Garage car storage lifts get bought for one reason most of the time in our part of the state: space. But we hear from a lot of guys around the Iowa Great Lakes region who also want to actually work on the vehicle once it’s parked up in the air, and one of the most common jobs we hear about is CV axle and half-shaft replacement. That job is doable on a storage lift, but only if you plan the electrical circuit before the lift shows up on your dock. Why Electrical Planning Matters Before You Buy Garage Car Storage Lifts

Most garage car storage lifts run on a single-phase motor, typically 220-volt, single-phase, drawing somewhere between 15 and 20 amps depending on the unit and manufacturer. That sounds simple until you realize a lot of older pole buildings and detached garages in our region were wired decades ago for lighting and a compressor, not a hydraulic power unit that pulls a real inrush current on startup. We’ve had customers order a lift, get it delivered, and then discover their panel is maxed out or their run from the panel to the garage is too long and undersized, causing voltage drop that trips the motor’s overload protection.

Before you buy, walk out to your panel and count open breaker slots, then check the wire gauge feeding your garage sub-panel if you have one. A dedicated 20-amp or 30-amp circuit, on 10-gauge or 8-gauge wire depending on run length, is the safe target for most residential four-post and two-post units. If you’re three cars deep in a 30×40 or larger pole building with 12-foot sidewalls, that’s plenty of ceiling height for a full-rise lift, but don’t let the room fool you into skipping the electrical math. We’ll ask about your panel and wire run on every quote call because it changes what we recommend.

CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Needs Height, Not Just a Parking Spot

If you’re buying garage car storage lifts specifically because you also want to swap CV axles or half-shafts, treat the lift like a service lift, not just a rack. Pulling a half-shaft means getting under the front or rear subframe with a breaker bar, sometimes a slide hammer, and you need both hands free and full swing room. A basic four-post storage lift with no jack attachment leaves the wheels on the ground and the suspension loaded, which makes axle removal miserable. You want either a bottle-jack rolling accessory that fits between the runways, or a two-post configuration that lets the suspension hang free.

We talk customers through this trade-off constantly. A four-post is rock-solid for storage and easy to drive onto, but stock four-post decks don’t let wheels drop. Add a rolling bridge jack, and now you can raise one end at a time to pull a half-shaft with the tire hanging loose. It’s a good middle ground for someone who wants storage most of the year and real CV axle access a few times a season, and it doesn’t change your electrical requirements much since the jack is usually air or hand-hydraulic, not a second motor circuit.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What Home Garages Actually Get

Almost every residential installation we do in the Iowa Great Lakes region runs single-phase power because that’s what’s available at the meter for a home or detached garage. Three-phase service exists mostly in commercial shops and some larger pole buildings with agricultural service, and it changes the motor spec on the lift you’d order. If you happen to have three-phase available, some commercial-grade storage lifts can be spec’d for it and it often means smoother motor performance and less amperage draw per leg, but it’s not something we default to for a home order because most residential meters simply don’t have it.

What we do see mixed up a lot is customers assuming 110-volt household outlets can run a lift. They can’t, not for anything beyond a small portable unit, and even those are limited in lifting capacity. If your garage currently only has 110-volt outlets and a single 100-amp main panel already loaded with a furnace, water heater, and shop tools, that’s a conversation to have with an electrician before the lift arrives, not after. We’d rather tell you that up front than have you stuck with a lift you can’t power.

Concrete Thickness and Anchoring for Garage Car Storage Lifts

Electrical gets the headlines, but the slab under garage car storage lifts matters just as much for a CV axle bay because you’ll be putting side-load stress on the columns when you’re leaning into a breaker bar. Most four-post and two-post residential lifts want a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and some manufacturers spec closer to 4.5 inches with a certain PSI rating, especially for two-post lifts that concentrate load into four anchor points instead of spreading it across a longer runway footprint like a four-post does.

We’ve had callers tell us they’ve got 4 inches of reinforced concrete and want a two-post anyway, and depending on the exact lift and the rebar spacing, that can be marginal. This is exactly why a four-post storage lift with a jack accessory gets recommended so often for home garages with older or thinner slabs — the load spreads out over a bigger footprint. If you’re unsure what you’re working with, we’ll ask for the age of the pour and whether it’s rebar or wire mesh reinforced, and we can usually tell you pretty quickly whether your slab is a good candidate.

Sizing Garage Car Storage Lifts for a Multi-Car Pole Building

A lot of the calls we get involve a 30×40 or larger pole building with 12-foot sidewalls, wanting to store one car on the lift and park another directly underneath. That’s a completely realistic setup, and it’s one of the best uses of garage car storage lifts in a home shop, but it depends on the lift’s rise height and your ceiling clearance. Twelve feet of sidewall generally gives enough room for a full-rise four-post with a vehicle underneath, but you need to subtract the height of the vehicle going up top and confirm there’s still headroom below for the parked car and a person walking around it.

We usually walk customers through the exact numbers: platform height at full rise, vehicle height, and remaining clearance underneath. For a passenger car in the 7,000-pound-or-under range, most standard four-post storage lifts handle that weight without needing to step up to a heavier-duty commercial model. That keeps the price and the footprint reasonable for a home shop while still giving you the second parking spot you’re trying to create.

Rolling Bridge Jacks and Casters: Flexibility Before You Commit

One thing we tell first-time buyers of garage car storage lifts is that you don’t have to bolt everything down on day one. Runways and jack bridges can often be ordered with casters instead of a fixed base, which lets you roll the whole setup around your garage floor while you figure out your permanent layout. It’s a small add-on cost, but it buys you flexibility if you’re still deciding exactly where the lift, the workbench, and the second parked car are going to live long-term.

Casters aren’t a requirement — plenty of customers bolt straight to the floor on day one because they already know their layout. But if you’re building out a new pole building shop and haven’t lived in the space yet, we’ll usually suggest starting with rolling components. You can drag the runway to a different bay, test clearance for opening car doors, and make sure your CV axle work has enough swing room before anything gets permanently anchored to that expensive concrete you just poured.
