Garage Two Post Lift in Davenport: A First-Year Story From Install to First Service

The Davenport RV and trailer service shop that added its first garage two post lift in early 2025 didn’t do it to work on RVs. Class B and larger units still go on a mobile column setup out back. The lift went in for tire and wheel work on the daily-driver trucks and support vehicles that flow through the shop every week — hitches, brake controllers, wiring, and the constant rhythm of tire rotations for regional trailer haulers. This is the story of that lift’s first year, from install week through the six-month checkup, first-year cost of ownership, and what we told the owner about a twenty-year TCO horizon.

Why an RV and trailer shop bought a two-post

RV service shops don’t usually reach for a garage two post lift as their first equipment buy. The obvious tool is a set of mobile columns or a heavy in-ground lift for full-size Class A units. But the shop’s owner told us — accurately, in our experience — that most of the labor hours in an RV shop are actually on smaller vehicles: customer daily drivers dropping off for tire rotation while their RV is in the back, tow-vehicle brake work, small utility trailers, and the shop’s own service fleet.

For that ninety-percent of the workload, a garage two post lift is the right tool. Fast up, fast down, easy access to wheels and undercarriage, and small footprint. We speced a Challenger E10 asymmetric 10,000-pound overhead lift because the shop’s ceiling was 12 feet 6 inches — comfortable clearance for overhead — and because the Challenger’s arm geometry gave great access to the front wheels for tire rotation. Delivery was ten days from order. Install was a single day. The lift went to work the next morning.

Install week in Davenport

Install ran the Tuesday of the second week. Our crew loaded the truck in Ames on Monday afternoon, drove to Davenport that evening, and started at the shop at 7 a.m. Tuesday. The shop’s slab was five inches of 4,000 PSI concrete — commercial-grade, poured in 2015 when the current owner bought the building. Anchor drilling took under an hour. Columns up and plumbed by 10 a.m. Overhead crossbar and hydraulic hose routed by 11:30. Lunch, then bleed the system and cycle-test.

By 2 p.m. we had the lift certified and were walking the two techs through daily operation, arm restraint checks, and cam engagement. We also installed drive-over ramps at the entry side because the shop’s floor drain sat right in the natural approach path, and we didn’t want techs backing into an awkward angle every time they staged a vehicle. Total install time: six and a half hours. Total downtime for the shop: half a Tuesday. This is the pattern we run in the Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids for a straightforward commercial garage two post lift install with proper site prep done in advance.

First month — tire rotation and wheel work

The first month was mostly tire rotation. The shop’s regional trailer customers rotate on aggressive schedules — every 5,000 miles for the trucks in constant service, seasonally for the seasonal haulers. The garage two post lift cut rotation time from roughly 35 minutes on the previous single-post lift (which was ancient and slow) to about 18 minutes. Multiplied over the first month of about 80 rotations, that’s roughly 22 hours of tech time recovered in the first four weeks.

The techs also picked up wheel bearing work they had previously farmed out to a shop down the street. Wheel bearings on light-duty vehicles are a good fit for a two-post — the vehicle needs to be raised and stable, the wheels need to be off, and the tech needs unrestricted access to both hubs. In the first month the shop billed nine bearing jobs they wouldn’t have taken before. At an average of $340 per side including parts, that’s about $3,000 in first-month revenue that wouldn’t have existed. First month, the lift had already paid down a meaningful chunk of its purchase cost just on work they couldn’t previously do in-house.

Six-month checkup findings

We came back at the six-month mark for a full inspection. On any commercial garage two post lift, we recommend a six-month first inspection followed by annual inspections thereafter. The first inspection catches anchor settling, cable stretch, and any install issues that only reveal themselves under real-world load cycles. On the Davenport lift, we found exactly what we expected — nothing dramatic, but a few normal-service items.

Anchor torque: two anchors on the driver’s column had lost about 10 foot-pounds. Re-torqued to spec, no further action needed. Cable tension: equalizer cables had stretched roughly a quarter inch, well within tolerance but on the edge of where we’d want to see them at twelve months. We tightened by half a turn on each equalizer. Hydraulic fluid: clean, no water intrusion, no metal contamination. Arm restraints: all four engaged positively with less than 1/8 inch of play. Cam function: verified by raising empty, engaging safeties, and attempting to lower — held rock solid. Total service visit: 90 minutes. This is what a healthy six-month checkup looks like on a properly installed lift.

Cost of ownership — year one numbers

Total first-year cost of ownership for the Davenport garage two post lift, tracked with the owner: purchase price plus install plus first-year service and consumables. Purchase and install landed in the mid teens — mid five figures — for a commercial 10K overhead with delivery and installation. First-year consumables: negligible. Hydraulic fluid didn’t need changing (annual change is fine for this duty cycle). Anchor bolts were still under warranty from install.

Six-month service call: about $400 for the drive-out and inspection. Total first-year cost: purchase plus install plus roughly $400 in service. On the revenue side, the owner estimated the lift enabled around $18,000 in incremental billable work — bearing jobs they couldn’t take before, faster rotations that let them fit more customers in the same day, and one instance of catching a critical brake line failure during a routine rotation that turned into a full brake job. Year-one ROI on the lift was strongly positive, and that’s before you get into the intangible: the shop’s techs stopped throwing their backs out on tire jobs. That alone changes retention math over a five-year window.

What twenty-year total cost of ownership actually looks like

We tell customers to expect a properly maintained commercial garage two post lift to run twenty years with major service events at roughly year five (hydraulic fluid change, seal replacement), year ten (cable replacement, restraint gear inspection), and year fifteen (full hydraulic system rebuild or replacement). Total twenty-year service cost typically runs 30 to 45 percent of original purchase price, spread across those service events.

Consumables over twenty years: hydraulic fluid every five years, filter every two, arm-pad rubber every five to seven, cables replaced once (usually at year ten to twelve). Realistic total: another 10 to 15 percent of purchase on top of the service events. Adding it up: purchase plus install (100%) plus 40% service plus 12% consumables equals about 152% of original purchase price for a twenty-year total cost. Compare that to buying a used lift and replacing it in twelve years, or buying a cheap lift and dealing with warranty and support issues, and the commercial-grade path pencils out clearly. The Davenport shop has that twenty-year math on the wall as part of its equipment budget.

Would we recommend the same lift again

Yes. The Challenger E10 asymmetric was the right call for that shop’s workload, ceiling height, and slab. If the owner asked us to speck the same lift again tomorrow, we’d do it identically. If we were speccing for a different shop with a slightly different mix — say, more heavy-duty pickup work — we’d consider a 12K instead. If the ceiling had been under 11 feet, we’d have gone baseplate instead of overhead. The garage two post lift market is deep enough that there’s almost always a right answer for a specific shop.

What we’d change about the process: nothing substantial. The site survey caught the floor drain issue and the ramp decision, the install went clean, the six-month came back healthy, and the owner is a year in with no complaints. This is the outcome we aim for on every commercial install in the Quad Cities and across our Iowa service area.
