A four-post platform doesn’t rely on the cylinder to hold weight the way a two-post lift’s arms do — the runways sit on the frame, and a set of safety locks or lock pins usually catches the load once you’re at height. But the cylinder is still what gets you there smoothly, and it’s what keeps the platform from sagging or chattering during the climb. On a forward lift 4 post, the single center cylinder (or, on some models, twin cylinders under each runway) pushes a lift carriage or scissor-style riser through a fixed stroke, and every inch of that stroke depends on a seal package that’s rated for the working pressure of your hydraulic pump.

We see the symptoms before we see the cause: a lift that used to rise in one smooth motion now hesitates, chatters, or needs two pump cycles instead of one. That’s usually the piston seal starting to bypass fluid internally, not an external leak you’d spot on the shop floor. We also record the gland thread pitch and the port fitting size, since those vary between Rotary, Challenger, and the BendPak/Atlas home-shop models even when bore sizes look similar on paper.

Once we have those numbers, we cross-reference against the seal kit catalog rather than ordering by lift model alone, because manufacturers have changed cylinder suppliers over the years and two lifts with the same model number can carry different bore specs depending on production date. A seal kit typically includes the piston seal, rod seal, wiper, O-rings for the gland and base, and sometimes a backup ring for high-pressure applications. We always replace all of it in one pass — never just the piece that looks worn — because mismatched wear on the other seals will undo a partial rebuild within weeks.

The Rebuild Process: What Actually Happens on the Bench

Rebuilding a cylinder off a forward lift 4 post is bench work, not floor work, and we tell every customer up front that it’s a half-day to full-day job once the cylinder is pulled. We drain the fluid, disassemble the gland, and inspect the rod for pitting or bends — a bent rod means the cylinder gets replaced outright, no amount of new seals will fix that. The bore gets honed if there’s minor scoring, or the whole cylinder gets scrapped if the scoring is deep enough to hold a fingernail.

From there it’s a clean reassembly: new seals lubricated with hydraulic fluid (never grease, which can degrade certain seal compounds), careful reinsertion of the rod to avoid nicking the new rod seal, and a bench test under pressure before it goes back on the lift. We check for external leaks at the gland, internal bypass by holding pressure and watching for rod creep, and full stroke travel to make sure nothing binds. Rebuild vs. Replace: The Decision We Actually Make in the Field

Where we push customers toward replacement is when the bore is scored badly enough to need more than a light hone, when the rod shows any bend (even slight bends cause premature seal wear that’ll have you rebuilding again within a year), or when the cylinder is an older discontinued design where sourcing a matching seal kit means custom-cutting O-rings. In those cases, a new cylinder built to current spec is the better investment, especially for a shop running the lift daily. Seal Material Matters More Than Most Shops Realize

Not all seal kits are built from the same material, and on a forward lift 4 post that sits in an unheated Iowa or Nebraska shop through winter, that matters. Standard nitrile seals work fine in a heated bay, but in a shop that swings from below freezing to 90-degree summer heat, we prefer polyurethane seal kits for their wider temperature tolerance and better abrasion resistance. Urethane costs a bit more per kit, but on a lift that’s outdoors-adjacent or in a shop without reliable climate control, the extra durability pays for itself in fewer callbacks.

We also pay attention to wiper seal quality specifically, since that’s the seal that keeps grit, dust, and moisture off the rod as it retracts. A cheap wiper lets contaminants ride back into the cylinder on every cycle, which accelerates wear on every other seal in the kit regardless of material. On lifts we install fresh, we spec urethane wipers standard now, even on lower-mileage shop applications, because the cost difference is minor compared to a full rebuild redo eighteen months later.
