If you’re bringing an alignment rack into your shop, you need a real four post alignment lift install checklist before the freight truck ever shows up — not a mental list you’re piecing together the morning of delivery. We’ve installed alignment lifts in body shops, tire stores, and dealership service bays all over Iowa, and the jobs that go sideways almost always trace back to something that should have been checked weeks earlier: slab thickness, ceiling clearance, or a bay that’s a foot narrower than the salesperson assumed. This checklist is the one we actually use in the field, and it applies whether you’re running a Rotary rack or a Challenger four post.

Step One: Verify the Slab Before You Order Anything

Every four post alignment lift install checklist has to start underground, because that’s where the most expensive mistakes happen. Alignment racks with turnplates and jacking beams put concentrated point loads down through the columns, and a lot of older Iowa shop floors simply weren’t poured for that. We want a minimum slab thickness that matches the manufacturer’s engineering spec — usually 4 to 6 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or rebar-free structural concrete depending on the model — with no visible cracking, no expansion joints running through the footprint, and no evidence of a patched or resurfaced section.

We also check what’s under the slab. A shop built over old fill dirt or a filled-in pit is a red flag no matter how solid the surface concrete looks. If there’s any doubt, we recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection by someone who’s installed lifts on that same slab type before. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a four post alignment lift install gets delayed or, worse, has to be relocated after the anchors are already set.

Step Two: Measure Overhead and Runway Clearance Twice

Ceiling height kills more alignment lift installs than any other single factor, and it’s the item people guess at instead of measuring. You need clearance for the platform at full rise, plus the vehicle’s antenna, roof rack, or ladder rack riding on top of it, plus a safety margin for lighting, HVAC ductwork, and sprinkler heads that hang lower than the roof deck itself. We physically measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction in the exact footprint the lift will occupy, not just the general bay height.

Runway length matters just as much. Alignment platforms need enough approach and departure room for a full-size pickup or a longer commercial van to drive on straight without the tech fighting the wheel to line up turnplates. We also confirm door swing, adjacent bay clearance, and whether a drive-through configuration versus a single-entry layout fits your actual traffic pattern. Every checklist we run through includes a tape measure in hand, not a floor plan on a screen.

Step Three: Confirm Power and Air Requirements

Most four post alignment platforms run on standard 220-volt single phase power, but some heavier-duty and drive-on models with hydraulic jacking beams need more amperage or even three-phase service depending on the motor and pump configuration. We confirm the exact electrical spec against what’s already run to that bay before the lift arrives, because adding a new circuit or upgrading a panel takes time most shops don’t want to spend during install week.

Air requirements are just as easy to overlook. Turnplates, jacking beams, and some locking mechanisms rely on shop air, so we verify your compressor has the capacity and the line is run to the right spot in the bay. Step Four: Plan the Anchor Layout Around Real Bay Traffic

Anchor bolt placement isn’t just a manufacturer’s template — it’s a decision about how vehicles, tool carts, and people move through that bay for the next fifteen or twenty years. We lay out anchor positions after walking the actual traffic pattern: where cars enter, where a tech stands to run the alignment computer, where the tire machine or brake lathe sits nearby. A well-placed rack keeps cords, hoses, and foot traffic clear of the columns.

We also account for future flexibility. Some shops add a second alignment rack later, or want the option to run a scissor lift or additional service bay alongside the four post platform. Planning anchor spacing with that growth in mind now saves a much more expensive relocation project down the road, and it’s a step we always walk through with the shop owner before drilling a single hole.

Step Five: Calibrate and Verify Runout Before First Use

An alignment rack is only as accurate as its calibration, and that’s a step that gets rushed more often than it should. After the platform is leveled, anchored, and the turnplates and slip plates are installed, we run a full runout and level check across the entire runway before connecting any alignment computer. Even a small deviation in platform level can throw off camber and toe readings on every vehicle that rolls onto it afterward.

We also verify that turnplates spin freely, lock reliably, and read zero correctly, and that slip plates move without binding. Step Six: Train Every Tech Who Will Touch the Lift

Concrete cures, anchors seat, and small adjustments that weren’t visible on day one often show up after a few weeks of daily traffic.
