This particular shop does restoration and metal work on trailers, small RVs, and the occasional heavy pickup that comes in with rust damage or a frame repair. They needed something rated heavy enough for loaded axles and long wheelbase units, but they also wanted a two-post footprint because floor space was tight. Symmetric arm lifts position the arms evenly on both sides of the vehicle, columns square to the frame, with the vehicle centered between the posts. For trailers and RVs without a driver’s door swing to worry about, this is often the simplest and most stable setup. There’s no need to angle the vehicle or worry about door clearance because most of what’s going up on the lift doesn’t have a cab you’re climbing in and out of constantly.

We recommended symmetric configuration for the bulk of this shop’s trailer work specifically because their loads are often long, awkward, and need to sit dead-center for weld access on both sides. A symmetric two-post also tends to be simpler to service — the arm geometry is more predictable, which matters when you’re troubleshooting a locking pin or reordering an arm restrictor part years down the road. For heavy metal fabrication where the vehicle isn’t going anywhere near the driver’s seat, symmetric wins on simplicity almost every time.

Asymmetric Arms: Where They Actually Pay Off

Asymmetric arms angle the front arms outward and the rear arms inward, which swings the vehicle slightly off-center between the columns. That geometry exists for one reason: door clearance on cars and trucks where a technician needs to open the driver’s door and get in and out repeatedly while the vehicle is in the air. If this shop had been doing more general truck and car repair alongside restoration work, asymmetric would have been the better call.

We swapped the worn components and walked their lead technician through what to watch for between our visits. Maintenance Habits That Keep Either Configuration Running

Whether you go symmetric or asymmetric, a forward lift BP9 unit needs the same basic maintenance discipline. Grease the arm pins and pivot points on a schedule, not just when something starts squeaking. Check cable tension and look for fraying, especially in a shop environment with metal dust and grinding debris in the air, which restoration bays have in abundance.
