Step One: Confirm Your Actual Heaviest Vehicle

Before anything else, we ask farm shop owners to write down the actual curb weight of the heaviest vehicle that will ever go on the lift — not the average vehicle, the heaviest one. Suspension and shock work often involves 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups, and if there’s any farm equipment or a grain truck that might occasionally need a lift assist, that number can climb well past what a standard consumer lift handles. This is where a heavy duty 2 post lift earns its name: capacities starting around 10,000 lbs and running up to 18,000 lbs or more for true commercial and ag-grade work.

We’ve seen farm shops buy a mid-range lift sized for their truck’s dry weight, only to load it down with a full toolbox, a topper, and a hitch-mounted accessory rack that pushes it thousands of pounds over spec. Round up, and round up more than you think you need to.

Step Two: Measure Ceiling Height at the Exact Install Spot

Farm shop buildings vary wildly in ceiling height, and pole barn trusses or lighting fixtures can cut into usable clearance in spots that don’t match the rest of the building. We ask customers to measure straight up from the exact floor location the lift columns will sit, not a rough average of the building. Suspension work in particular needs full rise height regularly, since shocks and struts are easiest to access with the vehicle at or near full extension.

If your building has 14 feet of clearance in the middle bay but only 11 feet near a support beam, that changes where the lift needs to go, and possibly which model fits. Overhead heavy duty two-post configurations need more clearance than baseplate versions, and for a shop doing constant suspension work, we usually recommend baseplate models anyway since they’re a little more stable for extended holds at height.

Step Three: Assess the Concrete Slab

This is the step people skip most often, and it’s the one that causes the most install-day surprises. A heavy duty 2 post lift anchors into the slab, and the anchor bolts need a minimum concrete thickness and cure time to hold under load — especially load that sits at height for extended periods during suspension work rather than a quick five-minute lift-and-lower. We recommend at least 4-4.5 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or lightly reinforced concrete for most heavy duty models, and thicker slabs for the higher end of the capacity range.

Farm shops built in phases sometimes have a newer slab poured against an older one, with a seam running right through where the lift columns would sit. That seam can be a dealbreaker for anchor placement. Bring a tape measure and check for control joints or slab seams in your planned install area before you order anything — it’s a five-minute check that prevents a costly relocation later.

Step Four: Plan Column Spacing Around Your Widest Vehicle

Suspension and shock work usually means the vehicle needs full door-swing and wheel access, so column spacing matters more here than for lifts used mainly for oil changes. We ask farm shop owners to measure the width of their widest vehicle including mirrors, and compare that against the lift’s specified drive-through clearance between columns. A grain truck or a dually with extended mirrors can be tighter than people expect inside a two-post lift’s column spread.

We also factor in swing space for the arms themselves when nothing’s on the lift, since farm shops often store tools, parts carts, or a second vehicle in the same bay. Step Five: Check Your Electrical Setup

We ask customers to confirm what’s actually at the planned lift location, not just what’s available somewhere in the building. Running new wire after the lift arrives adds delay and cost that’s easy to avoid with one phone call to an electrician ahead of time.

We also ask about backup power or generator setups, since some farm shops run partially off-grid during outages, and a lift left at height during a power interruption needs its mechanical locks engaged, not just hydraulic pressure holding it up. Step Six: Decide Between Symmetric and Asymmetric Arms

For suspension and shock replacement, arm configuration affects how easily you can access control arms, sway bar links, and shock towers without repositioning the vehicle repeatedly. Asymmetric arm heavy duty 2 post lift models offset the columns relative to the vehicle, opening up more door swing and better front-end access — useful when you’re pulling a strut assembly and need room to maneuver. Symmetric arm designs center the vehicle between the columns and are sometimes preferred for very heavy, evenly-loaded vehicles like grain trucks.

Step Seven: Schedule the Site Survey Before You Order
