Myth: Cables Only Need Attention When They Look Frayed

This is the myth that causes the most damage in shops we service. By the time a cable shows visible fraying on the outside, the internal strands have often already failed at a much higher rate than what’s visible, because cable wear frequently starts at the sheave contact points and inside the cable jacket where you can’t see it. Myth: A Lift That Passed Inspection Last Year Is Fine to Skip This Year

Annual inspections are valuable, but treating a passed inspection as a green light to ignore cables for the next twelve months is a mistake we see specifically in busy specialty shops where the lift almost never sits idle. Lower-volume shops can extend the professional inspection to annually, but the monthly hands-on check should still happen regardless of volume.

Document every inspection with date and findings, even when nothing is found, because that log becomes valuable when you’re deciding whether a cable’s wear rate is accelerating or holding steady over time. Shops that skip documentation tend to underestimate how quickly a cable degraded once a problem is finally found, because there’s no baseline to compare against. A simple spreadsheet or even a clipboard by the lift is enough — the goal is consistency, not complexity.

Why Oil Pan Work Specifically Stresses Cables

Engine oil pan gasket work on European vehicles often requires holding the vehicle at a specific working height for longer stretches than a typical brake job or tire rotation, sometimes with the lift sitting mid-cycle while a technician double-checks torque specs or waits on a part. A forward 2 post car lift under sustained load at a fixed height puts continuous tension on the cables and their anchor points rather than the brief load spikes of a quick in-and-out service, and that sustained tension is a different kind of stress than repeated short cycles.

We also see European-marque shops position vehicles asymmetrically more often than general repair shops, because oil pan and gasket access points aren’t always centered on the vehicle’s underside. That means one side of the lift’s cable system may be under more consistent load during pan work specifically, reinforcing why side-by-side wear comparison matters so much for this type of shop. If your shop does a high volume of pan and gasket work, factor that use pattern into your inspection schedule rather than using a generic interval borrowed from a general repair shop’s manual.
