A four post platform depends on all four columns sitting dead level with each other and with the ramps square to the frame. Why Four Post Lift Leveling and Alignment Starts With the Floor

Every four post lift leveling and alignment job we run begins with a hard look at the concrete, not the lift itself. Slabs settle unevenly over time, especially in older Iowa shop buildings where the floor was poured decades before anyone planned to put an alignment rack on it. We use a laser level or a long straightedge and shims across all four column base points before a single anchor goes in, because once concrete is drilled it’s a lot more work to correct a mistake than to catch it up front.

If the floor is out of level by more than about a quarter inch across the footprint, we shim under the column bases rather than trying to force the runways level by adjusting cables alone. Cables are for lifting force and synchronization, not for correcting a sloped floor — asking them to do both shortens their life and puts uneven load on the sheaves. On sloped or aging slabs we’ve poured a leveling pad rather than fight it forever. Get this part right and everything downstream — cable tension, ramp height, alignment accuracy — gets dramatically easier to dial in and keep dialed in.

Cross-Checking Column Height Before You Trust the Numbers

Once the lift is anchored, four post lift leveling and alignment work moves to checking that all four columns read identical height with no vehicle on the platform. We measure from the shop floor to the same reference point on each column — usually the top of the safety lock bar — and adjust cable tension until all four numbers match within a small tolerance. Even a small mismatch here translates into a platform that isn’t truly flat, which matters enormously for alignment work where toe and camber readings depend on a level reference plane.

We also check diagonally, not just side to side. A lift can read level front-to-back and back-to-front while still being twisted corner to corner, and that twist is invisible until a technician wonders why the alignment machine keeps drifting. Cable Synchronization and Why It Drifts Over Time

Cables stretch. It’s normal, it’s expected, and it’s exactly why four post lift leveling and alignment isn’t a one-time task — it’s maintenance. New cables see the most stretch in their first few months of service, which is why we tell every shop we install for to schedule a follow-up adjustment 60 to 90 days after a new lift goes into daily use. Skip that follow-up and you’ll notice one side creeping low, usually the side that sees more weight from heavier trucks or SUVs parked off-center.

Re-synchronizing means adjusting turnbuckles or cable ends evenly so tension matches across all runs, then re-checking platform height at all four corners with the lift both empty and loaded. We’ve seen shops try to fix a drifting platform by only adjusting the low corner, which masks the symptom without fixing the underlying imbalance. The correct approach touches every cable path and confirms the fix holds under an actual vehicle, not just empty on the rack.

Alignment Accuracy Depends on More Than the Rack

A perfectly leveled platform still won’t deliver good alignment numbers if the runways themselves are out of square to each other or to the lift’s centerline. Warning Signs Your Platform Has Drifted Out of Level

Most shops don’t catch a leveling problem until it’s already affecting work. Watch for a vehicle that visibly leans or rocks once it’s up, doors that won’t close flush at ride height when they closed fine on the ground, or an alignment machine that gives inconsistent readings on the same car between runs. Unusual roller or chain noise on one column versus the others is another early tell — it usually means that column is carrying more load than its neighbors because the platform isn’t sharing weight evenly anymore.
