The Waterloo Garage: What We Were Working With

The customer’s garage was a 24×30 detached building with a standard 9-foot flat ceiling and a 7-foot overhead door. He wanted to park his lifted overlanding rig up top and keep a daily driver underneath, which is a textbook use case for garage car storage lifts, but the vehicle height changed everything. Roof rack, awning, and antenna added almost 14 inches over stock height, and that eats into clearance fast when you’re only starting with 9 feet to work with.

We measured the vehicle with all the gear mounted, not just the spec sheet height, because that’s where most ceiling clearance mistakes happen. A two-post or four-post storage lift needs room for the vehicle, the platform thickness, and the safety lock height at full rise, plus a few inches of margin. On paper the rig would have cleared a taller building with room to spare, but at 9 feet we had to get creative. We ended up recommending a lower-profile four-post unit with a reduced overall height at full extension, which let him park the loaded rig up top without scraping the ceiling or ductwork running along one wall.

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing kills just as many storage lift installs. The Waterloo garage door was 7 feet tall, and the rig on the platform sat close to 8 feet with the rack and awning attached. That meant the vehicle couldn’t be driven straight in and out once it was elevated or even parked at ride height with the rack on, so we had to plan the layout around loading the rig with gear removed, then reinstalling the rack and awning once it was parked.

This is a conversation we have on almost every garage car storage lifts quote: what’s the tallest configuration the vehicle will ever be in, and does the door clear it. A lot of guys forget to account for aftermarket bumpers, roof tents, or ladders when they measure. We always tell customers to measure bay width and door height with the vehicle in its worst-case configuration, not its cleanest one. It’s a five-minute check that prevents a very expensive surprise on install day.

Wheel Bearing Service Was the Real Driver

Storage wasn’t the only goal. The owner does his own wheel bearing service, brake work, and suspension upgrades on the overlanding build, and he wanted a lift he could actually work under, not just park on. That ruled out some of the cheaper storage-only platforms that don’t leave enough room to get a floor jack and stands underneath comfortably. We spec’d a four-post with a sliding jack tray so he could roll the jack down the runway, lift a corner, and pull wheels for bearing service without needing a separate two-post for lift-and-work jobs.

That combination — full vehicle storage up top or on the runway, plus real service capability — is why four-post units dominate the garage car storage lifts category for enthusiasts and off-road builders. You get the storage function every day and the service function when you actually need to turn a wrench. For a guy doing his own wheel bearing packing, ball joint work, and brake jobs on a heavy overlanding rig, that flexibility mattered more than saving a few inches of ceiling clearance would have on a taller model.

How We Measured Before Ordering Anything

Before we quoted equipment, we went out and measured the actual space: ceiling height at multiple points (older pole buildings are rarely perfectly flat), door header height, any HVAC or electrical conduit running across the ceiling, and the exact footprint of the bay. We also measured the vehicle in its tallest and widest configuration. That data went into picking a specific model and rise height rather than guessing off a spec sheet.

This is standard practice for us on garage car storage lifts installs, especially in older pole buildings and detached garages where ceiling height wasn’t planned around a lift in the first place. We’d rather spend twenty extra minutes on-site with a tape measure than deliver a unit that doesn’t clear the rafters. On this job it meant the difference between a lift that worked perfectly and one that would have required cutting into the ceiling structure, which nobody wants to do to a building that’s otherwise in great shape.

Concrete and Anchoring Considerations

The Waterloo garage had a 5-inch slab, which was solid enough for a four-post storage lift without additional reinforcement. That’s not always the case — we see a lot of older Iowa garages and pole buildings with 4 inches of unreinforced concrete, which can limit anchor pull-out ratings and sometimes rules out heavier two-post configurations entirely. Before we finalize any garage car storage lifts order, we ask about slab thickness and rebar, because it changes which models are safe to install without pouring a new pad.

In this case the four-post distributes weight across four contact points rather than concentrating it at two anchor locations, which is part of why four-post storage lifts are often the safer bet for garages with thinner or older concrete. We still torqued anchors to spec and did a full load test before signing off. Skipping that step to save time isn’t something we do, even on a straightforward storage application where the vehicle isn’t going to be lifted and lowered dozens of times a day like it would be in a commercial shop.

What We’d Tell Anyone Shopping in a Similar Building

If you’re looking at garage car storage lifts for a pole building, detached garage, or older structure, start with three measurements before you call anyone: ceiling height at the lift location, door height and width, and slab thickness. Then measure your vehicle in its tallest, widest, real-world configuration — not the manufacturer’s stock spec. Those four numbers narrow down your options faster than any brochure will.
