We’ve shown up to plenty of driveways and pole barns where the owner already picked out their dream 2-post or 4-post lift, only to find the slab underneath won’t safely hold it. Why a Garage Slab Lift Check Comes Before Anything Else

Every lift manufacturer publishes a minimum slab thickness and cure requirement, and every one of those numbers assumes clean, uncracked, properly cured concrete. A garage slab lift check tells us whether your actual floor matches that assumption. We’ve measured plenty of Iowa garage floors that look solid to the eye but come in thinner than spec once we get a probe or core sample, especially in older homes built before lifts were common in residential garages.

This isn’t about selling you a bigger job than you need. Most Iowa slabs poured to modern residential code handle a home 2-post or 4-post lift just fine. But we’ve also seen additions, detached garages, and pole barns poured with thinner or lower-strength mix than a main house foundation, sometimes without rebar at all. A garage slab lift check catches that difference before it becomes an anchor pulling out of the concrete with a truck on the lift. We’d rather spend twenty minutes with a hammer drill and a tape measure now than get a call later about a lift that’s rocking.

Minimum Thickness We’re Measuring For

Most home lifts on the market — the BendPak and Atlas lines we install most often in Iowa garages — call for a minimum of 4 inches of concrete, with several 2-post models wanting closer to 4.5 inches under the anchor points. A garage slab lift check starts with drilling a small test hole at each anchor location to get an actual depth reading, not a guess based on when the house was built.

We also check for a mono-pour slab versus a floating slab poured separately from the footings. A floating slab that’s the right thickness can still work, but it changes how we anchor and sometimes changes which lift model we recommend. If your garage was extended at some point, or you’re not sure whether the floor is one continuous pour, that’s exactly the kind of thing a proper garage slab lift check is designed to catch before the lift shows up on a truck.

Cracks, Spalling, and Old Repairs

Cosmetic cracks are common in older Iowa slabs and usually aren’t a dealbreaker on their own. What matters during a garage slab lift check is whether a crack runs through or near an anchor bolt pattern, because that changes the concrete’s ability to hold load in that specific spot. We look at crack width, whether it’s actively moving, and whether it connects to a control joint or runs independently through the slab.

Spalling — that flaking, pitted surface damage you sometimes see near garage doors from years of road salt and moisture — is another thing we flag. It doesn’t always mean the slab is unsound, but it often means the top layer of concrete is weaker than it should be right where anchors need to bite. Old patch jobs get special attention too, since a patched section rarely bonds as strong as the original pour. Any of these findings can shift where we position the lift a few inches to land anchors in cleaner concrete.

Rebar, Wire Mesh, and What’s Actually Underneath

You can’t see reinforcement from the surface, which is why a garage slab lift check sometimes includes a quick scan before drilling, especially on slabs poured before wire mesh and rebar placement were standardized. Anchors that hit rebar drill differently than anchors that hit clean concrete, and knowing what’s under the surface helps us avoid weakening the reinforcement or hitting it at an angle that cracks the surrounding slab.

On garages where we can’t confirm reinforcement details from any paperwork, we treat the drilling process a little more conservatively and check each hole as we go rather than assuming a pattern across the whole floor. This matters more on older farmhouses and acreages around central Iowa, where slabs were sometimes poured by hand with whatever reinforcement was on hand at the time, versus a newer subdivision garage built to current code.

Cure Time on New Construction

If you’re building new or pouring a new slab specifically for a lift, cure time is part of the garage slab lift check whether the concrete looks ready or not. Concrete hits usable strength well before it hits full design strength, and manufacturers generally want at least 28 days of cure before anchoring a home lift, longer in cooler or humid conditions common during Iowa spring and fall pours.

Anchor Bolt Pattern and Load Spacing

Every lift has a specific anchor bolt pattern, and part of a garage slab lift check is confirming that pattern will land on solid, consistent concrete rather than straddling a joint or a repaired section. We map out where each bolt hole falls before drilling anything, and if the factory pattern lands somewhere problematic, we look at whether the lift can be shifted a few inches without affecting clearance to walls, doors, or ceiling height.

This step matters more in tighter home garages where there isn’t much wiggle room to begin with. We’ve adjusted lift placement by six or eight inches more than once specifically because the original spot would have put an anchor bolt right on a saw-cut control joint. It’s a small adjustment that avoids a real weak point.

What Happens If the Slab Doesn’t Pass

Not every garage slab lift check ends with a green light, and that’s fine — it’s better to know now. Options usually include pouring a reinforced concrete pad in the planned lift footprint, thickening a section of the existing slab, or in some cases choosing a lift style with a different footprint or lower point-loading that works with what’s already there. We walk through each option with actual cost and timeline tradeoffs rather than just telling you no.
