Good four post lift maintenance is mostly about paying attention to four steel cables and a handful of moving latches — and almost nobody does it until something goes sideways. What we see over and over isn’t catastrophic failure; it’s slow neglect. A cable that stretched an inch and never got equalized. A slack-cable safety packed with tire crumbs so it can’t drop. A power unit that’s been running two quarts low since the Obama administration. None of that is expensive to fix if you catch it. All of it is expensive to ignore. Here’s what we check, in the order we check it.

Start With the Cables, Because That’s What’s Holding the Car
On a four-post, the hydraulic cylinder doesn’t lift the runways directly — it pulls cables that route over sheaves at the top of each column and carry the load. Those cables are the single most important item on any maintenance list. We inspect the full length of every cable, foot by foot, looking for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, and any bird-caging near the terminations. The rule we use in the field: a handful of broken wires in one lay length, or any visible core damage, and the cable set gets replaced. Not one cable — the set. Mixing a new cable with three stretched ones guarantees you’ll be re-equalizing every month.
Second, lubrication. Cables need a penetrating wire-rope lube, not chassis grease smeared on the outside. Grease sits on the surface, traps grit, and turns into a grinding compound where the cable passes over the sheave. We use a light penetrating lubricant that wicks into the strands, applied with the lift at mid-height so you can reach the sections that normally hide inside the columns. Spin the sheaves by hand while you’re up there — a sheave that doesn’t turn freely is sawing the cable instead of rolling it, and that’s the most common cause of premature failure we find on older units. Equalize the Runways Before You Chase Anything Else
Cables stretch. It’s not a defect, it’s steel doing what steel does under repeated load, and it happens fastest in the first few months after installation. When cables stretch unevenly, one corner of the runway sits low, the lift racks slightly in the columns, and every part of the system starts wearing at an angle. Owners usually notice it as a lift that “feels sticky” going up, or one lock that engages a beat before the others.
Checking it takes a tape measure and ten minutes. Raise the lift to a comfortable working height, then measure from the floor to the underside of the runway at all four corners. You want them within about an eighth of an inch of each other. If they’re not, adjust the take-up nuts at the cable terminations a little at a time — a half-turn per pass, then re-measure — until all four corners agree. Always lower the lift onto the mechanical locks before you crawl underneath to adjust anything. Never work under a lift held up by hydraulic pressure alone. On a brand-new install we tell customers to re-check equalization at thirty days, ninety days, and then every six months. After the first year, cable stretch settles down considerably and this becomes a routine part of ongoing four post lift maintenance rather than a recurring chore.
Locks, Ladders, and the Slack-Cable Safety
Every four-post has two safety systems that people forget exist because they work silently. The first is the mechanical lock ladder — the toothed rail inside each column that catches the runway at set heights. The second is the slack-cable safety, a spring-loaded device that drops a dog into the ladder the instant a cable loses tension. That’s your protection if a cable ever lets go.
Test both. Raise the lift a couple of feet, lower it onto the locks, and listen: you should hear four distinct clicks as it comes up, and all four locks should engage at the same height. If one is lazy, the pivot is dry or the linkage is bent. Clean the ladders and pawls with brake cleaner, check for chipped or cracked teeth, and lubricate the pivot points with a light oil — heavy grease attracts the dirt that jams them in the first place. For the slack-cable safety, push each latch by hand and confirm it moves freely and springs back. On lifts in dusty shops or gravel-lot situations we’ve found these completely packed with grit, which means the safety was decorative, not functional. Bent or worn lock ladders aren’t a field repair; those get replaced. Hydraulics: Fluid, Hoses, and the Slow Drift Problem
The power unit is the easiest thing on the lift to maintain and the most commonly neglected. Check fluid level with the lift fully lowered — that’s when the reservoir is full. Low fluid causes cavitation, which sounds like the pump is grinding gravel and slowly destroys the motor. Most units run AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or 10W non-detergent motor oil depending on the manufacturer; check the tag on your reservoir rather than guessing. In an unheated Iowa garage, a lighter viscosity makes a real difference on January mornings.
Change the fluid roughly every two years in a working shop, or when it looks milky or dark. Milky means water intrusion, usually from condensation in a building that swings from freezing to humid. While you’re there, run your hand along every hose and fitting looking for weeping. Hydraulic hoses have a service life whether they leak or not — cracked outer jacket, stiff sections, or any bulge means replace it. If your lift drifts down more than a small amount overnight, you’ve either got a leaking cylinder seal or a check valve holding dirt, and that’s worth diagnosing before it becomes a habit you work around. Storage Lifts and Alignment Racks Need Different Attention
A home storage four-post that holds one car for eight months a year has a completely different wear profile than a shop lift cycling fifteen times a day. On the storage side, the enemy is stagnation: cables that sit under constant static tension in one position, hydraulic seals that dry out, and rodents that find the power unit wiring appetizing. We tell home users to cycle the lift fully up and down at least once a month even when nothing needs moving, and to store the vehicle resting on the locks rather than on hydraulic pressure. Alignment racks are the opposite problem — heavy duty cycles plus a requirement for dead-level accuracy. Slip plates and rear turnplates need to be clean, free-moving, and pinned when not in use. Runway level gets verified with a precision level or the manufacturer’s procedure, and any equalization drift throws your alignment numbers off before the machine ever reads a wheel. Air lines to the lock releases and jack platforms need water separators drained, especially in humid summers. Anchors, Floor, and the Stuff Under the Baseplates
Four-post lifts are often freestanding, which leads people to assume the floor doesn’t matter. It matters. The concrete under those baseplates carries concentrated point loads, and if it’s thin, cracked, or poured over poorly compacted fill, the columns will settle unevenly over time. We check for hairline cracks radiating from baseplates, spalling, and any gap under a plate that means the load isn’t distributed. Shims are a legitimate fix when done right with full-contact steel plate — a stack of washers under one corner is not.
If your lift is anchored, pull a torque wrench on the anchor bolts once a year and confirm they’re at the manufacturer’s spec. Anchors loosen from vibration and thermal cycling, and a loose anchor lets the column rock a fraction of a degree under load, which telegraphs straight into cable wear. Also look at the crossmembers and welds — cracked welds at the runway-to-crossmember joints are a red flag we occasionally find on well-used older units, and they usually mean the lift has been overloaded or loaded off-center repeatedly. Any structural crack takes the lift out of service until it’s evaluated. Skipping the structural walk-around is the single biggest gap in most DIY four post lift maintenance routines.
Building a Routine You’ll Actually Follow
The best maintenance plan is the one that gets done, so we keep it simple for the shops we service. Daily, before the first car: eyeball the cables you can see, listen for the locks, check that the safety releases return. Monthly: full cable inspection, lubricate sheaves and lock pivots, check hydraulic fluid, verify runway level at four corners. Annually: full documented inspection, torque anchors, change hydraulic fluid on schedule, inspect welds and structural members, and replace anything marginal rather than watching it another year.
