This is his story, anonymized for privacy, from initial spec through concrete pour, install day, seasonal use, and the small maintenance events that come up in year one. Why a 4-post is the right forward lift for a car collector

The first decision the collector made, and it was the right one, was choosing a 4-post configuration over a 2-post. For a collector who stores vehicles seasonally and occasionally works on them, the 4-post configuration solves two problems at once. First, it doubles vehicle storage in a fixed square footage by stacking one car on the lift and one underneath. Second, when a car needs service, whether that’s brake bleed, oil change, or undercarriage inspection before winter storage, the same lift raises the vehicle to a comfortable working height without transferring it to a different piece of equipment. That’s the value proposition of a 4-post in a storage-and-service barn, and it’s why we recommend the configuration for essentially every collector call.

The specific model selection was driven by the vehicles in the collection. The collector has a mix of muscle cars, classic pickups, and one modern GT car, ranging from about 3,000 pounds to 4,800 pounds in curb weight. A 9,000-pound rated 4-post is comfortable margin for that mix with capacity to spare, and it’s the model we spec for the majority of collector calls in southwest Iowa. Drive-on ramps at the entry end, jack tray on rails, and optional casters for the columns to allow relocating the whole lift across the barn floor for cleaning are all specified during the initial quote, and they’re small options that make a real difference for a storage-and-service use case that will evolve over the years.

Concrete slab thickness, and what actually went in the pour

The barn was a new pole building poured specifically for the collection, so the concrete slab was greenfield work, which is a rare luxury. We had a conversation with the general contractor before the pour about the specific requirements for a 4-post forward lift, and the finished spec was six inches of 4,000 PSI concrete with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers throughout, plus an additional layer of #5 rebar in a two-foot band at each column footprint. That’s overkill for a 9,000-pound 4-post, since you can technically install one on four inches of 3,000 PSI, but overbuilding the slab gives the collector option value if he ever wants to add a heavier commercial lift or change layouts.

The pour was done in early spring after a full dry-out of the subgrade, and we scheduled the lift install for six weeks after pour date to give the concrete a full cure time. That six-week window is important. Installing on green concrete is a real problem because the anchor pull-out strength isn’t there yet, and we’ve seen installs fail in the first year on green concrete that would have been fine after a proper cure. Our standard recommendation is 28 days minimum, 45 days preferred, and always full-cure test if the pour date is uncertain. On a greenfield build, spending an extra two weeks on the schedule is a very small price for a lift you’ll own for two or three decades.

Install day and the first vehicle up on the forward lift

Install day for a 4-post in a barn is a bigger production than a 2-post. There are four columns instead of two, drive-on runways that have to be aligned and leveled to a tight tolerance, hydraulic cylinders on each column that need to be plumbed and bled together, and a cable-and-sheave system across all four columns that needs synchronizing so all four corners raise together. Our crew took a full day plus a couple hours the next morning on the finish tuning. The barn was empty except for the pour, which made the work easier with no vehicles to work around, plenty of forklift access, and level floor throughout.

The first vehicle up was a mid-sixties muscle car the collector wanted parked overhead for the summer. The moment we raised it and locked the runways at storage height, the collector could immediately drive a second car underneath. That was the payoff moment. One square of barn floor now stored two cars, and both were accessible for service without moving anything else. First-year use since that install has been about 40 percent storage and 60 percent service. The collector cycles cars up and down several times a month for detailing, minor mechanical work, and seasonal storage transitions. Zero mechanical issues in the first ten months. One phone call for a question about proper anchor torque re-check on the six-month mark, which we walked him through in a few minutes.

Seasonal storage: freeze cycle and hydraulic behavior

The barn is climate-controlled but not aggressively. It sits at about 45 degrees Fahrenheit through the winter, and the collector had a good question in month eight about how the forward lift hydraulic system handles cold-cycle behavior. The answer is that the standard hydraulic fluid on a current-production 4-post has a wide operating range and will function normally down to freezing without changes, but cycle speed slows perceptibly in cold weather because the fluid viscosity increases. That’s not a problem, it’s normal, and it doesn’t damage anything. In a truly cold barn, meaning below freezing, we recommend a synthetic hydraulic fluid change to maintain cycle speed and reduce cylinder-seal stress, but at 45 degrees the factory fluid is fine.

The other cold-weather consideration is condensation in the hydraulic reservoir over long non-use periods. When a lift sits for six months in a barn that has any humidity swing, water can condense inside the reservoir and eventually cause corrosion or foaming in the pump. Our recommendation is to cycle the lift fully, meaning all four columns raised to top and dropped to bottom, at least once every four to six weeks during storage-only periods. That agitates the fluid, warms the system briefly, and moves any settled condensation into circulation where it can be evaporated or removed at a scheduled fluid change. Small habit, big impact on long-term reliability, and the collector has adopted it as part of his monthly barn walk-through routine.

The first-year forward lift service events, in detail

Over twelve months of ownership the collector logged exactly three service events, all minor. First was the anchor-torque re-check at the six-month mark, which is a manufacturer-recommended procedure on every commercial-grade lift and takes about 20 minutes with a torque wrench. He did it himself after we walked him through the sequence and torque values by phone. Second was a hydraulic-fluid level top-up at ten months, since cylinder rod extension slightly reduces reservoir level over time as a small amount of fluid clings to the rod on each cycle, and topping up to the sight-glass mark is a five-minute job. Third was replacement of a minor safety-lock detent spring that had metal fatigue from a mis-cycle we suspect happened during transport.

That third one was a warranty call. The collector called us Monday morning, we shipped the spring the same day from the Ames stock, it arrived Wednesday, and he installed it himself Thursday evening. Total downtime was zero, because the safety locks still functioned in their un-sprung state and the lift was fully usable. That’s the ownership experience we want every customer to have on year one: nothing catastrophic, nothing surprising, and every small event resolved quickly with real parts and real phone support. Not every year is going to be that clean, but a well-installed lift on a proper slab with proper cure time and proper break-in habits is engineered to give a first year very close to that story, and this project delivered.

What we’d do differently on the barn build

Looking back on the first year, the two things we’d change on the barn build are minor but real. First, we’d have run a dedicated 120V outlet on a stand behind each column for a work light and impact wrench, rather than relying on extension cords from the wall. Cord management around a 4-post is an ongoing annoyance, and pre-wiring outlets at column stand positions solves it once forever. Second, we’d have specified LED overhead lighting at least one intensity level brighter than the general barn spec, because under a raised vehicle at eye level, standard barn lighting shadows the underbody and slows every task. LEDs are cheap, and the incremental cost of stepping up one tier is trivial compared to the annoyance of fixing it after the fact.

Neither of these is a lift-specific issue, but they’re the kind of thing we’d add to any collector-barn spec now that we’ve watched a first year of use play out. The lift itself performed exactly to spec. The concrete pour was overbuilt but pays back over decades, the model selection was right, the install went cleanly, and the maintenance profile has been a slow drip of five-to-twenty-minute tasks with no serious downtime. That’s a successful year one story, and it’s the outcome we’re targeting on every forward lift install we quote across southwest Iowa. Advice for other Iowa collectors considering a forward lift

For any Iowa collector thinking about adding a 4-post to a storage-and-service barn, the summary from a year of watching this project play out is: overbuild the concrete, allow full cure time, spec the drive-on ramps and jack tray up front rather than as an afterthought, and pre-wire outlets and lighting to the columns during general construction. Choose a 9,000-pound capacity for a mixed-collection vehicle mix and move up only if you have a specific heavy vehicle that needs the margin. Consider casters if the barn floor is truly finished and you might want to reposition the lift, though for most collectors a fixed installation is simpler and more secure long-term.
