Minimum Thickness for a 2-Post Lift

The most common garage concrete slab requirement for a car lift is thickness, and for a standard two-post lift most manufacturers call for a minimum of 4 inches of concrete under each anchor point, with 4.5 to 6 inches being the safer, more common target for a residential two-post. That number assumes the slab is a single, uninterrupted pour — not two sections butted together, not a patch job over an old crack, and not a thin topping poured over gravel. If your garage was built decades ago with a 3 to 3.5 inch slab poured for parking cars, not lifting them, that’s usually not enough and we’ll tell you so before we sell you anything.

Thickness alone doesn’t tell the whole story. We’ve walked into garages with a full 5 inches of slab that still failed our anchor pull test because the concrete underneath was soft, aggregate-starved, or full of hairline cracking from years of freeze-thaw cycles. That’s exactly why we never quote a car lift install off a phone description of slab thickness — we come out, we core or probe the pour, and we confirm what’s actually there before recommending anchor locations.

Minimum PSI Strength You Need

Beyond thickness, the garage concrete slab requirements for a car lift always include a compressive strength minimum, typically 3,000 PSI cured concrete, though many lift manufacturers now specify 3,500 PSI or higher for anchor-rated bays. PSI rating matters because it’s what actually keeps an expansion or wedge anchor from pulling loose under the lateral load a two-post lift puts on the slab every time you raise a vehicle. A slab can look flawless on the surface and still be under-strength if it was poured too wet, cured too fast in cold weather, or mixed with the wrong aggregate ratio.

Rebar or welded wire mesh helps control cracking and adds tensile strength, but a well-poured, adequately thick, high-PSI slab without reinforcement can still pass anchor testing — reinforcement is a bonus, not a substitute for the fundamentals. What we watch for instead is whether the reinforcement, if present, is positioned correctly. Mesh sitting too close to the surface, or rebar chairs that collapsed during the pour, can actually create a weak plane right where your anchors need to bite.

We also see homeowners assume that fiber-reinforced concrete automatically meets every requirement. Fiber mesh helps with surface cracking and shrinkage, but it doesn’t replace the compressive strength or thickness a lift manufacturer specifies. Cure Time Before Anchoring

Concrete needs a full 28 days to reach its rated cure strength, and installing anchors before that window closes is asking for trouble — the anchors simply won’t hold to spec in concrete that hasn’t finished curing. We’ve had customers pour a new slab, call us the following week wanting a lift installed by the weekend, and we’ve had to say no.

That 28-day window isn’t flexible just because you’re in a hurry or the weather’s turning cold. Iowa winters complicate this further — concrete poured too late in the fall may not cure properly before temperatures drop, and slabs poured over frozen or partially frozen ground rarely perform to spec regardless of thickness or PSI. Anchor Pull Testing on Installation Day

We torque test each anchor to the manufacturer’s specified load rating before we ever hang the lift’s columns. If an anchor spins, cracks the surrounding concrete, or pulls short of spec, that tells us something about the slab that theory alone can’t.
