Every few weeks somebody calls our shop in Ames and asks whether the four post lift they already own can handle four post lift alignment work, or whether they need to buy something different entirely. It is a fair question and the answer is rarely a clean yes or no. A four post runway lift is the natural platform for alignment because the wheels stay loaded on the runways at ride height, which is exactly the condition you need to measure and adjust caster, camber and toe. But not every four post is built or installed to alignment tolerances, and the difference between a storage lift and an alignment-capable lift comes down to specific hardware and a specific installation. Here is what we look at before we tell a customer yes.

Why a Four Post Is the Natural Alignment Platform
Alignment measurement only means something when the suspension is sitting at its normal loaded ride height. Hang a car by its frame on a two post and the control arms droop, the geometry changes, and any camber number you read is fiction. A four post keeps all four tires planted on solid runways, so the springs are compressed the way they are when the car is driving down Highway 30. That single fact is why alignment racks have been four post designs for decades and why we push customers toward a runway lift the moment they mention alignment revenue.
The second advantage is workflow. On a proper alignment rack the tech drives on, sets the parking brake, clamps the targets, and starts working at a comfortable standing height. There is no jacking, no repositioning arms, no crawling. A busy shop doing six or eight alignments a day feels that difference in labor hours by the end of the week. We have also seen shops use the same lift for tire rotations, exhaust work and general undercar service between alignments, which is part of why the payback math tends to work out. Turnplates, Slip Plates and What Actually Makes It an Alignment Lift
Here is the honest distinction: a four post lift becomes an alignment lift when it has front turnplates and rear slip plates built into the runways. Turnplates let the front wheels rotate freely so the alignment machine can perform a caster sweep, and slip plates let the rear axle relax laterally instead of binding against the runway surface and giving you a false toe reading. Without both, you are guessing. Some machines will even refuse to complete a sweep if the wheels cannot turn.
Purpose-built alignment four posts come from the factory with recessed turnplate pockets and slip plate pockets already cut into the runways, with filler plates that drop in when you want a flat surface for general service. Retrofitting a storage-grade runway lift is possible in some cases but it is not always clean, and cutting into runways you did not engineer is a bad idea. When a customer already owns a general-purpose four post and wants to add four post lift alignment work to the service menu, we usually look at whether the manufacturer offers an alignment kit for that exact model before we consider anything custom. Rotary and Challenger both build dedicated alignment models, and that is the path we recommend nine times out of ten.
Floor Flatness Is Non-Negotiable
The single most common reason four post lift alignment work goes badly in a shop is the floor. Alignment tolerances are measured in fractions of a degree, and a runway lift transmits whatever the floor does straight into the runways. If one base plate sits on a low spot, the lift racks slightly and your cross-camber readings drift. We have shimmed lifts in central Iowa shops where the slab had a half inch of fall across the bay because it was originally poured to drain toward a floor drain.
Before an alignment install we shoot the floor with a laser level across all four base plate locations. Concrete needs to be sound, thick enough for the anchors specified by the manufacturer, and cured. Then we shim the bases with steel shims, not wood, and we do it patiently until the runways read level in both directions. On a modern rack with an integrated alignment system, the lift itself often has leveling provisions and calibration routines, but those are meant to fine-tune an already level installation, not rescue a bad one. Skip this step and you will chase phantom alignment problems for years.
Runway Length, Capacity and Wheelbase Reality
Capacity is the number everybody asks about first, but for alignment the more important spec is usable runway length and how the turnplate pockets line up with the wheelbases you actually service. A shop working Iowa farm trucks, three-quarter ton diesels and long crew cabs needs a longer runway and a rear slip plate position that accommodates a 160-inch wheelbase. A performance shop doing Miatas and Mustangs has the opposite problem and needs the plates close enough together for short cars.
Most commercial alignment four posts run in the 12,000 to 14,000 pound range with runways in the 18 to 22 foot span, which covers nearly everything short of medium duty. Just be clear-eyed about it: a nine-thousand-pound home lift without turnplates is a toe-and-camber-check platform, not a production alignment rack.
Rolling Jacks, Ramps and Ceiling Height
Alignment work is not always wheels-down work. Ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings and rear trailing arms all need the suspension unloaded, which means you need a pair of rolling bridge jacks that ride on the runways. Buy them with the lift. Adding them later means matching jack rail dimensions and hydraulic or air supply, and the retrofit is almost always more expensive and more annoying than including them up front.
Ceiling height is the other thing people underestimate. A four post lifted to full rise plus the height of a tall pickup on top of it plus a rolling jack extended can eat a lot of vertical space. We ask for the clear height under the lowest obstruction — trusses, lights, door tracks, unit heaters — not the peak of the roof. Approach ramps matter too, especially in older Iowa buildings with tight bays. Long ramps need floor space in front of the lift, and if you are working low cars you may want a low-profile ramp option. These are the details that turn a good four post lift alignment work setup into a frustrating one when they get missed at the quote stage.
Alignment Machine Integration and Lighting
The lift and the alignment machine have to get along. Camera-based systems need clear sightlines to the wheel targets from a fixed tower or a mobile cabinet, which affects where you park the lift relative to walls and where you locate the machine. Some systems mount cameras on the lift columns themselves, which changes the install entirely and needs to be planned before the anchors go in. We ask what machine a shop is running, or planning to run, before we finalize a layout.
Lighting is the underrated part. Techs reading fine adjustments and turning tie rod sleeves under a raised vehicle need real light, not a single overhead fixture that the car now blocks. We recommend LED fixtures on the side walls at runway height plus a good drop light, and if you are wiring the bay anyway, add outlets at working height on both columns. Air drops on both sides save a hundred hose drags per week. None of this is glamorous, but four post lift alignment work is repetitive production work, and the bays that flow well are the bays where somebody thought about power, air and light before the concrete got drilled.
Maintenance That Keeps Readings Honest
An alignment rack drifts out of spec quietly. Cables stretch, equalization goes off, one runway sits a hair higher than the other, and nobody notices until a customer comes back complaining about a pull. We tell shops to put the lift on a real inspection schedule: check cable tension and equalization, inspect sheaves for wear and flat spots, verify the safety locks engage together on all four columns, and re-check runway level with a precision level at least annually.
Turnplates and slip plates need attention too. Grit gets into the bearings, the plates stop moving freely, and suddenly your caster sweeps are inconsistent. Clean them, keep the filler plates in when you are doing general service so debris does not pack the pockets, and replace worn plates rather than living with them.
