Last year we installed garage car storage lifts for an RV and trailer service shop in the Des Moines metro, and their first year with the equipment taught us as much as it taught them. The shop needed to store customer vehicles waiting on brake service while still running rotor swaps in an adjacent bay, and they had to decide between an overhead configuration and a baseplate configuration before we ever poured a single anchor. Deciding Between Overhead and Baseplate Before Install Day

Before we ever showed up with equipment, the shop owner asked us the same question most buyers ask: what’s actually different between overhead and baseplate garage car storage lifts? An overhead configuration runs the top beam across the ceiling structure, which frees up floor space around the lift but requires solid ceiling mounting points and enough overhead clearance to matter. A baseplate configuration keeps everything anchored to the floor with a connecting beam at ground level, which is more forgiving on buildings with unfinished or uncertain ceiling framing but does leave a low beam across the floor that techs have to step over.

For this shop, the ceiling in their RV bay had exposed steel trusses that couldn’t take an overhead mount without engineering review, so we went with baseplate. In a different building with finished ceiling joists rated for the load, we’d have leaned overhead instead. Neither option is universally better — it depends entirely on what your building can structurally support.

Month One: Learning the Floor Space Tradeoffs

The first month after install, the shop’s techs adjusted their walking patterns around the low baseplate beam more than they expected. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but it was a real adjustment, especially when rolling a floor jack under a trailer parked nearby. We’d mentioned this on the sales call, but experiencing it daily is different from hearing about it once.

By week three, the crew had rerouted their tool cart path around the beam and stopped thinking about it entirely. That’s typical — baseplate storage lifts change your floor traffic pattern for a couple weeks, then become invisible. If your shop runs high foot traffic constantly through that specific aisle, overhead is worth the extra structural planning to avoid the beam altogether.

Brake Service Workflow With a Storage Lift in the Mix

This shop’s main use case was storing a customer vehicle overnight or over a weekend while running brake service and rotor swaps on other vehicles in the shop. Garage car storage lifts aren’t primarily built as service lifts, but this shop discovered they could run light brake work on the storage lift itself using a rolling bridge jack in the runway, which let them free up their main service lift for bigger jobs.

That flexibility mattered more than they expected going into year one. On a busy week with three RVs and two pickups needing rotor work, having a second lift that could handle basic pad and rotor swaps meant fewer vehicles sitting on the shop floor waiting their turn. It wasn’t the primary reason they bought the equipment, but it became one of the most-used features by month six.

What Changed at the First Annual Service Check

Around month eleven, we came back out for the first annual inspection on the lift. Cables, hydraulic lines, and anchor bolts all checked out fine, which is typical for equipment installed correctly and used within its rated capacity. The one adjustment we made was retightening a couple of anchor bolts that had settled slightly after the first heavy-use season — completely normal on a new concrete pour and nothing that indicated a problem.

We also walked the shop through what to watch for between our visits: listening for uneven cable noise, checking that both sides rise evenly, and keeping the runways clear of debris that RV service tends to generate. A basic maintenance habit like that extends the life of garage car storage lifts significantly and catches small issues before they become expensive ones.

Weight Ratings for RVs, Trailers, and Daily Drivers Together

One thing this shop had to plan for that a typical passenger-car shop doesn’t: their storage lift needed to handle everything from a lightweight sedan to a loaded travel trailer axle assembly brought in on a dolly. We sized the lift to the heaviest realistic load they’d store, not the average, because underrating capacity is the single most common mistake we see shops make when they buy based on their typical car instead of their heaviest vehicle.

If your shop mixes RV, trailer, and daily-driver work under one roof, tell your installer the heaviest single item you’ll ever park on the lift, not just what you store most often. Garage car storage lifts rated too light for an occasional heavy load create a safety problem the one time it matters most.

Baseplate Configuration and Concrete Reality

A lot of shop buildings around the Des Moines metro were poured for general use, not specifically for lift anchoring, and that shapes whether baseplate or overhead makes more sense. Baseplate storage lifts distribute anchor points across the floor, which works well on a standard 4-inch slab as long as it’s in good condition without major cracking near the anchor zones. We test core samples or at minimum visually inspect the slab on every quote before recommending a configuration.

This particular shop had a clean, well-poured slab from a recent building expansion, which made baseplate straightforward. A shop with an older, thinner, or more deteriorated slab might need reinforcement work first, or might be a better candidate for overhead mounting if the ceiling structure can support it instead.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Buying Their First Storage Lift

Looking back at this shop’s first year, the biggest lesson wasn’t about the equipment itself — it was about asking the configuration question early instead of assuming. Overhead versus baseplate isn’t a preference decision made on price alone; it’s dictated by your ceiling structure, your floor traffic patterns, and how your techs actually move through the shop during a normal day.

We’d rather spend extra time on a site visit figuring out which configuration fits your specific building than sell you the wrong one and have to retrofit later. For any RV or trailer shop considering garage car storage lifts, that upfront planning conversation is worth more than any spec sheet.
