Fleet shops rarely need the same lift twice. A crew running mostly half-ton pickups has different runway and capacity needs than one servicing 12,000-pound box trucks, and picking the wrong spec means either an undersized lift straining every day or an oversized one eating floor space you don’t have. Configuration A: 10,000-Pound, Standard Runway

The baseline configuration most fleet shops start with is a 10,000-pound capacity forward four post lift with standard-length runways, usually somewhere around 18 to 20 feet. This setup comfortably handles half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, cutaway vans, and most SUVs a mixed fleet runs day to day. For wheel bearing service specifically, the runway length matters less than having good approach ramps and a stable platform, since you’re often pulling wheels off entirely rather than driving on and off repeatedly.

The tradeoff with this configuration is capacity ceiling. If your fleet occasionally rotates in a one-ton dually or a lighter box truck, 10,000 pounds gets tight fast once you account for tool trays, jack accessories, and uneven load distribution. We generally recommend this configuration only when a fleet manager can say with confidence that nothing heavier than a three-quarter-ton will ever sit on it — and in a mixed Davenport fleet, that’s not always a safe bet.

Configuration B: 14,000-Pound, Extended Runway

The second configuration we walk fleet operators through is a 14,000-pound forward four post lift with extended runways, often 24 feet or longer, built for box trucks, larger cutaways, and heavier one-ton service work. This is the configuration we hear requested most often once a fleet manager has actually measured their heaviest vehicle and realized the buffer at 10,000 pounds is thinner than expected. The extended runway also gives techs more room to work around the vehicle during wheel bearing service, particularly on longer wheelbase trucks where a standard runway leaves the front or rear axle hanging past the platform edge.

The cost of stepping up is upfront price and a slightly larger footprint, which matters if your Davenport bay is already tight. But we’ve rarely had a fleet operator regret sizing up once they’re using the lift daily — undersizing a forward four post lift is a far more common complaint than oversizing one. If there’s any real chance your fleet mix grows heavier over the next few years, this is the safer long-term configuration.

Rolling Jacks and Casters: Do You Need Them

Both configurations can be ordered with optional rolling jacks or casters that let you reposition the lift within a bay, or lift a vehicle’s tires independently for bearing and brake work without needing a separate floor jack. For wheel bearing service specifically, a rolling jack that travels the runway is genuinely useful — it lets a tech raise one end of the vehicle, pull the wheel, and work without fighting a jack stand at an odd angle underneath a lifted forward four post lift platform.

Casters under the lift’s base itself are a different feature, letting you drag the entire unit across the floor before you’ve committed to a permanent bolt-down location. Fleet shops setting up a new bay from scratch often like this option because it lets them test traffic flow for a week or two before finalizing anchor points. Neither option is required, and both add cost, so we usually recommend rolling jacks for shops doing heavy bearing and brake work, and casters mainly for shops still finalizing their floor plan.

Overhead Clearance and Bay Height

One spec that trips up more fleet shops than capacity does is overhead clearance. A forward four post lift with its safety locks engaged at full height can require 14 to 16 feet of clear ceiling space depending on model and vehicle height, and box trucks or high-roof cutaways eat into that clearance fast. Before finalizing either configuration, we always ask for actual measured ceiling height in the bay, not an estimate, along with the tallest vehicle height in the fleet.

We’ve had Davenport shops discover mid-install that a lift they’d already ordered wouldn’t clear a specific van model at full lift height, which forces either a shorter lift height setting or a different bay assignment for that vehicle. Measuring first avoids that entirely, and it’s a five-minute check compared to weeks of delay reordering equipment.

Hydraulic Power Unit and Cycle Time

Both the 10,000-pound and 14,000-pound configurations we’re comparing typically use a single hydraulic power unit synchronized across all four posts, but cycle time — how long it takes to raise or lower a full load — varies by pump size and motor horsepower. For a fleet shop running multiple wheel bearing jobs a day, a faster cycle time adds up to real productivity over a week, while a shop doing one or two vehicles a day may not notice the difference.

If your Davenport bay is running high volume, ask specifically about pump GPM and motor horsepower when comparing configurations rather than assuming all forward four post lift models cycle at the same speed. It’s a small spec sheet detail that gets overlooked next to capacity and runway length, but it’s one of the biggest factors in daily throughput for a busy fleet bay.

Making the Final Call for Your Fleet
