Myth One: “Cables Don’t Wear If the Lift Isn’t Loaded Often”

The Marion shop we’re talking about uses their four post car storage lift primarily to get underneath European cars for exhaust work and driveline service, not to store vehicles long-term. Their assumption was that because the platform doesn’t sit loaded for weeks at a time, the cables see less wear than a pure storage setup. That’s backwards. Cables wear from cycling — every time the platform goes up and down, the cable runs over the sheaves and pulleys, and that’s where fraying and wear actually happen, not from static load duration.

A lift used for frequent service work, raised and lowered several times a day, puts more cycles on the cable system in a month than a storage-only lift sees in a year. A proper inspection means running a gloved hand the full length of each cable, feeling for burrs or snags, checking for rust discoloration where moisture has gotten into the strands, and looking closely at the areas where the cable passes over a sheave or pulley — those contact points wear fastest. On a four post car storage lift, you also want to check for even tension across all four columns, since one cable stretching or wearing faster than the others is often the first sign something’s off, well before a visible strand breaks.

Myth Three: “Cables Only Matter on Two Post Lifts”

A lot of shop owners associate cable failure with two post lifts because that’s where the horror stories usually come from — arm swing, load imbalance, dramatic failure modes. But a four post car storage lift depends on its cable system just as much, specifically for the equalization that keeps all four corners of the platform rising and falling together. If one cable on your setup wears faster or stretches more than the others, the platform can rack slightly out of level, which puts uneven stress on the columns and rollers over time.

The inspection doesn’t need to be complicated. Run the platform up, engage the locks, and physically check each cable’s condition, tension, and the sheave contact points while nothing is under load. If you’re doing frequent service work under the platform rather than just parking cars on it, build the inspection into your regular maintenance rotation the same way you’d schedule an oil change — don’t wait for a symptom.

That’s the best-case scenario for catching a problem: early enough that a simple cable replacement solves it, rather than an emergency shutdown mid-service with a car up in the air. Why Replacement Intervals Matter More for Service Shops Than Storage Garages

The distinction between storage use and service use keeps coming up because it genuinely changes how you should maintain a four post car storage lift. A home garage owner storing a weekend car might only cycle their lift a few dozen times a year, and a cable replacement interval of five-plus years is often realistic there. A specialty shop like the one in Marion, cycling the platform daily for exhaust, driveline, and general service work, should plan on inspecting far more often and likely replacing cables on a three-to-five-year schedule depending on use, not waiting for a visible failure.
