Straight storage — park a car up top, park another underneath — is one job. Exhaust and driveline access is a different job entirely, even though the same piece of equipment can often do both. When a foreman is trying to drop a driveshaft, cut out a rusted muffler, or replace a cat, he needs clear access along the full length of the underside, not just a couple of open spots between crossmembers. That means the runway spacing, the placement of the crossbeam, and the height range of garage car storage lifts all matter more than they would if you were just stacking cars for the winter.

We steer shops away from basic parking lifts with fixed low decks when driveline work is part of the plan. You want a model that lifts high enough for a mechanic to stand upright, with open-access runways rather than a solid deck that blocks the exhaust path. Weight Capacity Isn’t Just About the Heaviest Vehicle

Shops tend to size a lift around their heaviest truck and stop there, but that’s an incomplete way to plan. You also need to think about uneven weight distribution during driveline work — pulling a transmission or dropping a rear axle shifts load dramatically, and a lift rated right at the edge of your heaviest vehicle’s curb weight doesn’t leave margin for that kind of work.

We generally recommend building in at least 20 percent headroom above your heaviest regular vehicle when sizing garage car storage lifts for a shop doing exhaust and driveline work. A 9,000 lb model handling a 7,000 lb crew cab dually gives you room to work safely even with parts removed and weight shifted. Slab condition matters as much as the lift itself. Older shop floors in this region were often poured for foot traffic and light equipment, not four contact points bearing several tons apiece.
