Start With Ceiling Height, Not Floor Space

Most people planning a garage layout for a two post lift think first about how wide the bay is, but ceiling height is usually the limiting factor. A vehicle raised to full height on a two post lift, plus the height of the columns and overhead beam on symmetric-style units, can require more clearance than people expect. Column Spacing and the Vehicle You Actually Own

Wider spacing suits trucks and SUVs with longer wheelbases, while narrower spacing works better for sedans and compact cars. If your garage regularly hosts a mix of vehicles, from a daily driver sedan to a service truck, you want to lean toward a column spacing that accommodates the largest vehicle without making the smallest one awkward to position.

This is where a lot of DIY installs go sideways. People eyeball the columns based on their current vehicle and don’t account for the pickup they plan to buy next year, or the fact that a low sports car needs different arm reach than a work van. Leave Room to Actually Open Doors

A two post lift raises a vehicle by the frame or pinch welds, and once it’s up, the doors need to swing open without hitting the columns. Plan Around the Garage Door and Walkways

Every good garage layout for a two post lift accounts for the overhead door track and the path you walk to get around the vehicle. Garage door tracks run several feet back from the opening, and if your columns sit too close to that zone, the door either won’t close or the springs and track will interfere with a raised vehicle. We’ve measured plenty of Iowa garages where the ideal lift position on paper turned out to conflict directly with the door track once we got a tape measure on it.

Beyond the door, think about how you’ll walk around the shop with a vehicle in the air. You need clear paths to your workbench, tool chest, and any secondary work area, plus enough room to roll a floor jack or transmission jack under the lift from more than one angle. A lift that technically fits the slab but blocks your only walking path to the back wall isn’t a workable layout, it’s just a lift that happens to be bolted down.

Slab Thickness and Anchor Requirements

Layout isn’t only about horizontal and vertical space, it’s also about what’s underneath the columns. A two post lift places significant point loads on the slab through its anchor bolts, and most manufacturers specify a minimum concrete thickness and cure time before installation. Many older Iowa garages have thinner slabs than modern lift specs call for, especially in detached outbuildings built decades ago for a lawn tractor and a workbench, not a hydraulic lift.

Before you finalize where the columns go, check your slab thickness at that exact spot, not just somewhere in the garage. Cracks, expansion joints, and previous patch jobs all affect anchor holding strength, and shifting the layout a foot or two can sometimes put you on solid, uncracked concrete instead of a weak spot. Utilities: Power, Air, and Lighting

Most lifts need a dedicated circuit for the power unit, and if that motor ends up on the wrong side of the bay, you’re looking at conduit runs across the floor or ceiling that could have been avoided with better planning. Air tools and impact wrenches also need a compressor line reachable from wherever you’re standing while the vehicle is raised.

Lighting matters more than people think too. Once a vehicle is in the air, you’re often working underneath it in exactly the spot where overhead light gets blocked by the vehicle itself. Plan for supplemental lighting, whether that’s additional fixtures positioned to shine under a raised vehicle or a good drop light setup, as part of the same layout decision that determines where the columns sit.

Sketch It, Then Get a Second Set of Eyes

The best way to finalize a garage layout for a two post lift is to draw it to scale, even roughly, before ordering anything. Measure your bay’s width, depth, and ceiling height, mark the garage door track and any obstructions, and sketch where the columns would sit along with the vehicle outline and door swing. This catches most conflicts before they become an expensive surprise on install day.
