You need full wheel-off access, a clear line to the transmission or transaxle, and enough swing room to walk a slide hammer or a puller into position without banging it on a lift arm. The tradeoff is ceiling height. Overhead configurations need real headroom, and a lot of the older pole-barn and converted-ag buildings we see between Fairfield and Keokuk have 12 to 14 foot sidewalls that get tight once you add the beam and a vehicle at full lift height. We measure this on every site visit before quoting, because a lift that looks great in a catalog photo can be six inches too tall for a real building. For axle work specifically, baseplate setups still give you full underbody access; you’re just working around two freestanding columns instead of a beam overhead. Clearance Math: What Actually Fits Your Bay

Baseplate only needs clearance for the vehicle itself at full height, which is why it fits so many more southeast Iowa buildings, especially older ag-conversion shops with lower trusses.

Width matters just as much as height for axle work. You need enough space between columns to open both doors and still have a tech standing at the wheel well with a puller. We typically spec a wider column spread for shops doing regular CV axle and suspension work than for shops that mostly do oil changes and tires, because you need that extra elbow room. Get this wrong and you’ll find yourself parking cars slightly off-center just to make room to work, which defeats the purpose of buying garage car storage lifts built for exactly this kind of job in the first place.
