A forward car lift is only as good as the garage it goes into, and that became the whole story on a recent job outside Waukee. A local off-road and overlanding builder called us because his shop was doing more suspension and shock work than ever, and his old jack-and-stands setup was slowing every job down and beating up his back. He wanted a two-post lift that could handle lifted trucks with oversized tires, but before we quoted anything, we had to measure his ceiling, his door, and his overhead obstructions. Why Ceiling Height Made or Broke This Forward Car Lift Install

The Waukee shop had roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling height, which sounds like plenty until you start stacking a raised vehicle on top of a fully extended lift. Most two-post forward car lift models need the vehicle raised high enough for a technician to stand comfortably underneath, and when you’re working on lifted off-road trucks that already sit taller than stock, that math gets tight fast. We measured from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, including a support beam and a section of ductwork the shop owner had forgotten about, and used that number to pick a lift with a shorter overall column height without sacrificing lifting capacity.

This is the step so many shops skip, and it’s why we always push for a site survey before quoting a forward car lift instead of just emailing a spec sheet. A lift that works fine in a shop with 14-foot ceilings can be a poor fit in a building with 11 or 12, and no amount of wishing changes the math. For this build, we landed on a lift with a lower overhead profile so a lifted truck with 33-inch tires could still clear the arms and columns at full rise, giving the technicians room to work suspension and shocks without ducking or repositioning constantly.

Door Swing and Drive-In Clearance

The second issue was the bay door itself. The shop’s overhead door opening was narrower than ideal for the wider stance of the trucks coming in for lift kits and shock upgrades, and the door track ran close enough to where the lift columns needed to sit that we had to shift the whole footprint six inches off our original plan. Getting this wrong means either a lift that can’t clear the door track when it’s open, or columns positioned so tight to the door that techs can’t walk the perimeter of the vehicle safely.

We walked the shop owner through drive-in and drive-out clearance with the door fully open, accounting for mirror width and any aftermarket bumpers or winches mounted on the trucks he typically services. Overlanding builds often carry roof racks, awnings, and bull bars that add length and height most stock spec sheets don’t account for. Planning the forward car lift placement around the actual vehicles rolling through the door, not generic sedan dimensions, is what kept this install from becoming a daily headache.

Choosing the Right Lift for Suspension and Shock Work

Suspension and shock replacement is hard on a lift because technicians spend long stretches with wheels hanging free, arms extended, and weight shifted unevenly compared to a simple oil change. We recommended a two-post arrangement with a strong load rating margin above the shop’s heaviest lifted truck, because working suspension components under a vehicle that’s near a lift’s rated capacity is not where you want to find out the margin was too thin. Iowa winters also mean undercarriage corrosion work is common, so we specced arms and pads that hold up to grime and road salt residue without seizing.

The shop owner also wanted flexibility for different truck widths, since overlanding builds range from stock-width pickups to significantly widened off-road platforms. We walked him through arm reach and swing clearance so he wasn’t locked into servicing only one body style. That flexibility matters more in a specialty shop than in a general repair bay, because the whole point of the business is handling unusual builds other shops turn away.

Coordinating the Install Around an Active Shop

This shop was already running jobs, so shutting the whole bay down for a lengthy install wasn’t an option. We scheduled the forward car lift installation for a slower week and staged the equipment so the bay was only fully unusable for a day and a half. Anchoring into the shop’s existing slab required us to check the concrete thickness and rebar placement before drilling, since a lift only holds its rating if the anchors are set into concrete that can actually support the load.

We also ran the electrical and air line hookups during the same visit so the owner wasn’t waiting on a second appointment to get the lift operational. For a working shop, downtime is money, and coordinating mechanical, electrical, and concrete work into one trip is something we plan for on every commercial forward car lift install, not just this one.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Considering a Similar Setup

If you’re running an off-road or overlanding build shop anywhere in Iowa and you’re still working suspension and shocks on jack stands, the ceiling height and door swing conversation needs to happen before you pick a model, not after. We’ve seen shops order a lift online based on price alone and then discover it doesn’t clear their door track or their ceiling beams, which turns into an expensive return and a delayed install. A quick phone call or site visit up front saves that entire mess.

We also tell shop owners to think about future vehicles, not just the fleet they service today. If your business is growing and you expect taller trucks or wider builds down the road, it’s worth sizing the lift with a little headroom for that instead of matching it exactly to today’s needs. That approach paid off for the Waukee shop, which has already picked up bigger truck builds since the install went in.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care for a Shop Lift

Once a forward car lift is in and running, the work isn’t over. We set the Waukee shop up on a maintenance routine that covers arm pin inspection, cable or hydraulic line checks, and anchor bolt torque verification on a regular schedule. Shops doing heavy suspension work put more stress on arm restraints and locking mechanisms than a typical oil-change bay, so we adjusted the inspection interval accordingly.

We also talked through the parts most likely to need replacement over the next few years, including hydraulic seals, safety locks, and cable assemblies, so the owner isn’t caught off guard by a slow leak or a worn part mid-job. Keeping a small stock of common wear parts on hand, or knowing exactly who to call for fast fulfillment, is part of what makes a lift investment pay off over its full service life rather than becoming a maintenance headache in year three.

Getting Your Own Site Survey Done Right

Every shop’s building is different, and that’s really the takeaway from this whole case study. Ceiling height, door swing, floor slab condition, and the specific vehicles you service all factor into which forward car lift actually fits your space, and no two Iowa shops we’ve measured have had identical numbers. Skipping this step to save a week of lead time almost always costs more time later when something doesn’t fit.
