A front-engine oval track car with a flat, low nose behaves very differently under a lift than a rear-engine chassis with a splitter and side skirts. Race cars, especially anything built low and long with a front splitter or rear diffuser, often need asymmetric arms that shift the front pair rearward, giving more swing room for doors and clearing that low front clip.

The tradeoff is availability — asymmetric arm assemblies and their matching pads are often built to a narrower spec range, so lead times can run longer, and you’ll want to confirm your exact model’s arm part numbers before ordering rather than assuming cross-compatibility between brands.

Symmetric Arms: Where They Win for Storage

For straightforward seasonal storage — cars going up in October and coming back down in April — symmetric arm setups have real advantages beyond price. They’re simpler to swing into position because both sides mirror each other, which matters when you’re storing multiple cars and different crew members are moving vehicles on and off the lift throughout the off-season. Replacement forward lift parts for symmetric configurations are also generally easier to find in stock, since they’re used across a wider range of consumer and light commercial lifts, not just racing applications.

The limitation shows up on cars with aggressive front-end geometry. A symmetric arm’s natural swing radius is built around a centered pickup point, and if your race car’s frame rails sit unusually far forward or the nose sits low with limited ground clearance, you can end up fighting the arm just to get a pad under the car without touching bodywork. If that’s a recurring problem across your fleet, it’s usually cheaper in the long run to switch configurations once than to keep buying spacer blocks and extended pads to compensate.

Asymmetric Arms: Solving the Splitter and Aero Problem

Asymmetric arm setups shift the front arm pair back toward the columns, which opens up a wider swing path in front of the car — exactly what you need when a splitter or front aero piece would otherwise clip the arm on its way to the pickup point. For northwest Iowa teams running anything with real front-end aero, this is usually the deciding factor, not price.

The catch is that asymmetric forward lift parts are more specific to make and model than symmetric ones. Arm length, pad style, and even the cylinder routing can differ between brands, so when you’re sourcing replacement arms or pads for an asymmetric lift, get the exact model number off the column data plate before you order. Cables, Cylinders, and the Parts People Forget
