A baseplate configuration runs everything through a plate bolted to the floor, with no overhead structure at all — better for shops with lower ceilings, but it does put a raised plate at floor level connecting the two posts, which some techs find awkward to work around during differential service.

For body shops specifically, the ceiling question often gets decided by whatever frame rack or paint booth is already installed nearby. If you’ve got a booth with a lower clearance zone bumping up against your prospective lift bay, baseplate is frequently the only real option. If your bay has open ceiling height, overhead gives you a completely unobstructed floor, which matters when you’re rolling a vehicle in with a damaged bumper or fender and don’t want to worry about a plate catching on anything.

Differential Service: Access Realities on Each Configuration

Differential fluid service means getting underneath with a fluid pump, drain pan, and sometimes a torque wrench for the fill plug, all while the vehicle sits at a comfortable working height. Overhead units concentrate stress at the two post bases and the overhead beam connection, while baseplate units spread some of that load across the plate itself.
