It sounds like a minor sequencing question, but it changes how fast a wheel bearing service bay actually opens for business. We’ve walked fleets through both approaches, and there’s a clear winner depending on your timeline and your patience for freight delays.

Configuration One: Order Forward Lift Parts Before the Slab Cures

The first configuration we see, mostly from fleets working with a general contractor on a new bay, is ordering forward lift parts and even spare wear items before the concrete work is finished. The lift manufacturer needs anchor bolt patterns and pit dimensions locked in early anyway, so some fleets figure they might as well order the cylinder, cable set, and a spare swing arm at the same time and have everything staged and waiting.

The upside is real: by the time the slab cures and the lift itself arrives, you’re not waiting on a second freight shipment for wear parts, and if anything shows up damaged from freight, you’ve got weeks of buffer to get a replacement before the bay needs to open. The downside is inventory risk. Fleets that order spare cylinders or cable sets months ahead sometimes discover during final commissioning that the lift manufacturer made a minor spec change, and the part staged in the corner doesn’t quite match. It’s rare, but it happens enough that we recommend confirming the exact model and serial-tag configuration with the manufacturer before ordering anything beyond what ships with the base lift.

Configuration Two: Order Forward Lift Parts After Commissioning

The second configuration is more conservative: get the lift installed, commissioned, and running through its first few weeks of wheel bearing jobs before ordering any spare forward lift parts. The logic here is that you know exactly what you’ve got — serial number, exact arm configuration, exact cylinder spec — because it’s sitting in your bay and you can look at it or send us a photo.

Laid side by side, the early-order configuration front-loads a small amount of inventory risk in exchange for near-zero downtime risk later, while the after-commissioning configuration front-loads zero risk but exposes you to full freight lead time plus any custom fitting delays exactly when a bay is down and losing money. For a small fleet in southwest Iowa where a single down bay might represent a third or more of your total lift capacity, that downtime risk is the more expensive of the two by a wide margin.

Our general recommendation, after watching both play out across dozens of fleet accounts: order the lift itself early as usual, but hold off on speculative spare forward lift parts until commissioning confirms the exact configuration — then immediately order one spare set of the parts most likely to wear first for your specific use case. For wheel bearing work specifically, that’s usually cables and cylinder seals, since those see the most cycles relative to arm hardware. Staging those two items the week your lift is commissioned splits the difference: you’re not guessing at spec, and you’re not caught flat-footed when the first failure hits eighteen months down the road.

Why Wheel Bearing Work Is Harder on Forward Lift Parts Than General Service

Wheel bearing jobs put more stress on a forward lift’s arms and locks than routine oil changes or inspections, because the wheel is often fully off the vehicle and the technician is applying real force with a press or breaker bar while the vehicle sits raised. We tell every fleet build-out we’re involved with to treat the parts delivery as a variable, not a fixed date, and build the construction schedule so the bay is otherwise ready to receive the lift whether parts show up on day 10 or day 20.

This matters most for fleets coordinating multiple contractors. If your electrician is scheduled for the same week as a freight delivery that slips, you’ve paid for a trip that accomplishes nothing. We recommend sequencing so the lift’s mechanical install happens first, then hydraulic hookup, then any spare or wear forward lift parts get staged in a marked bin near the bay for whenever they arrive — rather than trying to synchronize every trade to a freight date that’s inherently an estimate.
