Measuring the Bay Before You Choose a Forward Car Lift

Most family garages we work with in the Urbandale area were built decades before anyone imagined a full-size pickup or a lifted SUV rolling through the door. Before you even look at brochures, we measure ceiling height at the actual post locations (not just the center of the bay), door swing clearance, and the distance between support columns. We also check floor thickness and rebar placement with a scan before pouring any new anchors. A slab that was fine for a 1960s sedan lift often isn’t rated for a modern 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb capacity forward car lift without a poured pad or reinforced footing. This is the step families skip most often because grandpa’s lift was is bolted straight into original 4-inch slab — and that’s exactly why we walk every third-generation shop through a slab evaluation before quoting equipment, not after.

Sequencing the Install Around an Operating Business

A family garage rarely has the luxury of shutting down for a week. We sequence forward car lift installs in stages so the shop keeps working: demo and disposal of the old unit first, concrete work and cure time second (this is the stage that can’t be rushed — a minimum 72-hour cure under normal conditions), then equipment set, hydraulic hookup, and calibration last. We schedule the concrete phase around slower days so a bay is down for cure time, not for the whole install.

For shops running two or more lifts, we stagger the work bay by bay so at least one lift stays operational at all times. This matters most for family shops where the same three or four techs handle everything from oil changes to alignments — losing all lift capacity for a week can mean losing customers to the shop down the road. We’ve run this staged sequencing across dozens of central Iowa garages and it’s the difference between an install that disrupts revenue and one that barely gets noticed by regular customers.

Overhead vs Baseplate Clearance for Older Buildings

Family garages built before modern lift standards often have lower trusses or HVAC ductwork running exactly where an overhead-style two-post unit needs clearance. In these cases, a baseplate configuration frequently makes more sense — the hydraulic and cable routing stays low, and you’re not fighting a header beam that’s twelve inches lower than you’d like. We’ve swapped more than one Urbandale-area shop from a planned overhead unit to baseplate purely because of a truss the original 1980s blueprints didn’t show accurately.

That said, overhead configurations still win for shops doing heavier truck and van work, since the top beam keeps the runway clear for full-length undercarriage access without a crossbar at ankle height. The right call depends on your ceiling, your vehicle mix, and honestly your techs’ preference — some crews just work faster without a beam overhead. We walk through both configurations on-site with actual tape measurements before locking in a spec, because guessing from a spec sheet alone is how shops end up with equipment that technically fits but never feels right to use every day.

Real Dimensions That Matter for a Two-Bay Family Shop

For a typical two-bay family garage, we’re usually working with 24 to 26 feet of width per bay and 40 to 45 feet of depth. A forward car lift footprint — post spacing plus swing arm reach — typically needs 10 to 11 feet of width between posts to service a full-size truck comfortably, plus another 3 feet of clearance on each side for door swing and tech movement. Run the math on a 24-foot bay and you’ll see why post placement precision matters down to the inch, not the foot.

Column spacing also dictates whether you can run a second lift down the same bay line or need to offset it. We’ve drawn full CAD-style layouts for family shops showing exactly where each post lands relative to existing floor drains, air lines, and electrical drops — because moving a floor drain after the concrete’s poured is a conversation nobody wants to have. Getting these dimensions locked before ordering saves weeks of delay if equipment shows up and doesn’t match the bay.

Choosing Capacity for a Multi-Generation Vehicle Mix

Family shops tend to see everything — a grandmother’s sedan on Monday, a contractor’s dually on Tuesday. This vehicle mix is exactly why we push most Urbandale-area family garages toward a 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity forward car lift rather than the lighter 9,000 lb units that were standard a generation ago. Trucks and SUVs have gotten heavier, and undersizing capacity is the single most common regret we hear from shops that replaced old equipment with something too close to their old rating.

Anchoring, Electrical, and the Details Nobody Budgets For

Anchoring is where slab age catches up with a lot of family garages. Older bays often have inconsistent slab depth from patch jobs done over decades, and we’ve found voids under supposedly solid concrete more than once during a pre-install scan. A forward car lift depends on proper anchor embedment for safe operation, so we treat this scan as non-negotiable, not an upsell — nobody wants a callback because an anchor pulled loose six months in.

Electrical is the other line item that surprises family shop owners. Many older buildings were wired for lighting and small tools, not for hydraulic power units drawing real amperage on startup. We check panel capacity and run dedicated circuits where needed as part of the install quote, because finding out mid-install that the panel’s maxed out turns a two-day job into a two-week job waiting on an electrician.

What a Family Shop Should Ask Before Signing a Quote

Every family-owned garage we’ve worked with in the Urbandale area asks some version of the same question: will this equipment outlast me the way the old one outlasted my dad? We tell every owner the same thing — ask about warranty terms on cylinders and cables specifically, since those are the parts that wear first, and ask whether the installer stocks replacement parts locally or ships from out of state when something needs service.

We also recommend asking any installer to walk the actual bay in person before quoting, not just review photos or a floor plan sent by email. A forward car lift quoted off a floor plan alone misses the truss height, the floor drain location, and the panel capacity that only show up on a walkthrough. Any shop that skips that step is guessing, and guessing on equipment that’s bolted into concrete for the next fifteen years isn’t a risk a family business should take on someone else’s behalf.
