Start With What You’re Actually Lifting — Not What You Might Lift Someday

Capacity is where nearly every conversation begins, and it’s where the most money gets wasted. A half-ton crew cab pickup — the single most common vehicle in Iowa driveways — lands somewhere in the 5,500 to 6,500 lb range depending on trim and bed length. A three-quarter-ton diesel with a plow mount and a full fuel tank can push past 8,000. A classic Chevelle is under 4,000. So the honest question isn’t “how heavy can it go,” it’s “what are the two heaviest things that will ever sit on this?”

For pure passenger cars and light trucks, an 8,000 lb four-post has margin to spare. Step to 9,000 or 10,000 if a diesel three-quarter-ton or a dually is in the picture, and go 12,000 to 14,000 if you’re servicing box trucks, shuttle vans, or motorhomes. Where we push back is on the customer who wants a 14,000 lb lift for a garage that will only ever see a Tacoma and a Camaro. Higher capacity means longer, heavier runways, wider overall footprint, thicker posts, and a bigger hole in the budget — with no benefit you’ll ever use. Overbuying capacity also eats ceiling height, because heavier runways are thicker. The right move in any four post lift buying guide is to size to reality plus one comfortable step, then spend the leftover money on a better install and the accessories that actually get used.

Runway Length, Wheelbase, and the Drive-Through Width Nobody Measures

Runway length determines what fits, and it’s specified inconsistently across manufacturers — some quote overall runway, some quote usable ramp-to-ramp. A standard-length four-post handles wheelbases up to roughly 165 inches comfortably. An extended-length model gets you into 180-inch-plus territory, which is what you need for a long-bed crew cab, a Sprinter-style van, or a Suburban. If you’re a collector with a ’70s land yacht, measure the actual wheelbase rather than trusting the model year.

The number people skip is drive-through width — the clear opening between the posts on the drive-on end. This is the dimension that determines whether a wide-body truck with running boards and tow mirrors clears without a spotter and a lot of swearing. Most four-posts sit in the 96 to 110 inch range, and a few extra inches transform the daily experience. Then there’s the approach: measure from the garage door opening to the front of where the lift will sit. If you only have twelve feet of runway before the door, you’re going to be doing multi-point turns every single time. Ceiling Height, Rise, and the Iowa Pole-Barn Problem

Rise is the maximum height of the runway surface off the floor, and total required ceiling is rise plus the height of the tallest vehicle plus a little breathing room for the roof, an antenna, or a roof rack. Full-rise four-posts typically give you 68 to 82 inches of lift, which means a 12-foot ceiling is comfortable and a 10-foot ceiling is workable if you’re stacking a low car under a low car. Storage-height models with reduced rise exist specifically for the 9-foot residential garage, and they’re a legitimate answer rather than a compromise.

Iowa throws two wrinkles at this. First, a lot of the best shop space in this state is inside a pole barn, where the trusses are the real ceiling and the low point is a purlin or a rafter tie you didn’t notice. Second, garage door tracks and opener rails eat the exact vertical space you were counting on. We ask for three measurements: floor to the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint, floor to the door track, and the height of the tallest vehicle that’ll go on top. That’s usually enough to say yes, no, or “go with the storage-height version” before an order gets placed. Slab, Anchors, and Whether You Really Need to Bolt It Down

Four-posts are freestanding by design — the load path goes straight down through four columns instead of trying to peel two posts off the floor. That’s why many residential four-posts are approved unanchored, and why a caster kit is even an option. It also means slab requirements are gentler than what a two-post demands. Still, gentler doesn’t mean irrelevant. We want to see four inches of decent concrete at minimum, cured, reasonably level, and free of major cracking or spalling right where the posts land.

Where we get nervous is older farm-shop floors poured in stages, garages with a heavy slope to a center drain, and slabs with expansion joints running exactly where a post wants to sit. A slope of more than about an inch across the footprint means shimming, and shimming a four-post is normal, expected work — but it should be done with steel shim plates by someone who understands load transfer, not with cedar shakes. If your local code official or insurer wants the lift anchored, do it; the anchors are cheap and they don’t hurt anything. What matters more for daily safety is that all four posts are carrying evenly and the runways are level side to side, because an unlevel four-post makes the cable equalization system work harder than it should.

Cables, Locks, and the Parts You’ll Eventually Buy

Every four-post uses a cable equalization system to keep the runways level as they rise, and the cables are the wear item. On a lift that gets daily commercial use, we expect to inspect them annually and replace them somewhere in the five-to-ten-year range depending on duty cycle and environment. On a home lift that goes up twice a month, they last far longer — but they still age. Look for a lift with cable routing you can actually see and reach, because a design that buries the sheaves makes inspection a two-hour job instead of a ten-minute one.

Mechanical locks are the second thing to look at. You want positive locks at multiple heights, engaging audibly, with a release mechanism that works from a reasonable position rather than requiring you to reach under a loaded runway. Air-released locks are common on commercial units and are worth having if you have shop air. Slack-cable and cylinder-failure protection should both be present — they’re standard on reputable brands and absent on the cheapest imports. Part of the value in a four post lift buying guide is knowing that parts availability is a purchase criterion, not an afterthought: we stock cables, sheaves, lock dogs, cylinders, and power units for the major brands, and we’ve watched customers with off-brand lifts spend six weeks waiting on a single cable from overseas. Accessories: Which Ones Earn Their Keep

A four-post out of the crate is a storage and inspection platform. What turns it into a service lift is a rolling bridge jack, and it’s the accessory we recommend most often. A single sliding jack lets you get the wheels off for brake work, suspension, and tire rotation without a floor jack and a prayer. Two jacks let you lift both axles independently. If you plan to do any real wrenching rather than just parking, budget for at least one from day one — retrofitting is easy, but going a year without one is annoying.

Beyond that, drip trays are close to mandatory if a vehicle is going to live on the upper deck over another car, especially with an older engine that marks its territory. Aluminum ramps are lighter to move than steel and worth it if you’ll be handling them daily. A caster kit makes sense in a shared garage where the lift has to move for a project, less so in a dedicated bay. Air and electric drop lines mounted to a post cost very little and save constant cord dragging. Install, Power, and What We Do Differently in Iowa

Most four-posts ship with a 220V single-phase power unit, though 110V options exist on lighter residential models and three-phase is common in commercial settings. Get the circuit sorted before delivery — a dedicated 220V outlet within reach of the power unit post, sized per the manufacturer’s spec sheet. We’ve arrived to install lifts where the nearest suitable outlet was forty feet away, and an extension cord is not the answer for a hydraulic motor.

Freight is the other thing to plan. These come on a pallet or loose on a flatbed, and residential deliveries usually mean curbside with no forklift.
