For a dealership bay with 12 to 14 foot ceilings, overhead often isn’t even an option — you simply don’t have the clearance, and the decision gets made for you. But in a taller shop, the choice becomes real. Overhead versions tend to run a little less expensive because the structure requires less concrete engineering, and they hold alignment extremely well over years of heavy cycling. Baseplate versions clear your ceiling concerns entirely and give techs an unobstructed view straight up into the engine bay and undercarriage, which matters directly for the oil pan work we’re talking about here.

Oil Pan Gasket Work Specifically Favors Unobstructed Overhead Access

When a tech is chasing an oil pan gasket leak on a dealership floor, they’re not just dropping the pan — they’re often working with a light, checking for secondary leaks at the timing cover or valve cover, and needing to see the full underside clearly from multiple angles. An overhead beam sitting right above the engine bay becomes an obstruction for exactly that kind of work. It’s not a dealbreaker, but techs notice it, and they’ll tell you.

A baseplate forward car lift removes that beam entirely and gives your tech a completely open column of space from the pan up through the hood line. For a high-volume dealership doing pan gasket work as routine maintenance rather than an occasional repair, that unobstructed sightline saves real minutes per job, and minutes compound fast across a service department doing dozens of these a week.
