicated 220V circuit to the spot we’d marked out during the layout walk-through. This is a conversation we have with almost every residential and small commercial customer, because a lot of people assume a garage lift runs on standard household power and it simply doesn’t for most commercial-grade units. Getting the circuit sized and routed correctly in month two meant the power unit could be mounted and tested well before delivery day, instead of holding up the whole install waiting on an electrician’s schedule.

We also finalized exact column placement relative to his garage door track and his workbench along the back wall. For a collector doing brake service and rotor swaps, the goal is enough clearance on both sides of the vehicle to roll a parts cart and a lift table around comfortably. We measured his most-used tools and mapped the swing radius before finalizing where each column would anchor, which paid off the very first week he started working under a raised vehicle.

Month Three: Install Day and the First Walk-Around

Delivery and install took the better part of a day once the site prep was finished, which is typical for a forward 2 post car lift going into a properly prepared garage. Our crew anchored the columns, ran the hydraulic lines, mounted the power unit, and walked him through the safety release and locking mechanisms before we left. We always insist on a full walk-around with a customer’s own vehicle on the lift before we consider the job done, raising and lowering it several times so he could get comfortable with arm positioning and the sound the unit makes under normal operation.

That first walk-around also let us fine-tune arm pad height for his specific pinch weld locations, something that varies a surprising amount between a vintage coupe and a modern restomod. We adjusted pad height, confirmed even contact on all four arms, and only signed off once the vehicle sat level and secure through a full raise-and-lower cycle. This is a step some installers skip, and it’s exactly where problems show up months later if it’s rushed.

Months Four Through Six: Learning the Lift Through Routine Maintenance

The next few months were about building comfort, not doing anything dramatic. He started with light maintenance tasks, oil changes and inspections, getting a feel for how the arms swing, how the locks engage, and how the lift behaves with different vehicles in his collection sitting up at full height. This is the phase we recommend every new owner go through before jumping into heavier brake service and rotor swaps, because confidence with the equipment matters just as much as mechanical skill once a car is six feet off the ground.

By month five he’d developed his own routine: check the arm locks, verify the vehicle is centered, raise it in stages rather than straight to full height, and always double-check contact points before climbing under. We checked in periodically during this stretch, mostly by phone, answering small questions about lubrication points and safety lock engagement rather than making return trips to the garage. Month Seven: The First Real Brake Job and Rotor Swap

Seven months in, he tackled his first full brake service and rotor swap on his own, on one of the heavier cars in the collection. Having the vehicle at chest height with both arms locked made the job dramatically easier than the floor-jack-and-jack-stand approach he’d used for years, and he told us afterward it took roughly half the time he expected once the wheels were off and the calipers were hanging free on his own tool hooks.
